Black Friday has become a much-anticipated event in the US, the UK and around the world, offering shoppers an opportunity to snag a bargain on a wide range of products.

But when is Black Friday, and what exactly is it?

Whether you’re on the hunt for Christmas prezzies or just fancy treating yourself to some new fitness kit, here’s everything you need to know about the global shopping extravaganza if you didn’t already, and how to bag the best deals.

Do your research before hitting that buy now button this Black Friday

What is Black Friday?

Originating in the US, Black Friday has evolved into something of a global phenomenon. Unofficially kicking off the holiday shopping season, the retail frenzy has become a pre-Christmas tradition, with most major brands and department stores slashing prices and offering promotions on goods to convince people to splurge with their last paycheck before the holiday season.

Now’s your chance to get huge savings on big-ticket items, like this Polygon Siskui T7 mountain bike:

Product shot of a full-suspension mountain bike

Polygon Siskui T7 Full-Suspension Mountain Bike – was £2,000, now £1,399 (save £601), gooutdoors.co.uk

Coined in Philadelphia some time in the ‘60s, the term Black Friday refers to how retailers moved from the red and ‘into the black’ – in other words, turned profitable, thanks to the sales and promotions on offer. The ‘80s and ‘90s saw the widespread adoption of the event as retail giants like Target and Walmart fuelled the shopping frenzy, offering huge, unmissable discounts on big-ticket items.

Before long, the scene shifted from crowded stores to the digital world – following the nature of the market – and that’ll be why Black Friday remains a highly anticipated day, with retailers across the board drawing hordes of eager shoppers to online marketplaces and department stores alike.

There are already plenty of bargains to be found, such as up to 70% off Myvitamins at Myprotein.com:

Vimto Multivitamin Gummies – were £16.99, now £10.99 (save 35%), myprotein.com

When is Black Friday?

Black Friday traditionally takes place every year on the day after Thanksgiving in the US. So it’s like the American version of the Boxing Day sales in the UK.

Black Friday normally falls on the fourth Friday in November, and since this is typically most people’s last pay cheque before the Christmas holidays, it’s become known as the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season.

This year, officially, Black Friday will take place on 29 November, but you can expect big deals from as early as 21 November.

There are already some great bargains to be had on high-end fitness kit too, with over £600 off brands such as Echelon:

Echelon Stride-6 Treadmill product shot

Echelon Stride-6 Auto-Folding Treadmill – was £1,599, now £972 (save £627), echelonfit.uk

How long do Black Friday deals last?

Black Friday deals typically start on the day after Thanksgiving, which is 29 November this year. While the length of these sales varies among retailers, the deals often extend beyond the Friday and continue on for a good week or so. Many stores, especially online retailers, launch early Black Friday promotions ahead of the main day and some continue to do so through the weekend that follows.

In recent years, the trend has shifted towards week-long or even month-long Black Friday events. It’s pretty standard these days to see Black Friday deals at the advent of November. Online retailers are also known to introduce flash sales or hourly deals. If there’s something in particular you are looking to buy in this year’s Black Friday sales, it’s worth checking your preferred store’s promotional calendars or signing up for its newsletter, as the duration can vary. That will help ensure you get enough time to grab a good bargain or two, but more on that below…

Check out this deal from Wahoo Fitness:

Wahoo Fitness KICKR Snap Indoor Bike Trainer – was £249.99, now £149.99 (save £100), ukwahoofitness.com

When is the best time to shop Black Friday deals?

The best time to shop Black Friday deals is typically on the day itself: the Friday after Thanksgiving. However, as mentioned earlier, many retailers initiate sales earlier in the week, and online deals may start even earlier.

Some of the most sought-after deals are available during doorbuster events, often in the early hours of Friday. Then there’s always Cyber Monday, the following Monday, which originally came about as the Black Friday of online shopping, but now seems to have been merged into the same Black Friday weekend. To maximise your savings and grab the best deals, try to be strategic, plan ahead and monitor pre-sales – doing so will help you capitalise on specific time-limited promotions.

Grab your dream bike this Black Friday with up to 30% off bikes at Ribble Cycles:

How to bag the best Black Friday deals

It might be easy to dismiss some of the sales you spot during Black Friday as underwhelming, with reduced sale prices not seeming all that cheaper than usual. This is common, as some retailers will overegg their RRP prices on price tags or stickers so that the reductions seem more appealing (a practice known as “price anchoring”).

However, if you’re well prepared, eagle-eyed and willing to put the effort into finding some bargains, it’s more than possible to save some decent dosh on the items on your list and make the most of this pre-Christmas shopping bonanza.

Here are seven top tips for grabbing the best Black Friday bargains:

1. Plan ahead

Start by making a list of the items you want to purchase. Whether it’s tech gadgets, clothing, home appliances or boring Christmas gifts like socks for your uncle Bob, knowing what you’re looking for will help you stay focused and avoid splurging unnecessarily on impulse buys.

2. Set a budget

Before you dive into the Black Friday sales, decide how much you’re willing to spend. Sticking to a budget will prevent overspending and eventual buyer’s remorse.

3. Do your research

Look up the products you plan to buy in advance. Read reviews, compare prices and familiarise yourself with the regular retail prices of the items you’re interested in. This way, you’ll recognise a genuine deal when you see one.

4. Follow your favourite retailers’ socials and newsletters

Many retailers send out exclusive deals and early access offers to their newsletter subscribers or social media followers. Sign up for your favourite stores’ newsletters and follow them on their social platforms. That way you’ll be the first to know about any Black Friday promotions they might be doing.

5. Use price comparison tools

Online price comparison tools and browser extensions can help you find the best prices across various retailers. They provide real-time price comparisons, helping you identify the most cost-effective option. Coupert is a particularly good one.

6. Get up early or stay up late

Black Friday sales often start at midnight or in the early hours of the morning. If you’re serious about scoring the best deals, set your alarm early. Make sure you have the right browser tabs open, ready to be one of the first to shop.

7. Consider Cyber Monday

If you don’t find what you’re looking for on Black Friday, don’t forget about Cyber Monday, which takes place the following Monday. Originally created to encourage consumers to take advantage of the online deals and discounts available after the Thanksgiving weekend, this is essentially just a continuation of the Black Friday sales but with a focus on online shopping. Still, it’s worth having a look to see if your top retailers have made any further markdowns.

How to avoid shopping scams on Black Friday https://mensfitness.co.uk/features/how-to-avoid-shopping-scams-on-black-friday/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 11:27:30 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=21040 Discover how to protect yourself from fraud, scams and cyber crime on Black Friday

The post How to avoid shopping scams on Black Friday appeared first on Men's Fitness.

]]>
Black Friday – the pre-Christmas retail frenzy that offers hefty discounts on tech, homeware, fitness gear and everything in between – can save you some serious cash. But the bad news is it can also be a playground for scammers looking to take advantage of eager online shoppers.

If you’re preparing for the biggest shopping day of the year on 29 November, you need to be aware of the potential scams and know how to protect yourself. If you don’t, you could end up with a nasty dent in your wallet. Or worse, become the victim of online payment fraud.

With the help of industry experts, we’ve compiled the most common Black Friday shopping scams and ways to avoid falling victim to them.

Common scams to look out for

No matter what you’re shopping for, don’t think you’re ever immune to the threat of cybercrooks.

