Gorilla Bow Travel

Best resistance band

Product shot of the Gorilla Bow Travel in use

Men’s Fitness verdict

This powerhouse band system provides a gruelling full-body workout. You can use multiple bands to layer resistance, however loading heavier bands can be tricky.
Pros
 • Powerful full-body system
 • Supports multiple bands simultaneously
Cons
 • Priciest band system on test
 • Will be too large and cumbersome for some
ResistanceUp to 350lb (158.8kg)
ColorsBlack with colored bands
Number of bands4, 9 or 11
Features3-piece bow, simultaneous band use, carry case

The Gorilla Bow Travel will appeal to those who like the idea of investing in a system that covers full-body fitness. With two different sets available offering 9 or 11 bands and up to 330lb (149.7kg) or 350lb (158.8kg) or resistance respectively, you can dial in the right intensity for a highly effective workout.

You can load the bow with up to four bands, giving you four resistance strengths to choose from when you use one band at a time. Or you can use multiple bands simultaneously to layer resistance. This meant we found it easy to quickly drop the weight when fatigue hit – perfect for drop sets.

Roughly 55in (140cm) tall when assembled, we found the Gorilla Bow to be a pretty bulky and imposing fitness band system. In its travel version, though, it detaches into three elements that help it fit easily in a large bag or small suitcase.

With a digital docking station and performance tracking app, these JaxJox adjustable dumbbells would be an impressive addition to any home gym.

They use a USB-powered digital dock for weight selection and a companion app to suggest exercises and track progress. During testing, we found it easy to sync the app for real-time data such as reps, weight, sets, time, average power and total volume.

They do the basics well, too – including a robust design, comfortable grooved handles and secure locking plates.

Just remember to charge via USB, or you won’t be able to change weights.

Crossrope Speed Performance Set

Best skipping rope

crossrope speed performance set

Men’s Fitness verdict

It may be pricey but this is a high-quality rope set for life – guaranteed. It’s a smooth-rotating system that’s easy to switch between rope weights though there are lighter choices for speed work.
Pros
 • Good variation of rope weights
 • Great handle rotation
Cons
 • A little too heavy for speed work
 • Lifetime warranty comes at a price
MaterialsWire inner, PVC coating
Rope weights3oz (85g) / 6oz (170g) / 9oz (255g)
Length8ft (2.45m) / 8ft 6in (2.6m) / 9ft (2.75m) / 9ft 6in (2.9m)
FeaturesFast Clip connection system
Included30 days free membership using the Crossrope app, lifetime handle warranty

Weighted speed ropes are the best way to take your double-unders to the next level, and Crossrope’s Speed Performance Set gives you three weights to choose from. Swapping between the 3oz, 6oz and 9oz rope between workouts is speedy, too, with its Fast Clip connection system.

While testing, we found the handles comfortable to hold and they rotated well, so there’s no hand chafing to worry about. Not many ropes come with a lifetime warranty, and this alone justifies the price tag. Alongside the quality equipment, there’s a subscription-based app with more than a thousand workouts to inspire you in your home gym, too.

JaxJox KettlebellConnect 2.0

Best kettlebell

Product shot of Jaxjox Kettlebell Connect 2.0

Men’s Fitness verdict

With on-demand content, coaching and smart tracking, JaxJox is revolutionising kettlebell workouts. These smarts don’t come cheap though.
Pros
 • Decent top weight
 • Counts reps, sets and weight
Cons
 • Bulky with a big footprint
 • Hardware and premium app are pricey
Weight range12.1lb to 41.9lb / 5.5kg to 19kg
Number of weights6
FeaturesJaxJox app integration; motion sensors track reps, sets, weight, power,
average volume and time; fast-charging USB-C connection

If you like to track your drills or prefer more immersive workouts, you might want to check out the JaxJox KettlebellConnect 2.0. Likewise if you don’t have the floor space in your home gym for a collection of kettlebells. That’s because the JaxJox is a smart adjustable kettlebell that can internally select six weights between 5.5kg and 19kg, and packs motion sensors that track reps, sets and power.

We were impressed by the fact you can also follow complete drill-by-drill workouts on your smartphone, or join on-demand coach-led classes, tracking stats as you go. However, you’ll have to pay a Peloton-style premium to access these features. Although you need power for the selection and smart training features, we found you could get around 14 hours of training time on a single charge.

Wattbike Atom

Best exercise bike

Product of a Wattbike Atom exercise bike

Men’s Fitness verdict

One of the closest experiences to real road ridings we’ve found. It’s a significant investment but the insights from the Atom Hub will definitely improve your fitness.
Pros
 • Easy set-up
 • Genuine real-ride feel
 • A wealth of useful insights
Cons
 • Noisy
 • Feels more geared towards experienced riders

The latest version of the Wattbike Atom has improved what has already become the industry standard for exercise bikes, with an electromagnetic resistance monitor for a quieter and smoother ride, especially when shifting gears. Data points are now read 1,000 times a second (it doesn’t get more real-time than that) with accuracy levels of +/- 1%.

We love how the bike automatically reacts with increased resistance to elevation changes, bringing unparalleled realism to virtual mountain stages. With great connectivity and plenty of custom set-up options, as well as free trails to partner apps including Zwift, Rouvy and Strava, we’d say it’s a worthwhile investment for anyone who’s serious about their cycling and a great all-round choice if you’re looking for the best home gym equipment.

Peloton Tread

Best treadmill

Peloton Tread against white background

Men’s Fitness verdict

With the wide range of workouts on offer the Peloton Tread is an ideal alternative to a gym membership. If you can take the initial price hit you’ll get years of enjoyment and fitness benefits.
Pros
 • Plenty of workouts to suit everyone
 • Useful instruction and insights
 • Clear touchscreen and great sound
Cons
 • No custom mode
 • Expensive

With membership giving you access to thousands of Peloton classes, you’ll never get tired of the Peloton Tread. It has speeds of up to 12.5mph (20kpm) and can replicate gradients up to 12.5%, providing enormous variety to walking, hiking and running exercises – as well as providing yoga or lifting exercises for a thorough all-body workout.

We especially loved the 23.8in (60cm) HD touchscreen operation, which is intuitive and features all the on-screen metrics you need. The carbon steel platform will withstand the rigours of regular use, and Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity means it’ll play nicely with any heart rate monitor or other smart kit. If you’re looking for an alternative to gym membership, the Peloton Tread might just be it.

AssaultBike Classic

Best air bike

The AssaultBike Classic

Men’s Fitness verdict

There’s a reason why we see the iconic AssaultBike in so many fitness spaces: it’s a robust, no-nonsense machine that just gets the job done. It’s super-simple to use too.
Pros
 • Robust design
 • Easy to programme
 • Upgradeable parts
Cons
 • Console can be hard to read
FrameHigh tensile steel
Features6-way adjustable seat, 25in (63.5cm) steel fan
Warranty5 years frame, 2 years replacement parts

If you’re looking to invest in some of the best home gym equipment, why not try an air bike? Pro athletes, CrossFitters and regular gym-goers alike test their stamina on this no-nonsense machine, and it’s easy to see why. Now seen as industry standard in both enthusiast and elite fitness spaces, even this cheapest version in the range has everything you need for calorie-torching workouts.

With almost all moving parts available as aftermarket spares, the AssaultBike Classic is a sound investment that’ll provide years of cardio training. In our opinion, Assault Fitness has got all the basics right, with a robust design, good ergonomics, easy-to-access workouts and comfortable and adjustable contact points. It’s also protected by a five-year warranty, for extra peace of mind, and comes in two other versions with upgraded connectivity.