Steven Dick, co-director at The Fitness Group, says scams in any industry – even the fitness sector – are an issue all year round but particularly so on Black Friday.

“Scammers are all too aware that it’s the time of year that people are likely to be looking to spend more than they otherwise would,” Dick says.

“The tactics which are used to deceive purchasers are very crafty and can catch anyone out.”

Here are the typical scams all shoppers should be aware of when buying anything online during this year’s Black Friday:

Phishing emails

Watch out for emails that claim to offer exclusive deals. While many retailers will promote their Black Friday bargains via email, cybercriminals can mimic popular sellers by creating a fake but very similar email address and then replicating the format and language style of genuine emails from the retailer.

“The fraudulent email will contain a link to a fake website where its sole purpose is to steal your information,” explains Stuart Deavall, digital marketing manager at NetGiant. “A simple way to tell if a website is secure is to check whether the site has a security certificate, which should be evident by a small padlock next to the URL.”

A screenshot showing a web security certificate
Look for the padlock to the left of a site’s URL to make sure it’s authentic and secure

Fake websites

Anne Cutler, cybersecurity evangelist at Keeper Security, warns that it’s common for cybercriminals to set up malicious fake “online stores” whose only purpose is to steal payment card data and other personal information.

“Stick with retailers that are well known or that you’ve done business with before,” she says. “If the website and deal feels too good to be true, it probably is.”

Bait-and-switch tactics

It’s worth having your wits about you, even when shopping on the high street. Some sellers may advertise a specific item at a low price, but when you visit the store, they claim it’s sold out and try to upsell a more expensive alternative.

“Stick to trusted retailers and always read reviews beforehand,” advises Dick.

Smishing

Another common scam that’s growing in popularity is ‘smishing’ – the act of using SMS text messages as a trap, whereby scammers will pose as a business, claiming that a parcel is being delivered to your address.

“This scam could be easier to fall for during Black Friday, when you may have made multiple orders on different sites, and are waiting for goods to be delivered,” says Deavall.

“The criminal may send a link for you to click through; if it’s unclear who the sender is, based on the URL, you shouldn’t open the link.”

To report a suspicious text to your mobile provider, the UK Government recommends forwarding any texts that don’t feel legit to 7726 for free. In the US you can report fraud on the Department of Justice website or via the Internet Crime Complaints Centre.

Malicious mobile apps

Fraudulent mobile apps are also very common during the Black Friday sales season, says Cutler. In the same way that fake websites look almost identical to their authentic counterparts, mobile apps will masquerade as the real deal with no intention of sending you the item you paid for.

“Designed to look like legitimate shopping apps, these platforms can contain malware, steal personal information and deceive users into making purchases that never arrive.”

A hand reaching through a laptop screen to steal a credit card
Using your home WiFi to make purchases can help prevent cyber criminals pinching your personal information

Customer support impersonation

Another prevalent scam used by online crooks involves fraudsters claiming to be customer support from large companies, especially popular retailers where you might have made a Black Friday order.

“Watch out for text messages claiming that you’ve made multiple expensive purchases that you need to verify,” warns Deavall.

“The aim of the scam is to lure you into responding that you haven’t authorised the transaction, which can then lead to you resetting your password.”

During this process, the imposters can gain access to your sensitive information and steal passwords and login details.

Tips for avoiding Black Friday scams

Now you’re aware of the common tactics scammers use to try and con you into taking your money, here are some of the best ways to be more vigilant when shopping online:

Read the small print

Scammers might promote irresistible deals such as cheap gym memberships, but they often come with hidden fees or long-term commitments. Read the fine print, and be wary once again of providing your personal details.

Avoid using public Wi-Fi

Although you may see a great Black Friday deal and want to make the most of the bargain there and then, it’s always a wise idea to wait until you can make the purchase using your private WiFi connection or mobile data.

“Any public network is open to abuse, meaning there is always the chance that a fraudster is monitoring your activity and can log your payment details,” says Deavall.

“The bottom line is that, even if you miss the deal, there will always be alternative offers to take advantage of, with some retailers waiting until Cyber Monday to make their best and final reductions.”

Look out for unsecured websites

Ensure the website you’re buying products from has a secure URL, for example, one which starts with ‘https://’, and avoid making purchases on unencrypted or suspicious sites. This will go a long way in helping you protect your personal and financial information.

Don’t give in to pressure

Be aware that scammers often create a sense of urgency by claiming deals are available for a limited time.

Dick recommends not to rush into purchases. “Take your time to research and make informed decisions,” he says.

Be sceptical

Lastly, Cutler recommends not being too trusting and be determined to not let the scammers win.

“Keep your eyes open, practise good cyber hygiene and employ a healthy dose of scepticism when seeking out the hot holiday deals this season.”

Eight Sleep Pod 4 review: a super smart sleep-tracking mattress cover https://mensfitness.co.uk/review/eight-sleep-pod-4/ Tue, 05 Nov 2024 08:00:00 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?post_type=review-post&p=32473 If you can't put a price on a good night's sleep, try the Eight Sleep Pod 4

The post Eight Sleep Pod 4 review: a super smart sleep-tracking mattress cover appeared first on Men's Fitness.

]]>
The Pod 4 smart mattress cover by Eight Sleep promises better sleep through personalised temperature control and smarter tracking – but is it worth the price?

We all know that recovery is important if we want to get the best from our workouts. And while foam rollers and massage guns can help prep you for your next session, there’s nothing better than a good night’s sleep. Sleep tech has become a booming industry and Eight Sleep is at the forefront of this. The innovative sleep tech brand, which was founded in New York a decade ago, quickly gained popularity for its cutting-edge mattress covers designed to track and optimise sleep through personalised temperature control.

The Pod 4 is the company’s latest offering and aims to improve overall sleep quality thanks to the use of some nifty AI tech that makes use of your sleep data to not only monitor but also actively enhance sleep quality in real time through personalised temperature adjustments.

Building on the success of its predecessor, the Pod 3, the Pod 4 sports a redesigned tubing system for improved comfort as well as promising a quieter operation and some new app features. But do these really help to improve your sleep? With such a hefty price tag, the Pod 4 needs to deliver on its promises to justify the investment. Over the past few months, I’ve been testing it to see if it really can improve my sleep the way it claims.

Men’s Fitness verdict

As long as you don’t lose sleep over the eye-watering cost, the Pod 4 delivers a smart sleep experience that few products can match.
Pros
 • Improved temperature control
 • Enhances the comfort of existing mattresses
 • Detailed sleep tracking insights
Cons
 • Expensive even before subscription is factored in
 • Set-up can be tricky

Why you can trust Men’s Fitness

At mensfitness.co.uk, every product is rigorously tested by our team of experts. Lee Bell, a tech and fitness reviewer, has spent months using the Eight Sleep Pod 4 and incorporating it into his nightly sleep routine. From comfort to sleep tracking, he assessed everything to determine whether this high-tech mattress cover lives up to its claims.

Eight Sleep Pod 4 features

The Eight Sleep Pod 4 sticks to a similar setup as the Pod 3, which Men’s Fitness reviewed last year. It consists of a smart mattress cover and a hub that controls the water-cooled temperature system. The cover fits over your existing mattress, while the hub sits next to or under your bed (if it will fit), pumping water through the tiny tubes built into the cover to either cool or warm the surface based on your preferences (or time of year).

One key improvement over the Pod 3 is the redesigned tubing system. On the Pod 3, some users reported being able to feel the tubing, especially stomach sleepers, which wasn’t ideal. The Pod 4 addresses this with a more refined design that makes the tubing practically undetectable under the mattress cover. If anything, the cover seems to improve the overall feel and comfort of the mattress underneath, adding a deeper softness that you sink into without losing all firmness altogether. This is a big win, in my opinion. The cover also feels soft and luxurious to the touch, which is pretty important for a product at this price point, I think.

Eight Sleep Pod 4 design

However, like the Pod 3, the hub is still a bit bulky. And while it’s quieter than before, you can still hear some operational noise, especially during the initial cooling or heating process. You do get used to this sound, though. After the first week or so, I stopped hearing it and has now become part of the ambient sound of my bedroom at nighttime.

Another (slight) niggle is the set-up process. While it’s slightly better than the Pod 3, the Pod 4 is a bit of a faff to install, and can take some time and effort. For example, you need to connect the hub to the cover via three covered tubes and fill the hub with distilled water. Plus you have to find somewhere for all the tubing and cables to go without it looking unsightly. Nevertheless, the Eight Sleep app guides you through the process, but syncing the system to your WiFi and getting everything calibrated can take some patience. At least you do only have to do it once.

It’s also worth noting that while the Pod 4 enhances overall comfort for most people, it does slightly alter the feel of your mattress. The tubing, though less noticeable than in the Pod 3, can still change the sensation of your bed, especially for side sleepers who may feel a slight firmness. If you’re sensitive to this, it’s something to think about. However, if temperature control is your priority, these small changes are easily outweighed by the benefits.

Eight Sleep Pod 4 performance

The performance of the Eight Sleep Pod 4 is where this innovative device truly shines. Much like the Pod 3, the dual-zone temperature control is easily one of its most impressive features. Whether you and your partner have different temperature preferences or you want to use the Pod 4’s Autopilot feature to adjust temperatures throughout the night automatically, the system adapts to your needs with a snap of the fingers.

I should also note that the temperature control is noticeably more efficient in the Pod 4 than it was in the Pod 3. The redesigned tubing system doubles the cooling power, which hot sleepers will definitely appreciate. I found the Pod 4 quickly brought the bed to my ideal temperature in about 10-15 minutes. And for those nights where I wanted to sleep cooler, the system was able to maintain a comfortable coolness throughout the night, without the fluctuations I noticed in the Pod 3.

Ease of control

Another new standout feature is the tap control, which allows you to adjust the temperature without having to open the app on your phone. Two taps will cool the bed and three taps will warm it. It’s a super simple but intuitive addition – one that I didn’t think I needed until it was there. It’s especially useful in the middle of the night when you don’t want the bright screen of your phone waking you up.

Like its predecessor, the Pod 4 is also a powerful sleep tracker that monitors biometrics including heart rate, respiratory rate and time spent in different sleep stages (light, deep and REM). The app then provides a Sleep Fitness Score based on these metrics. Over time it will learn your preferences, adjusting the temperature automatically to maximise your sleep quality. It’s an amazing feature that I found worked amazingly over the two-or-so months that I’ve used it.

The Pod 4 also includes a snoring detection feature, which adjusts the temperature if it senses snoring. This is so useful for those who share a bed, ensuring one person’s snoring doesn’t affect the other’s sleep score (an issue reported with the Pod 3). The system even works alongside an adjustable base (if using the Ultra edition of the Pod 4), changing your sleep position to reduce the snoring even more. Although this comes at an additional cost, naturally.

Pros and cons

The Eight Sleep Pod 4 takes all the strengths of the Pod 3 and takes it to a whole new level, adding worthwhile innovations such as more powerful cooling power and quieter operation as well as genuinely useful tools like tap controls. It’s clear that Eight Sleep has listened to user feedback and refined the experience.

The Autopilot feature also works brilliantly, automatically adjusting temperature throughout the night to ensure you have the best night’s sleep possible, and then giving you an overview of how exactly it did this with a deep insight report the following morning. In fact, everything about this device is impressive. Well, except for the cost – both initially and ongoing.

The Pod 4’s high price tag and app subscription fee are likely to be massive turn-offs for the majority of people, even those who suffer from bad sleep. While it could prove a significant and worthwhile investment for those serious about improving their sleep, the Pod 4’s £2.7k initial cost and £150-plus ongoing annual running fees will prove a hard pill to swallow.

Still, if the costs aren’t enough to put you off, the Eight Sleep Pod 4 will not disappoint. This high-tech sleep system is hard to beat.

How does it compare?

When comparing the Pod 4 to its predecessor, the Pod 3, the first thing you notice is the improvement in the cover’s tubing design. Its improved cooling efficiency also make the upgrade worth considering, especially for hot sleepers. While the Pod 3 introduced game-changing sleep tech with temperature control and sleep tracking, the Pod 4 runs with these innovative features, delivering a quieter and more comfortable sleep than the Pod 3 ever could.

Compared to other competitors such as the SleepMe ChiliPad, the Eight Sleep Pod 4 offers more advanced tracking features. However, with its higher price, it’s way more expensive than other temperature-control mattress systems currently on the market.

How could the Eight Sleep Pod 4 be better?

While the Pod 4 is an improvement over its predecessor, there are still some areas where it could be refined. The bulky hub is one of them. The unit is still rather large and cumbersome, and finding a place in the bedroom where it can sit unobtrusively is near impossible. Also, reducing reliance on the app’s subscription model would make the Pod 4 more accessible, especially after paying a such a premium price. Simplifying the setup process would also be a welcome change, too, as the initial installation can feel like quite the job.

Should you buy the Eight Sleep Pod 4?

If you’re looking for the most advanced sleep tech on the market and are willing to make a significant investment to get your hands on it, the Eight Sleep Pod 4 is the best out there right now. The combination of precise temperature control, which learns your preferences to improve your sleep, alongside detailed sleep tracking insights and smart features like snore detection and tap controls sets it apart from anything else on the market.

If you’re on a budget, it’s hard to justify the Eight Sleep Pod 4. Especially considering the monthly subscription fees (of £14 per month) for the more detailed sleep insights on top of the already-very-expensive initial purchase costs. For those upgrading from the Pod 3, the improvements are great, but probably not differentiating enough to warrant the upgrade.

And those who are prepared to fork out whatever it costs to get the best sleep ever? The Pod 4 is hard to beat.

Bowflex SelectTech 552i: they’re not pretty but I find them so useful https://mensfitness.co.uk/review/bowflex-selecttech-552i/ Mon, 04 Nov 2024 08:00:00 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?post_type=review-post&p=32458 These adjustable dumbbells are great value with a wide weight range

The post Bowflex SelectTech 552i: they’re not pretty but I find them so useful appeared first on Men's Fitness.

]]>
Bowflex’s versatile SelectTech 552i dumbbells promise good bang for your buck, but their bulky size might prove irksome for some exercises.

Finding space-saving fitness equipment for your home gym can feel like a workout in itself. With space at a premium, it’s becoming increasingly tricky to make room for bulky fitness gear. That’ll be why adjustable dumbbells have quickly become the go-to piece of kit for those looking to upgrade their at-home routines without cluttering up their living room or garage gym.

The Bowflex SelectTech 552i is probably one of the most recognised adjustable dumbbells on the market. Whether it’s the relatively low price point, great reviews or a mixture of both, these dumbbells are known for their wide weight range and easy of use while promising to replace an entire weight rack with just two dumbbells.