Technogym Wellness Ball Active Sitting

Best gym ball

The Technogym Wellness Ball Active Sitting

Men’s Fitness verdict

Exercise balls don’t get better (or more expensive) than this. Firmness, durability and comfort are all top-notch and it makes a useful core-engaging office chair too.
Pros
 • Burst-resistance material
 • Doubles up as a chair
Cons
 • Expensive
 • Only one size
Size21.5in (55cm)
Pump includedNo
Weight limit353lb / 160kg
ColorBlack

There’s no getting away from that eye-watering price but the Italian-made Technogym Wellness Ball Active Sitting could be your exercise ball for life. It also doubles up as a robust, ergonomic office chair. However, there are cheaper versions with lower specs if you really can’t justify the price.

Sitting on the Wellness Ball involves constant micro-movements, which improves the spine-stabilising action of your abdominal and lumbar muscles. A denser lower half is designed to improve stability and ensure it won’t roll away mid-exercise, which we found to be true. Extra points from me for the removeable multi-layered fabric, which improves support, cushioning and grip. We also like the added handle for easy transportation.

Theragun Elite

Best massage gun

theragun massage gun, home gym equipment review
The Theragun Pro is the latest version of the percussive therapy device

Men’s Fitness verdict

Theragun has improved on older models to produce a dependable and customisable massage gun. The new OLED screen makes it intuitive to use too.
Pros
 • Effective 16mm pummeling amplitude
 • Useful app insights
 • Customisable
Cons
 • Expensive
 • Not the best battery life
Battery life120 minutes
DetailsSmart app integration with Bluetooth; OLED screen with force meter
ColorsBlack, white

If you’re looking to buy the best home gym equipment, you’ll probably be focusing on strength and cardio kit. However, it’s important to also prioritise recovery. The Theragun Elite has a pummelling head with an amplitude of 0.6in (16mm) that gets deep into muscles and sees off knots and tight spots with 40 percussions per second and up to 40lb (18kg) of force.

With older models it wasn’t easy to know when you were using them right, but this latest generation Elite is a whole lot smarter, with an OLED screen and a force sensor. We also love how it syncs to a smartphone app that tells you if you’re applying the right pressure and serves up real-time move-by-move guides for everything from easing tight hamstrings to unstiffening shoulders.

We found the new Elite to be much, quieter and more customisable than older models, too. It comes with five built-in speeds, but you can also use the app to set the percussions per minute anywhere within the 1750-2400 range.

You get 120-minute massage time on a single charge and just two minutes’ attention to each muscle group can help stifle post-workout soreness.

The Lululemon (Big) Mat

Best exercise mat

Partially unrolled Lululemon the (Big) Mat

Men’s Fitness verdict

Extra thick, extra wide and extra stylish. It seems that Lululemon has done the impossible and reinvented one of the simplest pieces of fitness kit you can buy.
Pros
 • Longest on test
 • Reversible
Cons
 • Expensive
 • Not suitable for those with rubber or latex allergies
MaterialsFSC-certified natural rubber
Dimensions83.9 x 27.9in / 213 x 71cm
FeaturesReversible, antimicrobial additive
Colors6 multi-coloured designs

A good quality exercise mat is an essential bit of home gym equipment. The Lululemon (Big) Mat may seem on the pricey side but its FSC-certified rubber construction has such a long-lasting, quality feel that it could easily be your mat for life. Its top layer absorbs moisture and an antimicrobial layer keeps mould, mildew and bad smells at bay – it felt shop-fresh each time we used it.

It’s called the (Big) Mat for a reason, as it’s around 4in (10cm) wider and a whopping 12in (30cm) longer than regular mats. It’s reversible too, so you can swap between smooth and grippy surfaces depending on your workout. We found it soft and pleasant to the touch, and easy to wipe down and clean after each session. There are six eye-catching marble designs available, too.

Primal Strength Personal Series 75lb / 34kg

Best adjustable dumbbells

primal personal series adjustable dumbbell

Men’s Fitness verdict

This beastly set of bells is straightforward to set up and offers a massive 21 different weights to work with. They are on the more expensive side, but it’s worth remembering these come as a pair.
Pros
 • Easy to adjust and use
 • Wide, comfortable grip
 • Extensive weight range
Cons
 • Relatively large footprint
Weight range11lb-75lb / 5kg-34kg
Increments21
Dimensions21.3 x 8.5 x 7.2in / 542 x 216 x 183mm

If you’re looking for the best home gym equipment, a pair of dumbbells is a great place to start. The Primal Strength 75lb / 34kg adjustable dumbbells are a high-quality, versatile investment for any home gym user. You get a whopping 21 different weights to work with, over nearly a 65lb (30kg) range. That should satisfy even the most experienced weight trainer.

They’re longer than most adjustable dumbbells, but we found the slider selection system to be simple and intuitive to use and the textured-grip handles stay comfortable throughout long workouts.

Primal Personal Series HIIT Bench

Best exercise bench

Product shot of a Primal HIIT workout bench and weight accessories

Men’s Fitness verdict

With plenty of storage for the included weights and accessories, there’s much more to this HIIT bench than meets the eye. It’s a pricey but worthwhile investment.
Pros
 • Good amount of storage
 • Comes with a wide range of accessories
 • Easy manoeuvrability with attached wheels
Cons
 • Heavy and expensive
 • Not ideal for small rooms
Accessories2x adjustable dumbbells, adjustable kettlebell, foam roller,
resistance band, glute band, battle rope, power band
Warranty1 year parts
Net weight104lb / 47kg
Dimensions51.2 x 33.5 x 23.2in / 130 x 85 x 59cm

Far more than just an adjustable exercise bench, Primal’s Personal Series bench is an all-in-one mini gym, featuring the company’s popular adjustable dumbbells and kettlebell – which if bought individually would cost almost as much as this entire set.

All of the included accessories (there’s also a foam roller, resistance band, glute band, battle rope and power band) stow away inside the unit. Together, we’d say it’s a strength and HIIT training powerhouse that’s well worth the investment if you’re looking for the best home gym equipment.

Best squat rack accessory

Signature Fitness Plate-Loaded Lever Arm review

Men’s Fitness verdict

If you want an alternative for lower-body training, or a way to perform different exercises with limited space to spare, then this is a solid item to have.
Pros
 • Allows you to squat without pressure on the spine
 • Can be used for curls, rows and other exercises
 • Easy to set up
Cons
 • Can only hold Olympic plates
 • Dip belt not included
MaterialsBlack powder-coated 11-gauge steel

squat racks, with rack hole diameters of 5/8in or larger

An ideal accessory for those with a squat rack at home, this level arm can be a real gamechanger. Just attach to your own dip belt and you can be doing back-friendly belt squats in no time. We found it simple to set up and store. Plus, it fits on most squat racks and can be used for rows and curls too. What’s more, it’s not going to break the bank either.

How we test home gym equipment

Our team of testers and reviewers has a wealth of experience in putting new gym equipment through its paces. They spend a significant period of time with each product, testing its limits and limitations and working through its entire range of intended uses to give an honest and objective review. That gives you everything you need to make an informed decision in choosing a product that’s right for you and your fitness goals.

Benefits of setting up a home gym

Upgrading your home gym offers a range of perks. Firstly, after initially splashing some cash on your new set-up, you won’t need to pay any monthly or yearly gym membership fees, meaning your kit will pay for itself in no time. Secondly, a home gym can be a more time-effective way to squeeze in a workout when you’re busy, with no need for any lengthy commutes or queuing times at the weight rack.

And even if you do still structure your training week around regular gym visits, it’s still worth buying equipment to use at home. Having weight training or mobility gear to hand can help you plan regular pre-work sessions or squeeze in ad-hoc workouts between work and family commitments.

Home gym vs gym membership

While there’s no concrete right or wrong when it comes to choosing between visiting a local gym or kitting out your home gym, there are various factors that might sway you one way or the other.