But do they live up to the hype? Over the past few months, I’ve been putting these adjustable dumbbells through their paces to see if they really deliver on their promise.

Men’s Fitness verdict

With a robust build, wide weight range and quick-change dial system, the Bowflex SelectTech552i is hard to beat. However, its bulky design can be a bit off-putting.
Pros
 • Practical and space-saving for home gyms
 • Wide weight range
 • Simple to operate
Cons
 • Weight selection dials need changing at both sides
 • Lacks aesthetic polish
 • Bulky, even at low weights

Why you can trust Men’s Fitness

Every product you read about on mensfitness.co.uk has been rigorously tested by our experts – whether freelance reviewers or the core MF team. Over the past few months, consumer tech expert Lee Bell put the Bowflex SelectTech 552i adjustable dumbbell to the test, incorporating the dumbbells into his fitness routine to find out if they live up to their claims. He assessed its performance, features and design to find out whether these dumbbells are worth the investment.

Bowflex SelectTech 552i design and build

It might sound harsh, but it feels like Bowflex focused more on function than form when designing the SelectTech 552i dumbbells. And style has suffered as a result. Looking rather garish and cumbersome, they’re not exactly easy on the eye. Sure, you can’t expect too much from a pair of dumbbells, but when compared to the likes of the super sleek JaxJox DumbbellConnect, it’s clear more could have been done in the design stakes.

The black plastic casing around the plates feels somewhat bulky and even a little cheap, compared to more premium-looking metal alternatives. That said, the dumbbells feel solid during use, with no noticeable rattling or shifting of the plates during lifts, which is what really matters. Another big plus is the compact storage trays the dumbbells come with. These trays allow the dumbbells to slot into place when not in use, keeping your workout space tidy.

Each dumbbell replaces up to 15 individual weights, covering a range from 2kg to 24kg. This makes them perfect for home gymers who don’t want to clutter their space with multiple dumbbells of varying weights. However, even at lower weight settings, the dumbbells still carry their full bulk, which can feel awkward during some exercises, like curls or lateral raises, but more on that later.

Bowflex SelectTech 552i performance

When it comes to performance, the Bowflex SelectTech 552i is as versatile as they come. The weight range is ideal for everything from light accessory work to more demanding strength exercises. The small weight increments of 2.5kg works well, too, making it easy to progressively overload during workouts.

For most exercises, the dumbbells perform really well. The dial system allows for quick transitions between different weights, which is especially helpful for supersets and drop sets. It’s a huge advantage over traditional dumbbells, where switching weights can take valuable time out of your workout. What’s more, the weight plates feel securely attached during all exercises, from bench presses to deadlifts.

However, as mentioned earlier, the dumbbells’ bulky design did cause some issues. During moves like bicep curls and triceps extensions, I found that the wide plate design would occasionally bump into my body, interrupting the flow of the movement. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning to use these for more dynamic exercises.

Weight selection

Another minor gripe is the weight selection mechanism itself. While it’s generally smooth and easy to use, having to adjust both ends of the dumbbell adds a few extra seconds to the process. For high-intensity workouts where timing is key, this can slow you down slightly.

Despite these minor drawbacks, the SelectTech 552i is an excellent pair of dumbbells. Whether you’re a beginner looking to build strength or a more experienced lifter, the weight range and ease of use make them a great addition to any home gym setup.

If you’re after a versatile and space-saving solution for your home gym, the Bowflex SelectTech 552i adjustable dumbbells are a solid investment. The wide weight range and quick-change dial system make them a solid contender for all kinds of workouts – from strength training to more intensive routines like supersets. While the bulky design and dual-dial mechanism might be slightly cumbersome for some exercises, these dumbbells deliver on performance where it counts.

How do they compare?

When pitted against competitors like the JAXJOX DumbbellConnect or the MuscleSquad Quick Select Adjustable Dumbbells, the Bowflex SelectTech 552i dumbbells definitely hold their own. The smaller weight increments are a major advantage, allowing for more precise progressions in strength. However, in terms of aesthetics, competitors like JAXJOX offer a sleeker, more modern look. That said, Bowflex wins in terms of price-to-performance ratio and durability.

Reducing the bulk of the dumbbells, especially at lower weight settings, would definitely make them easier to handle in my opinion – especially when it comes to more dynamic exercises. It might also help if the weight selection process was simplified somewhat – perhaps by allowing weight changes from one dial instead of two – as this would just speed things up a touch.

Should you buy the Bowflex SelectTech 552i?

If you want to elevate your home gym game with a reliable, space-saving dumbbell set, the Bowflex SelectTech 552i is a worthy contender. Despite a few design quirks, their ease of use and performance makes them a solid choice for anyone looking to get serious about their home workouts.

Fitness and health tracking have come a long way in recent years. What used to be the domain of bulky pedometers or basic fitness bands has evolved into a market brimming with stylish smartwatches that promise to do way more than just track your steps. Today’s fitness wearables boast accurate heart rate monitoring on top of features like sleep analysis, recovery insights and even mental wellness tracking – all crammed into a sleek design that works well with workout gear, office wear or more casual attire.

Take HUAWEI’s latest smartwatch, the WATCH GT 5 Series. This wearable aims to balance fitness functionality with a design that is a class apart from standard smartwatches, making you look and feel like you’re wearing a luxury timepiece. Whether you’re a serious athlete, a casual gym-goer, or someone who’s into wellness and looking for a device that tracks more than just the basics, this watch should have something for you.

HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 design: stylish and built to last

HUAWEI has clearly put effort into making the WATCH GT 5 Series as much a fashion statement as it is a fitness and health device. The GT 5 Pro has been built with high-end materials like aerospace-grade titanium alloy and ceramic, which not only gives it that premium edge but makes sure it’s durable enough to handle whatever’s thrown at it.

What’s more, all the GT 5 models sport an EasyFit 3.0 design, which allows for easy strap swapping. This is ideal for those who want their watch to transition from gym workouts to the office without much messing around.

Fitness tracking: advanced yet accessible

This smartwatch is certainly not all about looks. When it comes to tracking fitness, the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Series is just as impressive. Powered by the supremely accurate HUAWEI TruSense System, it covers all the basics – heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, and stress levels – while making all of that data more accurate than ever (and it was already VERY accurate). GPS accuracy has also surged ahead, with Huawei improving its Sunflower Positioning system even in challenging environments like cities, great for runners and cyclists who need reliable data on their outdoor sessions.

Runners will also be pleased to hear about the WATCH GT 5 Series’ Running Form Analysis feature, which gives feedback on things like ground contact time and vertical oscillation. This kind of data can help improve performance and reduce injury risk.

Gain valuable running insights with the GT 5 Series’ Running Form Analysis feature

If running isn’t your jam, not to worry. This watch has support for over 100 other sports modes, from yoga to cycling. Whatever you’re into, it has something for just about every type of fitness enthusiast – especially golfers.

Loaded with over 15,000 golf courses from around the world, the WATCH GT 5 Series gives you real-time data on distances, course layout, and hazards, making sure you’re always on top of your game. It’s like having a personal caddy right on your wrist.

However, it’s worth noting that these golf features, as well as free diving and certain trail running features, are only available on the Pro versions, so depending on what you’re looking for the standard model may suffice.

For those who prioritise heart health, the Pro models also come equipped with ECG monitoring. This means you can check your heart’s electrical activity directly from your wrist, which is useful for anyone looking to keep an eye on their cardiovascular health. It’s an increasingly common feature in premium smartwatches, but a welcome option nonetheless.

HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 battery life: lasting power

One of the most appealing aspects of the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Series is its impressive battery life. With up to two weeks of power on the 46mm Pro model, and up to seven days on the smaller 42mm Pro, the watch is bound to outperform many of its competitors. Even with regular GPS tracking and fitness features running, it claims to hold its own – so you won’t be tethered to a charger every other day.

The long battery life, combined with its compatibility across EMUI, Android and iOS, makes the GT 5 Series a versatile smartwatch option that should slide seamlessly into your daily life, whatever your passion.

MuscleSquad Quick Select Adjustable Dumbbell review: I’m a fan of its wide weight range https://mensfitness.co.uk/review/muscle-squad-quick-select-adjustable-dumbbell/ Wed, 31 Jul 2024 11:28:43 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?post_type=review-post&p=31289 This budget adjustable dumbbell is well worth its weight

The post MuscleSquad Quick Select Adjustable Dumbbell review: I’m a fan of its wide weight range appeared first on Men's Fitness.

]]>
The MuscleSquad Quick Select is a solid, budget-friendly alternative to premium adjustable dumbbells with a useful 5kg to 32.5kg weight range.

As the home fitness market continues to boom, adjustable dumbbells have remained a hot commodity for those looking to stay in shape without stepping into a gym. And it’s easy to see why. These versatile, space-saving weights are ideal for those who love home workouts but don’t really have the space for a full rack of dumbbells. They let you switch up the weight quickly and easily, so you can move smoothly from one exercise to the next. Plus, they’re a great way to keep costs down while still getting a serious workout.

Men’s Fitness verdict

Its wide weights range means the MuscleSquad can be used for all kinds of workouts, and while it may not have the polished finish of higher-end models, its performance is impressive given its price.
Pros
 • Great value
 • Selection dial is easy to use
 • Large weight range
 • Sturdy construction
Cons
 • Weight plates can rattle
 • Bulky design makes some exercises feel awkward

Why you can trust Men’s Fitness

At Men’s Fitness we pride ourselves on delivering information that serves a singular purpose: to improve some aspect of your health, fitness or wellbeing. For over 16 years, we’ve been publishing authoritative health and fitness content – written by our expert editors and contributors. We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

Also available in 2.5-12kg, 2.5-25kg and 5-40kg options, the MuscleSquad Quick Select Adjustable Dumbbell I tested stands out not only for its wide weight range of 5-32.5kg, but also for the fact it’s a fraction of the cost of premium brands like the Primal Strength Personal Series. Over the past few months, I’ve been testing this adjustable dumbbell to find out if it’s just as good as those pricier options.

MuscleSquad Quick Select design and build

They say that first impressions count, and the MuscleSquad Quick Select Adjustable Dumbbell makes a good one. I found that it’s built tough, feels sturdy during use and the core, which is designed to handle the heavy weights, stays stable even at the max setting of 32.5kg. The weight plates attach securely, though I found they do rattle a bit. But once you get past that, you’ll find the mechanism reliable and it feels like it’s built to last. I don’t doubt that this dumbbell should hold up well over time, as long as you store it properly and keep it dry.

One of the best features has to be the dumbbell’s dial mechanism at each end of the dumbbell. This makes changing the weight a breeze: just press the red safety button, turn the dial to your desired weight and lift the dumbbell off its cradle. The dial clicks into place nicely, giving you peace of mind that the weight is set correctly. This easy adjustment is a big plus, making it super simple to switch between exercises without wasting time.

Despite its solid build, the dumbbell is surprisingly compact and doesn’t take up much space. So it’s great if your home gym is a bit tight on space. The design is pretty standard for a weight like this and mostly focused on function over form. (It’s a black and quite cumbersome-looking design – there’s nothing too sleek about it. However, for the price, it’s a fair trade-off compared to pricier adjustable dumbbells on the market.

MuscleSquad Quick Select performance

When it comes to performance, the MuscleSquad Quick Select Adjustable Dumbbell delivers a pretty solid experience, though it’s got a few quirks worth noting. Adjustable dumbbells always feel a bit different from traditional fixed weights due to their design, and MuscleSquad’s offering is no different. As I mentioned earlier, the weight plates can shift slightly during use, causing a bit of a rattle that might be off-putting at first. However, the plates are held securely by the dumbbell’s mechanism. And after a few sessions the rattling does become less distracting. It’s just a matter of getting used to it.

One big plus for the MuscleSquad Quick Select is its versatility. With a weight range from 5kg to 32.5kg, adjustable in 2.5kg steps, I found it to be super useful for a wide variety of exercises. For example, this range is ideal for progressive overload, which is key for building strength. Whether you’re doing bicep curls, bench presses or rows, being able to quickly change the weight means you can keep your workout intensity up without any interruptions.

MuscleSquad Quick Select drawbacks

That said, the dumbbell’s design has a couple of downsides, albeit minor ones. Some exercises, especially ones needing a stable grip or precise balance like goblet squats or triceps extensions, can feel a bit awkward due to the dumbbell’s size and shape. When the dumbbell is fully loaded, it can be a bit tricky to hold comfortably. Also, that slight shifting of the plates can feel off-putting during exercises that involve rapid or overhead movements, like shoulder presses.

Despite these drawbacks, MuscleSquad’s adjustable dumbbell is excellent for compound lifts and traditional strength training exercises. For moves like bench presses, deadlifts and bent-over rows I found it sturdy and reliable.

xxxxxxx

Verdict

If you’re in the market for an affordable and reliable adjustable dumbbell, the MuscleSquad Quick Select is a solid option. Its wide weight range means it can be used for all kinds of workouts, from light curls to heavy presses. And while it may not have the polished finish of higher-end models, its performance is impressive, given its price.

Plus, it’s easy to adjust and takes up minimal space, making it ideal for smaller home gyms – or those without a home gym at all. Sure, there are a few minor issues, like the rattling plates and bulky design, but these don’t overshadow the overall value. For a cost of less than £350 for a pair, it really does offer excellent value for money – it’s hard to find a better option at this price point.

How does the MuscleSquad Quick Select compare?

When pitted against leading market rivals like the Bowflex SelectTech adjustable dumbbells, the MuscleSquad holds its ground pretty well. Bowflex’s offering might boast a sleeker design and slightly smoother operation, but the MuscleSquad dumbbell’s performance is not far off, especially considering its lower price point. It also comes in at the same price (at the time of writing) as JaxJox’s DumbbellConnect adjustable dumbbells, but this is really a toss-up between something sleeker and more high-tech (but arguably less efficient) with JaxJox, or a more conventional and – in my opinion – easier to set up and use with MuscleSquad.

While MuscleSquad’s Quick Select is a solid pick for an adjustable dumbbell, there’s definitely room for some tweaks. First off, fixing the rattling weight plates would help make you more confident during use. Making the design a little more slender would also make a difference, especially for exercises where a larger weight size feels a bit awkward.

If you prefer to do your workouts at home but don’t have the space for a full-on dumbbell rack, the Quick Select Adjustable Dumbbell will be right up your street, especially if you’re in the market for a top-quality, budget-friendly option. Just be prepared to invest in two of them if you really want to maximise your workouts.