With no need to commute, queue or pay monthly fees, home gyms offer a myriad of benefits, as outlined above. On the other hand, gym memberships certainly pack some perks, too. For starters, you won’t need to spend hours researching, buying and setting up your new equipment – you can just sign up and go. Plus, for many people, actively leaving the house and entering a designated fitness space can work wonders for boosting workout motivation.

How to set up your home gym

If you’re building a home gym from scratch, it can be tricky to know where to start. With a huge selection on the market, what equipment do you actually need? Well, whatever your focus – strength training, CrossFit and cardio or mobility, or keeping in shape for outdoor pursuits such as athletics, cycling or team sports – it pays to have regular access to weights or resistance bands, as well as exercise balls, skipping ropes and exercise mats in your home gym. Recovery kit like foam rollers and massage guns are useful, too, particularly after heavy sessions.

Of course, high-end equipment such as air bikes, exercise bikes, rowers, treadmills and weights benches, traditionally the preserve of high-street gyms, are useful investments and are making their way into more and more home gyms and garages.

The key to any effective training routine is regularity, and that means easy access. As long as you tailor your home gym kit to focus on your goals, the only thing that’s stopping you from achieving them is you. Not having time to get to the gym is no longer an excuse. You’re much more accountable for your training with a well kitted-out home gym, and that can only be a good thing.

The post We ran for miles to put the best treadmills through their paces appeared first on Men's Fitness.

Treadmills come with a wide variety of features as well as price tags. We hit the running deck to select the best treadmills for your needs and budget.

If you’re in the market for a home treadmill there are a number of factors to consider. Your budget is obviously a major one, and your available space is another. But are you looking for a treadmill with an incline feature for hill training? Do you want on-demand content and classes? Or how about gamification to appease your competitive streak? Or do you just want a pure, simple, unadulterated running experience? Our pick of the best treadmills below address all these considerations, so read on and pick your perfect treadmill.

What is the best treadmill?

It’s hard to look beyond the Peloton Tread as the best treadmill available in 2024. The quality of its hardware is second to none and the range of workouts and instructors accessible on its large touchscreen is mind-boggling. If it weren’t for that steep price plus the membership fee, it’d be nailed on for five stars.

Other treadmill recommendations

Best treadmill for small spacesThough some treadmills like the Mobvoi are foldable, they don’t fold flat. That’s where the Echelon Stride Auto Folding Treadmill comes into its own, allowing it to be stored out of the way when not in use.
Best treadmill designThe sumptuous curves of the American Weights Curved Wooden Treadmill are a refreshing change from all the sleek black functional designs. It’s curved, screen-free design offers the purest, most comfortable running experience too.
Best budget treadmillWith every other treadmill on this list priced north of four figures, the Mobvoi Home Treadmill Incline stands out as excellent value. It’s by no means a budget build either, and its 15% incline is the steepest on test.

Why you can trust Men’s Fitness

At Men’s Fitness we pride ourselves on delivering information that serves a singular purpose: to improve some aspect of your health, fitness or wellbeing. For over 16 years, we’ve been publishing authoritative health and fitness content – written by our expert editors and contributors. 1. Peloton Tread

Peloton Tread

Men’s Fitness verdict

It’s hard to fault the hardware, and the range of instructors and workouts is seemingly endless. If you can take the cost on the chin, you’ll have one of the best cardio machines going.
Pros
 • Lots of varied instructors
 • Good range of workouts
 • Large, clear touchscreen
Cons
 • No custom mode
 • Expensive even before membership cost

With the Tread, Peloton’s move into the running space looks like it’ll be a runaway success. With its vast array of on-demand content, it’s not just something to run on: it’s a whole new workout world. There’s all the motivation and support you could want from instructor-led workouts. Or you can opt for scenic or guided runs – as well as bootcamps, interval runs, weighted workouts, yoga classes and much more.

We really like the auto incline feature, which adjusts the deck incline to match the session underway. The large touchscreen is also crisp and responsive, with excellent sounding speakers as well as Bluetooth connectivity. If you’re looking for an all-in-one alternative to gym membership, we don’t think you can get much better than the Peloton Tread.

2. Mobvoi Home Treadmill Incline

Man using the Mobvoi home treadmill

Men’s Fitness verdict

The smartwatch syncing is something of a gamechanger and, combined with its incline feature and competitive price, makes the Mobvoi Incline well worth seeking out, though the deck is a little cramped.
Pros
 • Substantial 15% incline
 • Live data streamed to smartwatches
 • Quiet 3HP motor
 • Compact folding design
Cons
 • Comparatively small running deck
 • Max speed only 14kmph
 • Doesn’t fold flat

Despite being what on paper looks like a ‘budget’ alternative, the Mobvoi Home Treadmill Incline punches well above its weight. It boasts a 15% incline feature – matched here only by the BowFlex BXT8Ji – and a compact, semi-foldable footprint.

The standout feature for us though is the Mobvoi’s ability to livestream data direct from your smartwatch so you’ve got useful stats such as heart rate and calories burned right in front of you. The Mobvoi reciprocates by sending workout data such as steps and distance to your wearable too. Given that the Mobvoi is at least half the price of any other treadmill on test, it’s an easy one for us to recommend.

3. American Weights Curved Wooden Treadmill

American Weights Curved Wooden Treadmill

Men’s Fitness verdict

American Weights’ treadmill oozes class and will elevate any home studio. Don’t expect touchscreen programmes or gamification – this is for the unadulterated joy of running, pure and simple.
Pros
 • Striking design
 • Curved belt reduces impact on body
 • Provides a better cardio workout than most treadmills
 • Encourages a more natural running style
Cons
 • Expensive
 • No set programmes
 • You can’t change resistance

The American Weights Curved Wooden Treadmill is a different beast altogether from the other treadmills here. Its svelte wooden curves wouldn’t look out of place in a penthouse apartment (though they might in a dusty garage) and the curved deck surface provides a less impactful, more natural way to run.

The fact that it’s an unpowered deck means you’ll spend more energy and therefore get a more effective cardio workout. There’s no touchscreen or interactivity – this is a treadmill for those who like to get lost in the simple pleasure of running.

4. Echelon Stride Auto Folding Treadmill

Echelon Stride auto-folding treadmill

Men’s Fitness verdict

You’ll need your own screen, the Echelon app and subscription if you want live content but overall it’s a good value folding treadmill ideal for those with limited space.
Pros
 • Good value
 • Folds flat
 • Quick adjustment
Cons
 • No screen
 • Costly subscription fee
 • Limited top speed

If space it as a premium at home, you need a treadmill with a compact footprint that folds down flat. That’s where the Echelon Stride comes in. It folds down automatically to a size that can fit flush up against a wall or even under some beds, with a height of just 10in / 25.4cm. Despite this, the Stride gives you access to live and on-demand classes from the Echelon Fit app – you just need to bring your own screen.

Take part in the interactive leaderboards with family and friends or just sync the Stride to your third-party apps of choice. However you use it, Echelon’s treadmill is one of the most convenient and user-friendly ones around.

5. BowFlex BXT8Ji Treadmill

Image of a Bowflex treadmill set up at home

Men’s Fitness verdict

The Bowflex BXT8Ji is great value and does the important stuff really well, with the option to use your own screen and the optional JRNY app for a more engaging experience.
Pros
 • Good value with 2-month JRNY membership
 • Solid performance and useful 15% incline
 • User-friendly with 26 workout programs
Cons
 • Display is fairly basic
 • Noise levels might limit use in shared spaces

BowFlex has eschewed superfluous tech to keep the price of its BXT8Ji treadmill decent value. Instead it’s concentrated on core functionality and ease of use – opting for solid, dependable functionality over bells and whistles. Still, there are 26 workout programs to keep you engaged.