How we test the best adjustable dumbbells

Every product you read about on mensfitness.co.uk has been rigorously tested by our experts – whether freelance reviewers or the core MF team. Over a few months, consumer tech expert Lee Bell put the MuscleSquad Quick Select to the test, incorporating the dumbbell into his fitness routine to find out if it lives up to the brand’s claims. He assessed its performance, features and design, testing it throughout its weight range and through a range of exercises at high rep ranges to see how it handles, assessing it in terms of grip, comfort and weight range. He then provided an overall score, taking build quality, performance and price into consideration.

JaxJox DumbbellConnect review: nothing dumb about these smart bells https://mensfitness.co.uk/review/jaxjox-dumbbellconnect-review/ Thu, 25 Jul 2024 10:19:11 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=12674 With a digital docking station and performance tracking app, these JaxJox adjustable dumbbells are an impressive bit of kit

The post JaxJox DumbbellConnect review: nothing dumb about these smart bells appeared first on Men's Fitness.

The JaxJox DumbbellConnect is a quality adjustable dumbbell with a sleek design, app connectivity and smart features. But is this a classic case of tech for the sake of it?

Looking to add some of the best adjustable dumbbells to your home gym? Here’s how the smart and sleek JaxJox DumbbellConnect performed on test.

Men’s Fitness verdict

Is there a need for smart dumbbells? We’re still not sure. Though they’re undoubtedly well made and the smart features are useful, it’s not quite the seamless interface we’d hoped for.
Pros
 • Quick and easy to change weight
 • Smart features with app connectivity
 • Good build quality
 • Space-saving design
Cons
 • Dumbbells have to be charged before use
 • Dock’s screen can be difficult to see clearly
 • Switching between weight sizes feels clunky
 • Charging can be fiddly

Why you can trust Men’s Fitness

At Men’s Fitness we pride ourselves on delivering information that serves a singular purpose: to improve some aspect of your health, fitness or wellbeing. For over 16 years, we’ve been publishing authoritative health and fitness content – written by our expert editors and contributors. We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

If you’re a fan of tech-fuelled workouts, you’ll probably have JaxJox on your radar. The US fitness technology company has become known not just for its quirky name, but for its rise as a standout player in the fit-tech space following the launch of its smart kettlebell, the KettlebellConnect, a few years back.

The brand has been making impressive strides in the fitness world ever since. Take the release of the JaxJox DumbbellConnect – the company’s first dumbbell set – which offers something a little different to other adjustable dumbbells on the market: Bluetooth connectivity. Using Bluetooth, each dumbbell can be digitally adjusted via an app or at the tap of a button to offer 16 different weights, ranging from 8lb to 50lb (3.6kg to 22.7kg). A pair provides a total of 100lb (45.4kg), for some people enough to replace an entire weight rack.

But do this dumbbell’s high-tech additions really add value for fitness enthusiasts, or improve how it performs in practice?

JaxJox DumbbellConnect design and build

When it comes to design, the JaxJox DumbbellConnect is a pretty sleek and minimal dumbbell, sporting a clean, neutral grey color with a striking lime green accent along the bottom.

Unlike most other adjustable weights – which sometimes sport bulky or ugly designs – the DumbbellConnect looks like a classic gym dumbbell. It isn’t overly flashy and has a pro feel, with no garish branding, just a subtle JaxJox imprint on both sides. It’ll definitely look the part in any home gym. Users will also appreciate the almost-circular design of the dumbbell’s weight plates, which are levelled off at one end to stop it from rolling around during workouts when it’s not in the charging dock.

The build quality is top-notch, too. The weights feel solid and robust, with a well-designed grip pattern. The only minor issue, I found, is the plastic housing inside the dumbbell closest to the handle, which slightly cheapens the overall feel.

Size-wise, the DumbbellConnect set is pretty compact, measuring 30.7 x 9.6 x 21.2in / 78 x 24.5 x 54cm, so shouldn’t take up much more space than just one regular heavy dumbbell.

JaxJox DumbbellConnect performance and app

The JaxJox DumbbellConnect works just like any quality dumbbell. However, its built-in digital adjustment tech means its weight can be switched between sets without having to make that much effort. By pressing a button on either side of the display, you can adjust the weight in eight 6lb increments between 14lb, 20lb, 26lb, 32lb, 38lb, 44lb and 50lb (3.6kg, 6.4kg, 9.1kg, 11.8kg, 14.5kg, 17.2kg, 19.9kg and 22.7kg). A slightly irritating high-pitched beep signals successful docking and weight adjustment (and unfortunately you can’t switch the weight display to kg if you’re a metric kinda guy).

It takes about six seconds to switch between weights, which is probably about the same as using a regular adjustable dumbbell. But it feels longer on the DumbbellConnect, somehow – perhaps because you’re waiting around while it does its thing. Adjustments can be made via the physical buttons on the dock or the JaxJox app (the latter being more time-consuming, for obvious reasons). One smart feature here is that, if you have a pair, the dumbbells sync, so changing the weight on one will update both.

Selecting the required weight on the base is simple and intuitive

JaxJox dock

One issue I found is that the docks turning off during inactivity, requiring an extra 10 seconds to reconnect to Bluetooth. I found that to be quite annoying during fast-paced, HIIT-style workouts, where I would come back to the weights to adjust for my next set, and need to turn them on again. Another niggle is that the dumbbell needs careful handling when docking to ensure proper seating and alignment, which can be tricky mid-workout. I had an incident with a misaligned plate causing uneven weight distribution, disrupting the whole dock.

Additionally, if the base unit’s battery is low, the dumbbell might not switch weight size, and the screen may freeze. If this happens, you’ll need to charge it. A low-charge warning would be helpful here, but instead it just refuses to turn back on, leaving you to deduce that it’s the battery at fault.

App features

As well as allowing you to adjust the weight between sets, the app also includes a range of trainer-led video workouts. However, this feature requires a subscription costing $24.99 / £23.99 a month. It’s not cheap, especially after splurging on the dumbbell itself. However, the dumbbell works without an app subscription, so this fee is entirely optional.

One nifty feature in the app is FitnessIQ. JaxJox uses a proprietary machine-learning algorithm to calculate a score (your ‘FitnessIQ’) and motivates you through gamification by tracking your progress. It monitors your reps, sets and – if you have a JaxJox heart rate monitor – your heart rate, to calculate the calories you’ve burned. The app has a Peloton-like vibe, but with a focus on weight lifting, though it doesn’t feel quite as polished. It also doesn’t seem to count reps as accurately as I’d hoped. In my opinion, it’s probably worth skipping the app and just using the weights on their own to avoid frustration and save on costs. Though future updates could well make it a better experience.

How does it compare?

The JaxJox DumbbellConnect stands out with its sleek design and digital adjustment tech, offering something unique over manually adjustable dumbbells. However, its ability to switch weight via Bluetooth, while novel, isn’t all that convenient. The time it takes to move between weight sizes isn’t quite as swift as on some manual dumbbell sets, in my opinion. So, while some might appreciate the technological smarts of JaxJox’s DumbbellConnect, others might be deterred by its reliance on digital features and prefer the simplicity of a bog-standard manually adjustable dumbbell, such as those made by Bowflex or Musclesquad.

While the JaxJox DumbbellConnect impresses with its innovative features, there’s still some room for improvement. The short USB type-C charging cables and lack of a power-saving mode aren’t ideal. The need for careful handling during docking and the absence of a low battery warning don’t work so well for some workout types, especially HIIT. The app could also do with an update to ensure it works more seamlessly with the dumbbell.

Verdict

Overall, JaxJox’s DumbbellConnect is a quality set of adjustable weights. While the careful docking required for weight changes might annoy those who prefer fast-paced workouts, it’s well-made, smart, stylish and functions generally well for those who prefer a more steady workout flow.

At £179.99 (or $499 / £360 for a pair at the time of writing), JaxJox’s smart dumbbell does represent good value for money when compared to what else is on the market – and especially considering the £900 RRP for a pair at launch.

So as a high-quality, smart adjustable dumbbell offering a broad weight range, I believe the DumbbellConnect is worth the investment – and at the moment is almost better off without that clunky companion app.

Bose Ultra Open Earbuds review: the best open-ear sound I’ve experienced https://mensfitness.co.uk/review/bose-ultra-open-earbuds/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 13:41:09 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?post_type=review-post&p=31032 In-ear sound quality from open-ear buds? That's the promise of Bose's new Ultra Open Earbuds

The post Bose Ultra Open Earbuds review: the best open-ear sound I’ve experienced appeared first on Men's Fitness.

]]>
Bose claims its Ultra Open Earbuds offer exceptional sound quality in a versatile, open-ear design – but do they live up to its promises?

As someone who’s pretty active and always on the go, I’ve had difficulty finding the best running headphones. I want great sound, but there are also times when I want to be aware of my surroundings, especially when running or cycling outside – or even when navigating a busy street. While being fully immersed in my favourite music is great most of the time, it’s those aforementioned instances where noise-cancelling can be on the risky side.

Men’s Fitness verdict

These stylish open-ear buds ooze quality. I loved the sound quality and appreciated the situational awareness they offer. They can feel a bit unbalanced though – and there is that hefty price.
Pros
 • Best-sounding open-ear buds I’ve tested, delivering rich, immersive audio
 • Innovative design is comfortable and keeps you aware of your surroundings
 • Versatile enough for workouts, commuting and work
Cons
 • At just under £300, they don’t come cheap
 • They can feel slightly unstable, though won’t fall off
 • Battery life is decent, but lack of wireless charging is disappointing

How we test running earphones

Every product you read about on mensfitness.co.uk has been rigorously tested by our experts – whether freelance reviewers or the core MF team. Over more than a month, consumer tech expert Lee Bell put the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds to the test, incorporating the earphones into his everyday commute and fitness routine to see they lived up to their claims. He assessed their performance, features and design and weighed up their overall value before awarding the final score.

There have been many attempts by tech brands to make earphones that offer a good balance between audio quality and open-ear awareness, à la the Shokz OpenFit or Sony’s LinkBuds, but I’ve never found any that work all that convincingly.

Enter a new kind of earbud that promises to blend premium audio quality with an open-ear design: Bose’s Ultra Open Earbuds. These earphones are unique in that they hook around the middle of your ears, keeping you connected to the world while promising to deliver Bose’s renowned sound, all in one sleek package.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been putting these innovative earbuds through their paces, testing their performance during workouts, commutes and virtual meetings. Plenty of time to see if they live up to those promises.

Bose Ultra Open design and first impressions

Just from looking at them, it’s pretty obvious that the Ultra Open Earbuds aren’t your conventional set of in-ear headphones. They’re unique to Bose, too, unlike anything the company has made before.

So instead of just sitting inside your ear like your bog-standard earbuds, the Ultra Open Earbuds hook around your ear’s helix (the outer rim) with one end just resting gently inside the concha and the other – a sleek battery cylinder – sitting behind the ear.

This unique design can make the buds feel a bit odd when first wearing them, but they soon felt surprisingly comfortable. That’s probably due to them being lightweight (at just 6.4g per bud) and made from high-quality materials, combining soft silicone and sturdy plastic.

The flexible silicone comes in the form of a spring alongside a plastic speaker arm, which work together to keep the earbuds securely in place, even when you’re active. Although the uneven weight distribution from the battery can make them feel a bit wobbly at times, they stayed put during my runs and when cycling without falling out. Jump around with them in too much, however, and you might feel a bit like dumbo. Nevertheless, the fit is intuitive once you get the hang of it.

The earbuds’ tactile buttons on the battery cylinder are a neat touch, letting you adjust volume, skip tracks and switch modes without reaching for your phone. It’s simple and effective, perfect for those who prefer hassle-free controls.

Overall, these earbuds make a great first impression design-wise. They look cool (although I did feel a little self-conscious in them on the first few occasions since they’re so unusual), feel durable and fit comfortably once you get used to them.

Bose Ultra Open performance and features

Over the past month, I’ve used the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds in various settings, including during cycling, at work and on public transport. They performed generally very well across all those scenarios, but proved especially useful when on my bike, ensuring I could listen out for approaching cars while having great-quality audio playing in the background.

As for during runs, the buds stayed securely in place, and the open-ear design allowed me to remain aware of my surroundings without sacrificing sound quality. And that’s a game changer, if you ask me. They were really comfortable, too, making it easy to wear them for extended periods.

As for sound quality, these buds deliver a full, rich audio experience and one that I’ve not experienced with an open-ear design before. I’d even go as far as saying the sound rivals that of some brands’ in-ear models. This is mostly down to Bose’s Immersive Audio tech, which offers up a soundstage that feels expansive and detailed, with deep bass, clear mids and crisp highs. Whether you’re listening to your favourite tunes or a podcast, or watching a video, the sound is consistently top-notch. And it works well in that the sound is rich until something from your environment interrupts, which leads me onto my next point.

Tune into your environment

One of the standout features is how well these earbuds balance sound delivery and situational awareness. The open-ear design uses air-conduction technology to direct sound into your ear canal while keeping your ears open to ambient noise. So as the sound of a car comes into your environment, the audio of the earbuds will gradually lower to allow it in, without it feeling jarring. This makes these earbuds perfect for outdoor workouts or busy public places where you want to hear your favourites tunes but also need to stay alert.

When it comes to battery life, the Ultra Open Earbuds are decent with about 7.5 hours of playback on a single charge and an additional 19.5 hours from the charging case. This means you can use them all day without worrying about frequent re-juicing. The only minor drawback is the lack of wireless charging, but the USB-C port charges them quickly.

How do they compare?

Compared to other open-ear options on the market, the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds stand out with a comfort level I haven’t found anywhere else when it comes to open-ear designs. While competitors might offer a more secure fit, Bose’s audio performance is unmatched, serving a dose of rich, immersive sound that almost rivals in-ear models, whatever you’re listening to. However, there are definitely cheaper options out there and their $299 / £299 price tag could be a deciding factor for budget-conscious buyers.

While the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds are an all-round well-performing pair of earphones for those who want to be more aware of their surroundings, there’s still some room for improvement. For one, the uneven weight distribution can make them feel slightly unstable during vigorous activities, making your ears feel like they’re flapping. Adding wireless charging would have been a nice touch, too.

Should you buy the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds?

If you prioritise exceptional sound quality and need to stay aware of your surroundings, the Ultra Open Earbuds are definitely worth the investment. They’re not only comfortable, but performance is mostly excellent, making them ideal for most types of workouts as well as commutes and general everyday use. However, if you’re on a tight budget or care more about cancelling out your surroundings, you might want to consider other options.