Of course, you can connect your own digital device to the JRNY app if you want to get more involved. There’s a useful incline feature, giving you gradients up to 15% to work on your hill reps. And BowFlex’s clever hydraulic system folds the unit down, making it easier to move.

How we test the best treadmills

Our product testers have years of experience testing and reviewing all kinds of fitness gear and products, from apparel and nutrition to watches to high-end home gym equipment. They applied the same rigorous process to testing the best treadmills as they would to any other fitness tech, using each product for at least a month and using the entire range of features – including incline settings, watch or heart rate monitor syncing and on-demand classes. They then marked each treadmill for features, build quality, ease of use (including portability and storage) and value – before formulating an overall score.

What is the best rowing machine?

Having sampled a wide selection of many of the top choices in this market segment, MF’s team of product reviewers came to the conclusion that the NordicTrack RW900 is the best rowing machine on the market right now. It’s smooth, quiet, and (reasonably) comfortable in operation, and it’s far from basic too. Its large touchscreen isn’t just for show – within it, you’ll find a deep library of training classes and workouts, and there’s a degree of personalization to reflect your progress too.

The only major downsides are that it’s got quite a large footprint, so may be difficult to store, and it’ll leave an even larger dent in your bank balance. However, if you’ve got ample room indoors and enough budget to justify the cost, you can’t do better.

Other recommendations

Best for workout motivation

The Aviron Strong Series Rower not only comes with a library of trainer-led workouts, but also a whole range of streaming service options. Membership fees will add up, but at least you’ll never have a boring workout ever again.

Best for indoor storage

The WaterRower Original Series machine looks unlike any other rowing machine thanks to its wooden design, which in the eyes of some, might also give it additional aesthetic appeal for your home gym. Plus, its comparatively compact nature means it takes up slightly less room than some of the other machines on this list.

1. NordicTrack RW900 Rower

Nordic Track RW900 rower review

Men’s Fitness verdict

The smooth and comfortable ride of the NordicTrack makes for an enjoyable rowing simulation. It’s a great low-impact cardio choice if you have the space and will make the most of the subscription.
Pros
 • Exquisite design and quiet running
 • Large touchscreen with great speakers
 • Huge library of trainer-led workouts
 • Workouts geared to your progression
Cons
 • Premium price with extra monthly membership
 • Very large and bulky
Display22in touchscreen
Dimensions82 x 22 x 52in / 208 x 55.8 x 132.1cm
ConnectivityBluetooth
Warranty10-year frame, 2-year parts

You’ll see the RW900 in plenty of commercial fitness spaces, due to its premium design and ultra-quiet running. Its impressive 10-year frame guarantee means it’s a worthwhile home investment too, if you can find the cash – it’s $1,999 (plus $39 / £34 per month membership) – and the space.

We liked the tilting touchscreen, which gives you access to loads of premium membership content, and SmartAdjust machine learning technology means every workout is tailored to suit you. With the RW900, smart training just got a whole lot smarter.

2. Aviron Strong Series Rower

Product shot of an Aviron Strong Series rowing machine

Men’s Fitness verdict

The Aviron is great at gamifying your sweat sessions and with access to a host of streaming services on its bright 22in touchscreen, your workouts will be anything but boring.
Pros
 • Great for beginners
 • Easy to stand and store
 • Low-decibel resistance mechanisms
 • Membership includes Amazon Prime, YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and YouTube access
Cons
 • Expensive with optional membership fees
 • Bulky and requires tall ceilings
Display22in touchscreen
Dimensions84 x 27 x 48in / 213.4 x 68.6 x 121.9cm
ConnectivityBluetooth
Warranty10-year frame, 1-year parts

The Aviron Strong’s dual air and magnetic resistance gives plenty of scope for fine tuning your workout and offers an authentic rowing experience. Plus, we found that its Whisper nylon belt keeps noise to a minimum too.

At $24 per month, membership is reasonably priced and gives you access not only to coached, guided and structured programmes on multiple profiles, but to Netflix, Disney+ and Spotify streaming platforms, among others. As you can imagine, this kept us suitably entertained as we rowed.

3. WaterRower Original Series

waterrower original series

Men’s Fitness verdict

We instantly loved the WaterRower’s unique design, and its operation is a smooth and fluid as it looks. There’s no large display or touchscreen though – but the experience is as authentic as it gets.
Pros
 • Unique design
 • Natural, fluid movement
 • Easy to store
 • Choice of wood finishes
Cons
 • Low seat and steep angled foot position
 • High price with costly additions
DisplayS4 Performance Monitor
Dimensions82.3 x 20.9 x 22in / 209 x 53 x 56cm
ConnectivityOptional Bluetooth Commodule
Warranty5-year frame, 3-year parts

The WaterRower is a rowing machine unlike any other, using a unique water flywheel to provide a smooth, realistic and immersive rowing experience. While testing, we found the standard monitor to be fairly basic but there are plenty of upgrades available to give you Bluetooth connectivity or to allow you to use your own tablet or laptop to enjoy third-party rowing apps.

It has a stunning design that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home or swanky penthouse and there are a number of high-end wooden finishes to choose from.

4. Hydrow Wave Rower

Product shot of Hydrow Wave rowing machine

Men’s Fitness verdict

It’s a smooth, sleek and compact rower bursting with features, but the screen and audio don’t quite match up to the original Hydrow. As the company just makes rowers the subscription seems pricey too.
Pros
 • Cheaper than the original
 • Compact design
 • Smooth and quiet operation
 • Engaging classes and instructors
Cons
 • Screen can be tricky to operate
 • Built-in speakers could be better
 • Bluetooth audio delay
Display16in touchscreen
Dimensions80.3 x 19.3 x 43.3in / 204 x 49 x 110cm
ConnectivityBluetooth
Warranty1 year

Smaller and cheaper than the OG Hydrow, the new Wave has a sleek, stylish and minimal brushed aluminium design. There are a number of custom colours available too, so it can make a design statement in any living room.

The Hydrow Wave features a 16in touchscreen which gives you access to plenty of engaging live classes and on-demand content for a completely connected fitness experience. Overall, for us, this is one of the most realistic and authentic rowing experiences on the market.

How we tested the best rowing machines

Our experienced product testers tested each rowing machine in their own homes for at least a month. They tested each machine as a standalone rowing experience throughout its entire damper setting range and explored each machine’s connectivity and media options and subscription and app offerings.

Our testers were also making notes on durability, ease of use and storage. They marked each rowing machine for its design, features and suitability for a home gym setup before giving them an overall score to rank them in our best rowing machine buyers guide.

What to look for when buying a rowing machine

If you’re in the market for a rower, there’s now a surprisingly wide range of options to chose from. From top-of-the-range $2K-plus machines with large touchscreens with gamification and virtual rowing options to simple sub-$1K models that look less like spaceships and offer a more streamlined experience, there’s a rowing machine for most budgets.

Most use air or magnetic resistance from an adjustable flywheel for you to pull against. Others, like the WaterRower Original, use water as a resistance medium. They tend to have chain or belt-drive mechanisms attached to the ‘oar’ handle, and a movable seat on wheels or rails.

Those with larger displays or digital touchscreens will often require a membership subscription to unlock on-demand classes, games and virtual rowing options, so make sure you factor that monthly expense in when making your decision.

Benefits of using rowing machines

Indoor rowing, like indoor cycling, has a major advantage over treadmills in that it provides a zero-impact cardio workout. It can burn a serious amount of calories too, allowing you to torch more than 300 in just 30 minutes – once you’re clued up on how to use rowing machines effectively.

It offers a higher oxygen consumption and at a lower heart rate than treadmill workouts. Oh, and it’s also one of the few forms of cardio that packs on serious muscle.

If you have the room and the budget, the best rowing machines provide an effective endurance workout to improve heart and lung function while working every major muscle in your body. The drive phase engages your leg muscles, then your core and finally your upper body.

Other benefits include improving joint health, mobility and flexibility and core strength. With all their available metrics, rowing machines are great tools for goal-setting too.

For an engaging indoor home cycling experience, we recommend saddling up on one of the best exercise bikes.

Exercise bikes have really come into their own over the past few years. Not only are fitness enthusiasts turning to them when it’s too cold, dark or wet outside; they’re also realizing they are useful tools for getting in regular, measured training.

On a traditional bike you have less time or opportunity to assess your workout. On the road there’s traffic to contend with; off-road there’s changing, technical terrain to tackle. So you’re less able to monitor whether you’re riding in a certain heart rate zone, or at a particular power output or revs per minute etc.

It’s also difficult to get your interval sessions in when you’re stopping at traffic lights or riding on rolling off-road terrain.

Exercise bikes allow you to dictate your workout. They provide a platform for more measured efforts than cycling outdoors. But unlike previous iterations, they also offer an immersive experience, with the aid of virtual rides or exercise classes on demand. It may not beat the feeling of real riding but with features like incline and road surface replication, the best exercise bikes come pretty close.

Why you can trust Men’s Fitness

We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Our team of exercise bike testers included experienced product testers, PTs and fitness writers – as well as the core MF team – who know exactly what sets the best products apart from the rest. Find out more about how we test.

These are the best exercise bikes we’ve tested

Packed with smart features and brimming with key insights, the Wattbike Atom is one of the most powerful home training tools you can buy. If you can stomach the initial cost, you’ll have a valuable fitness investment that we think it’s impossible to get tired of.

Other exercise bike recommendations

Best for realismGiving the Wattbike Atom a run for its money, the Garmin TACX Neo Bike Plus provides an equally authentic ride experience. We’re big fans of the road replication feature, where a bottom bracket motor vibrates to give the feel of cobbles or gravel.
Best for dynamic workoutsEven with immersive content, most exercise bikes provide fairly static experiences. Not the Bowflex VeloCore, which tilts on its axis to replicate the feeling of cornering and targets your core and arms as well as your legs.
Best air bikeThe OG of air bikes, there’s a reason why you’ll see an AssaultBike Classic in most gyms. A robust and reliable way to torch calories, its low maintenance and aftermarket accessories have helped it become an industry standard.

1. Wattbike Atom

Product shot of an indoor exercise bikeMen's Fitness editor's choice badge

Men’s Fitness verdict

Although it’s a big investment, if cycling is your go-to and you’re not a fan of turbo trainers, this is one of the best bikes you can get – and the closest to replicating the feeling of real riding.
Pros
 • Easy set-up
 • Genuine real-ride feel
 • Smart resistance mode is a handy automatic gear change option
 • A wealth of insights on the Wattbike Hub
Cons
 • Noisy
 • Feels geared more towards experienced cyclists than beginners

There’s a reason the Wattbike Atom has become the number one exercise bike in public gyms and elite-level fitness spaces alike. It’s the perfect machine to make the most of the Hub’s wealth of workouts and training plans. Use the Hub’s pedal efficiency score to hone your technique or replicate some of the toughest climbs on the pro racing circuit.

The bike itself is super-sturdy and will last years of abuse, yet is precise enough to read your crank position 1,000 times a second to ensure exact shifting. You can go from using the 22 integrated gears in manual mode to ‘ergo’ mode, which automatically selects your gear to suit the gradient or power requirement – at the push of a button. OK, so you need to bring your own screen to the party, but the Wattbike has everything else you need to take your cycling to the next level.

2. Garmin TACX Neo Bike Plus

The Garmin TACX Neo Bike Plus smart bike

Men’s Fitness verdict

Highly adjustable and hugely enjoyable, the Garmin TACX Neo Bike Plus is the pinnacle of exercise bikes and offers a realistic, immersive riding experience.
Pros
 • Excellent app compatability
 • Immersive real-road feel
 • Highly controllable fans
Cons
 • Some flex in the drop bars

The days of exercise bikes being divorced from the real-world cycling experience are long gone. Garmin is changing the game with the TACX Neo Bike Plus, which has a built-in motor to replicate the ‘rumble’ of riding on different road surfaces, including cobbles and gravel, as well as resistance to mimic climbs of up to 25%.

Its programmable shifters can be made to behave like Shimano, SRAM or Campagnolo ones, and although there’s a build-in data screen, you can pair any Bluetooth screen with the Garmin app, as well as Strava, Zwift and TrainerRoad, for an immersive real-time ride experience. Close your eyes and feel the wind from the adjustable-power fans on your face and you could easily be out on your favorite ride or a famous climb on the cobbled Spring Classics.

3. Bowflex VeloCore

Front-on shot of a man riding a leaning Bowflex VeloCore exercise bike

Men’s Fitness verdict

If you have the space and cash and love cycling, the Bowflex VeloCore may be the exercise bike for you. This innovative bike offers a unique workout experience, and you’ll reap the fitness benefits.
Pros
 • Leaning feature targets the core and arms as well as legs
 • Decent selection of riding modes
 • One-year free JRNY app membership
 • Smooth and quiet ride
Cons
 • Design is bigger and heavier than most indoor bikes
 • Expensive

No bike works your core quite like the Bowflex VeloCore. That’s because at the press of a button it morphs from a stationary bike to a tilting one, adding a sense of realism and a whole new dimension to your cycling workout. It’s built-in screen comes in two sizes – this 22in version and a ‘cheaper’ 16in one – both of which can be used with a variety of streaming apps.

You get a readout of all your usual metrics, as well as the amount of lean – which you can switch on and off mid-ride. You can also use the large red knob to select one of 100 resistance levels to make your workouts more challenging. A one-year subscription is included to the JRNY adaptive fitness platform, which includes a personalized coaching system and daily custom workouts.

4. AssaultBike Classic

Product shot of air bike

Men’s Fitness verdict

The AssaultBike Classic has a robust design, good ergonomics, easy-to-access workouts and comfortable and adjustable contact points – and offers an ‘easy’ way to torch calories.
Pros
 • Robust design
 • Easy-to-programme workouts
 • Upgradable parts
Cons
 • Console can be hard to read

If torching fat is your primary aim when looking for an exercise bike, there’s little more focused on this task than an air bike. And given that the AssaultBike Classic is the OG of air bikes, and can still be found in commercial gyms up and down the land, it’s still the one to get.

While newer models might have a few more features, there’s nothing like the paired-back simplicity of the Classic. The ergonomics are dialed in, the belt drive super-smooth and almost every part can either be upgraded or replaced as an aftermarket purchase. If there’s such a thing as an air bike for life, the AssaultBike Classic is it.

5. Apex Smart Bike

Apex Smart Bike

Men’s Fitness verdict

You forgo the integrated screen and immersive experience of pricier models, but pound for pound the Apex Smart Bike is up there with the best.
Pros
 • Competitive price
 • Modern, stylish design
 • Well made and easy to set up
 • Membership inclues an extensive range of classes and instructors
Cons
 • No built-in screen
 • The seat can be slightly uncomfortable

With most bikes on test costing two grand and over, it’s refreshing to find an well designed exercise bike that comes in under the $1,000 / £1,000 mark. The Apex may be cheap, but it’s by no means light on features, with Bluetooth, WiFI and USB connectivity. Though there’s no built-in screen, you can tap into the fully featured Apex app through your iOS device.