Can this gadget help with injuries and pain relief? I put the Kineon MOVE+ Pro through its paces to find out.

Pain and injuries are an unavoidable part of life, and they’re even more common for fitness enthusiasts. Whether it’s the strain from intense training sessions or lingering aches from recurring injuries, recovery tools that work – like the best foam rollers – are a must-have, but not always easy to find.

That’s where the Kineon MOVE+ Pro comes in. This high-tech red light therapy device promises to deliver relief from joint pain and enhance muscle recovery through some pretty cutting-edge tech. The MOVE+ Pro works by using a combination of red light and infrared lasers to penetrate deep into tissues, promoting healing and reducing inflammation. It’s been designed to be lightweight, portable and easy to use, and is aimed at those who need something they can use every day either at home or on the go.

Why you can trust us

Every product you read about on mensfitness.co.uk has been rigorously tested by our experts – whether freelance reviewers or the core MF team. Over the past few weeks, consumer tech expert Lee Bell put the MOVE+ Pro to the test, incorporating it into his recovery routine to see if it truly lives up to its claims. He assessed its performance, ease of use, and overall effectiveness to find out whether this innovative recovery tool is really worth the investment.

Men’s Fitness verdict

Sleek, portable design with modular pods for red and infrared therapy. Effective for pain relief, but battery life could be improved and it would benefit from a companion app.

Setting up the Kineon MOVE+ Pro

Before diving into the nitty-gritty of how the Kineon MOVE+ Pro performs, let’s talk about what it’s like to get it up and running. The device arrives in a compact and protective travel case, which has a built-in charging dock for three modular pods (more about these later) and a zipped storage section for an included charging cable and adjustable straps.

Working out how to set up the gadget was pretty straightforward, apart from how the multi-sectioned strap fit together around the pods. There are no guidelines in the included instruction booklet explaining how this should go, and I personally found it very confusing to work out. I managed to cobble it together somehow, but I’m still not sure whether it’s attached in the intended way!

Design and first impressions

At first glance, the MOVE+ Pro might seem like something from a sci-fi film. It’s sleek, modern design is easy on the eye, although I can imagine it seeming a little daunting if you’re usually a bit of a technophobe.

The device consists of three modular pods that house the red light and infrared lasers, which clip into the aforementioned adjustable strap system. This modularity allows for targeted treatment on various body parts, including the knees, shoulders or elbows. The device is quite lightweight, which means that it doesn’t feel cumbersome, even during long periods of use.

The materials used feel of high quality and durable, which makes me think it’ll stand the test of time. The adjustable straps follow suit, being made from a soft, flexible fabric that secures the pods firmly in place without feeling uncomfortable. This also means the gadget stays put whether you’re sitting, walking around or even performing light exercises.

However, the standout design feature on the MOVE+ Pro is how portable it is. As mentioned earlier, it comes with a compact hard carry case that neatly holds the pods, straps and charging dock and I imagine this will protect it from any hard knocks or drops. The case also means it’s easy to transport the device from A to B, making it perfect for those who travel frequently or need a portable recovery solution. I particularly liked how the charging port is on the outside of the case, covered by a removable dust cap, meaning you don’t need to take the dock or pods out to re-juice them. This dock also recharges all three pods simultaneously, which is a nice touch.

The device’s interface is straightforward, with a single button on each pod to control the power and set the treatment duration. While this is pretty simple, I was quite disappointed that there’s no companion app to help users set up the device or give suggestions for how it can be used, etc. This is usually a given with gadgets these days, especially ones priced as highly as the MOVE+ Pro. Nevertheless, the device did make a strong first impression thanks to its thoughtful design, quality materials and ease of use. And its futuristic look and practical features make it a standout in the crowded market of recovery tools.

Performance and features

Using the MOVE+ Pro is pretty easy. Each pod has a single button to power it on and set the treatment duration, with options for 5, 10, or 15 minutes. That means even those less familiar with tech gadgets can use the device without much hassle. The modular design allows you to position the pods precisely where you need them, whether it’s on your knee, shoulder or back, making it versatile for various types of pain and injuries.

What’s unique about the MOVE+ Pro, however, is that it makes use of a combination of red light and infrared lasers, both known for their therapeutic benefits. The red light, typically at 660nm, works on the skin’s surface, promoting collagen production and accelerating wound healing. Meanwhile, the infrared light, penetrating deeper tissues, targets inflammation and boosts blood circulation, aiding in the repair of muscles and joints. (For a more in-depth understanding of how it works, read our article on the science of red light therapy.)

I have to say that while this is all well and good theoretically, it’s hard to say just how much this device is benefitting you in the way it promises. The first thing people ask me when they spot me using it is, ‘does it work?’ and it’s genuinely hard to say if it definitely does or not. Would my injury feel worse if I hadn’t used it? It’d hard to say. Or perhaps its effects are merely placebo. Either way, I do believe it works to some extent, especially if used every day as part of a recovery routine.

During my testing, I used the MOVE+ Pro mostly on my arm to treat my tennis elbow (which I’ve had a while now due to playing a little too much squash). The device was comfortable enough to wear during daily activities like watching TV or doing household chores. Over several weeks of consistent use, I noticed a significant reduction in pain and an increase in mobility. But like I said earlier, would this have reduced anyway? Maybe so, but I’d like to think not quite as quickly.

One final thing to mention when it comes to performance is the MOVE+ Pro pods’ battery life. While adequate, they do need regular charging, especially if you’re using the device multiple times a day. Each pod will last for about 20 or so 10-minute sessions between charges, which I found to be enough for moderate use, but could definitely be improved for those needing to use it multiple times a day.

How does it compare?

When comparing the MOVE+ to other red light therapy devices on the market, its standout feature is the inclusion of both LEDs and infrared lasers. This allows for deeper penetration and potentially more effective treatment. However, similar devices like the Mito Mobile FLEX offer comparable performance at a much lower price point (albeit with the lack of an infrared laser component).

On the higher end of the spectrum, professional-grade devices like the Thor laser systems promise better performance but, obviously, come at a much higher cost, making them impractical for most people – especially those wanting their own devices at home. In my opinion, the MOVE+ Pro strikes a balance between affordability and advanced tech, making it a great option for those serious about recovery.

What could be better?

While the MOVE+ Pro is an impressive device, there are areas for improvement. The straps, for one, could not only be easier to set up, but could be more versatile to better fit bigger body areas or smaller joints. A companion app – which guides users on set up and how to use the gadget – wouldn’t go amiss either,

I also think the MOVE+ Pro could benefit from a more robust battery to reduce the number of times it needs charging between uses, or at least be updated so it can be operated while charging.

Should you buy the Kineon MOVE+ Pro?

Deciding whether the MOVE+ Pro is worth the investment really depends on your specific needs and budget. If you’re dealing with chronic pain, joint issues or simply looking for a reliable recovery tool, Kineon’s device is a solid choice. Its combination of red light and infrared therapy provides what seems to be effective pain relief and should lead to faster recovery times if used frequently.

However, there’s no way to quantify how well it works, so I cannot say for sure that if you splurge on one of these devices, you will definitely see the benefits. So, if you’re on a tight budget or require a device with more customisable settings, you might want to explore other options. If you ask me, the MOVE+ Pro is best suited for those who are willing to invest in a high-quality, versatile recovery tool and are committed to using it consistently for the best results.