Apex membership gives you access to a plethora of engaging instructor-led workouts, as well as playlists galore. All your riding stats are accessible throughout, including an approximate power output (calculated using current resistance and your RPM). It looks more stylish than most, so won’t look out of place in your living room. It’s also available in three colors, as well as the usual black.

How we test these exercise bikes

Our team of reviewers took delivery of these exercise bikes at home, to see how straight-forward delivery, unboxing and set-up was. They then joined any bundled content subscription services or fitness platforms, examining the quality of on-demand classes or training insights each provided. Where appropriate, they paired the bikes with third-party apps such as Zwift or Rouvy to assess each bike’s training versatility. They also assessed the reliability and performance of any Bluetooth or ANT+ connectivity by pairing to Android and iOS phones and tablets, as well as third-party heart rate monitors and smart watches, testing multiple connections where possible.

Our reviewers spent at least a month with each exercise bike in order to test each feature comprehensively and to assess the bike’s overall performance. Their workouts included interval sessions and longer endurance efforts. Where available, they’d also create workouts that utilized the bike’s full gear ratios, resistance ranges or hill incline features. Finally our testers examined build quality and looked for any potential wear issues that arose after at least a month of intense testing. Out testers took price, availability and access to after-market upgrades or replacement parts into consideration when giving each bike an overall score.

What to look for in the best exercise bikes

Resistance: Ideally you want as wide a resistance or gearing range as possible. Systems can vary immensely, from a simple adjustable flywheel to replicating complete drivetrains from specific manufacturers such as SRAM, Campagnolo and Shimano. Some systems are advanced rollers, on which you can mount your own bike, making the transition between indoor and outdoor riding as seamless as possible.

Adjustability: All indoor cycles will have some form of saddle and bar adjustability. Ideally you want both horizontal and vertical adjustment so you can dial in your perfect fit. Most also have quick-release adjustments and measurement scales, allowing you to quickly swap set-ups between riders.

Connectivity: Are you looking to connect a heart rate monitor or Bluetooth headphones or to stream content to a larger screen? Be sure to check out ANT+ and Bluetooth connectivity.

Comfort: Contact points are particularly important for promoting comfort – particularly over longer sessions. Saddles are a particularly subjective piece of kit. Only real-world testing will tell you if the saddle and bar set-up will be comfortable for you. So if you can try before you buy, so much the better. Most models also have swapable pedals so you can ride with trainers in toe straps or use your own SPD-specific pedals.

Interactivity: Whereas air bikes tend to just have simple screens with visual feedback showing speed, rpm, calories or heart rate, any indoor bike worth its salt will have some form of interactivity. Whether its via a built-in monitor or your own phone or tablet, you should be able to stream interactive content or access on-demand classes to supplement your workout. Though you may well have to pay a monthly subscription for these services.

Compact footprint: The actual bodies of most exercise bikes are quite compact, but watch out for the stands, which will increase the footprint significantly. Handlebar extensions and screen housings or holders can also create a significant overhang at the front, which will increase the space needed to store the bike.

We think these are the best gym shorts for men in 2024 https://mensfitness.co.uk/review/best-gym-shorts-for-men/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 12:06:34 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=491 To have the freedom to move without chafing or restriction you need high-performance training shorts

The post We think these are the best gym shorts for men in 2024 appeared first on Men's Fitness.

]]>
High-performance workout shorts give you the freedom to move without chafing, restriction or overheating during your gym sessions – here’s our pick of the best gym shorts for men.

Gym shorts are a bit like sports boxers: not the most exciting bit of gear, but find the best pair and you won’t want to wear anything else.

Conversely, wear the wrong type of shorts and you’ll soon know it. Because if you’ve had the misfortune of wearing an ill-fitting or ill-suited pair you’ll know that the chafing and general discomfort can ruin a workout.

Of course, style is subjective and there are various lengths, colors and materials to choose from. However, most men want a pair that sit an inch or two above the knee (those hard-earned quad muscles deserve some limelight). You also want the shorts material to be light enough to go unnoticed during high-intensity workouts. Though they shouldn’t be so flimsy that your gentleman’s agreement takes center stage.

Zipped pockets can be good if you prefer to hit the gym sans backpack. But bear in mind that big zips can rattle around, which can be off-putting during vigorous exercises – burpees, for example.

To help make your decision easier, here’s our list of the best gym shorts for men.

These are the best gym shorts for men

Competition is fierce in this category but we think the Vuori Kore Short makes pretty good on its claim to be ‘one short for every sport’. They’re comfortable yet durable enough for everything from gym-based workouts, to Sunday strolls to the local cafe.

Other gym shorts recommendations

How we tested the best gym shorts

Our testers put each pair of shorts through their paces over at least a month. They wore them for a mixture of workouts. These ranged from strength work and HIIT sessions to cardio and cross training, with yoga and stretching sessions thrown in for good measure. They put them through multiple washes and tested them for fit, comfort, versatility, durability and coverage.

They also looked for shorts with good sustainability credentials as well as lightweight, stretchy and moisture-wicking fabrics. Additionally, extra features such as zipped storage, reversible waistbands and drawcord adjustability were taken into account too. And finally, they considered the range of sizes and colors, as well as style and suitability for wearing them outside the gym.

How to choose the best gym shorts for your workout

The best way to choose the right shorts for your workouts is to consider the type of exercise you do. What are the most important features that will help you perform better? Is flexibility of movement most important for your cross training? Is good breathability and moisture-wicking performance paramount for your HIIT and cardio sessions?

You might value support or coverage above all else. Or prefer a lighter, shorter short that you can also wear out on the track. Whatever your preference, you’ll find a short that’s ideal for you in the list above. Your budget will also play a part in your decision. But rest assured – they’re all high performance shorts made to move comfortably with you however intense your workout. And in our testers’ opinions they all offer excellent value for money.

What to look for when buying gym shorts

When purchasing gym shorts for men, several essential factors ensure comfort, functionality, and durability. Firstly, consider the fabric. Opt for moisture-wicking materials like polyester or spandex blends which effectively absorb sweat and keep you dry. These materials also provide flexibility, essential for a wide range of movements.

Secondly, pay attention to the fit. Gym shorts should offer a balance between snugness and freedom. Look for styles that provide ample room in the thigh region and have an elastic waistband with a drawstring for a secure yet adjustable fit. Length also plays a role; shorter shorts (5-7 inches inseam) offer better airflow and range of motion, while longer shorts provide more coverage and can be more comfortable for specific activities.

Additionally, consider features such as pockets, either zipped for security or open for convenience. Lining can also be a crucial factor; some gym shorts come with built-in liners for added support, while others do not. Lastly, look into the brand’s reputation and specific user reviews to gauge overall satisfaction regarding quality and longevity. By focusing on fabric, fit, length, features, and brand reliability, you can find the perfect gym shorts that enhance your performance and comfort.

Top on the list of the best sweatpants for men are the Under Armour Meridian Tapered Pants (buy now). While I was testing, I found the close, tapered fit of the Meridian to be one of the most flattering of any of the sweatpants I’ve ever tried. Its cuffs aren’t elasticated but I didn’t mind this, as the leg tapers naturally toward the ankle. This, combined with the super-soft and stretchy fabric, meant for all-day comfort, which I loved.

During a workout, I also found that the material wicked sweat away from my body and dried quickly. Because of this, I’d say the Meridian is suitable for intense gym or track sessions. I also appreciated the two zipped pockets too, which are handy for stashing valuables while training.

However, when I looked a little closer, I noticed the little details that make it stand out as one of the best pairs of sweatpants for men. These include the subtle anti-chafing knit patterns around the ankle, calf and knee, which soften the parts of the material that touched my legs the most as I moved.

Zipped pockets are a nice touch too, and although the Retake Knit is a little looser than I’d usually like, there’s no denying how comfortable these joggers feel – whether I’m in the gym or on the sofa.

 • Super soft and stretchy
 • Plenty of pockets
Cons
 • A bit heavy for rigorous workouts

On’s trademark is simple yet sophisticated style with subtle technical twists, so it’s no surprise these sweatpants have both style and substance. In my experience, there aren’t many sweats that can make the gym-casual crossover as effortlessly as these do. A combination of classic style and colours and impressive durability, storage and performance makes the On Sweatpants (buy now) a versatile choice.

I found the fit to be roomy but not over-baggy with classic tapered legs, cuffed above the ankle. That’s great for stopping the sweat rising up but sadly means you can’t whip them on without taking your training shoes off.

Durability also gets my thumbs-up. In my tests, that silky fabric stayed soft even after loads of trips through the wash.

6. Nathan 365 Joggers

Product shot of Nathan 365 jogger

Men’s Fitness verdict

For lounging around the house, you won’t find many better sweatpants or joggers. They are soft, stretchy and fast-drying, but, the material is quite thin so they’re not ideal for outdoor exercise.
Pros
 • ‘Ultra soft fabric’ is exactly that, and comfortable for lounging
 • Dry incredibly quickly
 • Good-sized pockets, plus a smaller zipped pocket
Cons
 • Material is stretchy but thin. Not suited to outdoor exercise
 • Tight-fitting crotch leaves little to the imagination
Materials88% polyester, 12% elastane
FeaturesTechnical knit; 4-way stretch waistband;
hand pockets; zipped coin pocket
SizesS – XXL

Reviewed by Isaac Williams

If you’re after some comfy sweats, these Nathan 365 Joggers (buy now) are as comfortable as they come. The brand describes the material as ‘ultra soft’, and they certainly live up to the billing. I’d go so far as saying they’re the comfiest joggers I’ve ever worn.

Wearing these around the house is a dream, but for anything much more active you should probably opt for thicker, more durable sweatpants, as I found the material on these to be quite thin. However, they do earn some practicality points for the deep side pockets and the added bonus of a smaller zipped pocket, which securely stored my valuables.

All in all, Nathan’s 365 Joggers are hard to beat if comfort is your number-one priority.

7. MP Rest Day Joggers

Product of MP Rest Day jogger

Men’s Fitness verdict

The term ‘joggers’ can be a bit of a misnomer and that’s the case with these sweats. They are supremely comfy and great for lounging but a bit too loose and heavy for anything too active.
Pros
 • Great cotton comfort
 • Good choice of colours
Cons
 • Pockets are shallow
 • Waistband doesn’t cinch very tightly
Materials66% cotton, 32% polyester, 2% viscose
FeaturesZip closure at hem; adjustable drawcord waistband;
welt pockets
Sizes2XS – 3XL

Reviewed by Isaac Williams

Described as ‘slim fit joggers’ on the MP site, these are actually of the loose and comfortable variety. In fairness, the clue is in the ‘Rest Day’ name, and while you’re not going to want to go for a run in them, for lazy days at home you won’t find many better.

In terms of the materials , 66% cotton is a big plus – generally speaking, more cotton equals more comfort – and while I was testing these, it was the comfort that was the standout factor here. Also, I tested the ‘Smoke Blue’ pair, which made a nice change from the usual grey or black colourways.

I did have a couple of gripes with the MP Rest Day joggers (buy now) – and whether minor or more significant depends on your own needs. Firstly, I found that the drawcord waistband doesn’t actually draw that tight. The counterpoint is that there are eight sizes available, so it should be easy enough to find a fit that doesn’t need too much tightening. However, if there is a little bit of wiggle room around the waist, pulling that cord tight isn’t quite as easy as it should be.

Secondly, and more importantly, I found the side pockets to be extremely shallow – to the extent that an iPhone only just about fits in. It’s a problem part rectified by the addition of zips to keep everything secure, but a bit more depth would provide some more peace of mind.

8. Gymshark Sport Joggers

Men’s Fitness verdict

Superbly stretchy and lightweight, these sweats offer maximum flexibility and freedom of movement, making them ideal for a range of drills – from light recovery runs to intense workouts.
Pros
 • Light, flexible and comfortable
 • Good versatility for training
Cons
 • Legs can rise up
 • More sporty than casual style
Materials92% polyester, 8% elastane
FeaturesZipped pockets, drawcord to waist,

Performance is at the heart of everything Gymshark does and its Sport Joggers (buy now) are no different. They’re tailor-made for dynamic or high intensity sessions. While testing, I found they offered plenty of give, stretch and breathability. Plus, their flattering, slimline fit felt super supportive, and the wide drawcord waistband kept my comfort at a premium.

I found them to be great for a wide range of drills, from jogging warm-ups to deep lunges and dynamic stretches. They’re also not too heavy for more intense sessions. I even managed some light recovery treadmill runs and am sure these will work a treat on cold winter runs, too.

Made from a shell-like, abrasion-resistant, four-way stretch fabric, these water-repellent and fast-drying sweats are perfect for outdoor workouts and warm-ups.
Pros
 • Water repellent
 • Plenty of pockets
Cons
 • Not as comfortable for lounging
 • Can be a bit toasty

However hard you train, you can depend on Lululemon’s abrasion-resistant and water-repellant joggers. These four-way stretch sweatpants are made from 100% recycled material too, enhancing their environmental credentials. There are also three zippered pockets, covering all your storage needs.

I found the classic tapered fit of the Lululemon License To Train Joggers (buy now) to be a little baggier than some skinnier sweatpants. That said, the cuffed ankles are narrow and quite seriously elasticated, which I found great for locking the legs nicely in place – although it does mean you can’t slip them on without taking your shoes off.

What to look for when buying sweatpants for men

When shopping for sweatpants, your perfect pair will largely depend on the type of training – or lounging – you’re planning on doing. For example, if you’re up for a sweaty session, finding sweatpants with sweat-wicking fabric and added breathability is a must. If you’re going for a run, you might want to look for sweatpants with zip-up pockets to hold your valuables.

Not sure which option is right for you? Check out our guide on the difference between sweatpants and joggers, which includes more handy buying advice.

It might sound silly, but the route to finding the best sweatpants for your gym session will depend on how much sweat your activity is likely to produce. A high-intensity, cardio-based class would benefit from a different style of sweatpants to a rest-filled visit to the weights room. Plus, wearing the wrong style could make a hot and hard workout even tougher.

Choosing the right fabric

For those sweatier sessions, you’re best looking for a pair of sweatpants that have a sweat-wicking fabric. You should also look for added breathability, and a bit of stretch. Most sweatpants in this category will be made of a synthetic material like polyester, but if you want to keep things natural, Merino wool is a good (if more premium-priced) alternative.

The humble jogger is fine for anything else (and can even double up for sofa-based Netflix binging sessions too), and most modern designs tend to come in a cotton and synthetic (nylon, polyester) blend.

Finding the right fit

The best cut and design of a pair of sweatpants fall on the same dividing lines as fabric choice. While not for everyone because of their skin-hugging nature, a tapered, tight-fitting pair of sweatpants is beneficial for sweaty gym sessions. This is because they are able to wick sweat away at the source rather than letting it pool on the skin. Plus, they won’t get in the way when running on a treadmill or in the saddle on a spin bike.

When your lower half isn’t being used for exercise or sweat isn’t an issue, then something baggier and free-flowing can often be more comfortable to work out in.

Additional features

Finally, it’s worth considering additional features when looking for the best sweatpants for the gym. A zip-up pocket is always handy for storing valuables like your phone and keys, while it’s worth opting for a drawstring closure over an elasticated waist if you want to truly be able to tailor the fit.

How we test the best sweatpants

Our team of reviewers are experienced testers of all manner of fitness kit. While testing out these sweatpants we were mainly looking at fit, comfort and style. We also paid close attention to the fabrics used and whether they offered specific sporty features like 360-degree stretch or moisture-wicking abilities, alongside any additional features, like pockets, drawstring waists and elasticated cuffs.

From strong-and-stable lifters to lighter trainers for HIIT workouts, here’s our pick of the best gym shoes on the market right now.

If you’re serious about the time you spend in the gym in 2024, a battered old pair of trainers just aren’t going to cut it. For dynamic, high-intensity movements, you need a pair of the best gym shoes for men that are lightweight and responsive and can handle quick changes of direction.

By contrast, heavy lifting – particularly squats and deadlifts – calls for a robust, flat-bottomed shoe that grips the ground and allows you to drive through your heels.

Then there are hybrid shoes – the jacks-of-all-trades – which offer stability, grip and lateral support. They may not excel at any one discipline but offer decent performance across the board.

To help you make the best decision for your workout needs, we’ve pulled together the following buyer’s guide, featuring the very best gym shoes for 2024.

The Reebok Nano X3 is a superb all-around gym shoe, and one of the the most versatile trainers on this list. It features excellent lateral support, plus good grip and traction from the shoe’s rubber outsole. In testing, I found that it could also handle multiple movements, as well as the strain put on it by heavy lifting, making it perfect for cross-training. Its heel has a good spring to it, and its breathable upper kept my feet from becoming too hot and stuffy.

If you’re looking for a quality all-rounder that can handle the variety of exercises included in a multi-format routine, this is one of the very best gym shoes for men.

Vivobarefoot does things a little differently: creating feet-shaped shoes, not shoe-shaped ones. The Motus Flex is the brand’s latest barely-there training shoe, with a flat base and minimal cushioning to allow your feet to move as nature intended.

The result is an excellent lifting shoe, with a stable base that allows you to stay stable and exert maximum force with compound lifts like squats and deadlifts. While its sister shoe, the Motus Strength, is marketed more towards strength training, I appreciate the ever-so-slightly bolstered outsole (0.5mm) of the Flex, and the two-part construction couples with the trademark wide toe box to give the feet even more freedom to grip, stretch and, well, flex.

It features a durable base, sock-like wrap-around upper and a thick, blocky midsole that provides plenty of support. I also found it to be a highly breathable shoe, with a layered mesh material that stopped my feet from getting too sweaty during intense workouts.

Designed to maximize ground contact while promoting natural motion, on test this shoe provided a good blend of stability and movement. I also liked the strong rubber build under the toe box, which offered a solid base and powerful floor grip – helpful during weight lifting and mixed workouts. The Nike Metcon 8 provides plenty of stability and support during heavy lifting. But I also found it was versatile enough to allow you to perform a more mixed set of exercises. In testing, its wide, thick heel provided a strong base for deadlifts and squats, giving the shoe a solid feel with plenty of protection.

The foam midsole gave a cushioned, springy base and the shoe’s rubber tread provided ample grip. Plus, the uppers are fairly light, creating a good balance between sturdiness, flexibility and responsiveness.

How we test the best gym shoes

Our testers have been busy putting a large number of gym shoes through their paces over the past year. The shoes featured in this list are there because our testers deem them to be the very best options for a wide range of gym-based workouts.

A good gym shoe can enhance your workout experience significantly by providing the right support, comfort, and durability. Here are some key factors our testers considered when rating their best gym shoes.

 1. Comfort and fit: Does the shoe fit well and is it comfortable to wear? This means there should be adequate room in the toe box, a secure fit around the heel, and enough arch support.
 2. Support and stability: Our testers looked for shoes that offer a stable base to prevent your feet from rolling in or out excessively. This is particularly important for weight lifting, running and fast-paced circuits.
 3. Cushioning: Depending on your workout, you’ll need varying levels of cushioning. Running and high-impact activities generally require more cushioning to absorb shock, whereas shoes for weight lifting should have a firmer, flatter sole.
 4. Breathability: Shoes with good ventilation will help keep your feet cool and dry, which can reduce the risk of blisters and other foot problems.
 5. Durability: The material and construction of the shoe should be durable enough to withstand regular use, especially if you’re engaging in high-intensity workouts.
 6. Traction: A good gym shoe should have a non-slip sole to provide adequate grip, which is essential for maintaining balance and preventing slips during exercises.
 7. Purpose-specific design: Some shoes are designed specifically for certain activities (e.g. running shoes, cross-trainers, weight lifting shoes), so it’s important you choose a shoe that suits the type of workouts you’ll be doing most often.

When trying on gym shoes, it’s a good idea to walk around in them and possibly do a few movements similar to those you’d perform at the gym to ensure they feel right.

What’s the difference between gym shoes and running shoes?

If your main goal at the gym is to pound the treadmill before maybe spending some time on the exercise mats, a classic running shoe will do the job. However, if your workouts extend beyond treadmill running, you’ll want to get more specific.

There are a few key differences between a gym shoe and a running shoe. Think about the type of action that a running shoe is made for: it supports forward-going, heel-to-toe movements, rather than lateral movement or upward propulsion. A higher heel-toe drop provides a running shoe with extra cushioning and shock absorption, protecting the runner’s joints and ligaments from injury.

Heel cushioning is particularly important, as is the use of lightweight mesh materials – a running shoe need to be light and breathable for those long, sweaty runs.

A gym shoe, however, is made with multidirectional and lateral movement in mind. Generally, it’ll have a lower heel-toe drop and a smaller cushion, which gives athletes a better range of motion. Typically, a wider toe box also helps to support quick directional changes.

How to make gym shoes last longer

Now you’re kitted out with some killer kicks, we’re sure you want to make them last as long as possible. While there is only so long a pair of gym shoes can last if you’re using them regularly, there are certain steps you can take to prolong their lifespan.

Firstly, to minimize the build-up of bacteria and odors, it’s always best to wear socks when exercising and to allow your shoes to dry out properly after sweaty sessions. We recommend leaving them outside in the sun to air dry, removing the insoles first if they are particularly damp. Steer clear of the radiator or tumble dryer: the heat can cause damage, warping and premature ageing.

Even with these precautions, it’s likely your shoes will need freshening up from time to time. However, you need to make sure you learn how to wash your gym shoes properly to avoid any damage (spoiler: don’t throw them in the washing machine).

Santa is no stranger to the gym, writes Jonny Wells. Back in 1996, Hulk Hogan appeared in the best-forgotten Santa with Muscles. Next year, Arnold Schwarzenegger will star as Father Christmas alongside Reacher’s Alan Ritchson in The Man with the Bag for Netflix. And this year, Red One introduces J.K. Simmons’ jolly-but-jacked take on Saint Nick, whose complex at the North Pole includes a luxury gym.

We’re introduced to the gym early in the film, when Simmons’ ‘Nick’ – decked out in merry red activewear and spotted by Dwayne Johnson – shoulder presses over 150kg. But he needs his strength. Every Christmas Eve, this Santa “burns over 430 million calories” so his gym must be up to snuff.

Red One production design

Red One production designer Bill Brzeski has worked on films in the Fast & Furious and Iron Man franchises. He’s built several cinematic gyms during his career, but never one in the North Pole. So, when the script came through, he and set decorator Danielle Herman knew they had a challenge on their hands.

“I didn’t want it to look like every gym you see out there,” Brzeski says. “I wanted the equipment to be as natural as possible, and the brands chosen were made with beautiful woods and leathers. They had a very alpine look. I love all those natural colours. Most weights just look the same, black cast iron and chrome.”

Almost every piece of gym equipment in Red One was sourced from Fysik, a bespoke brand founded in 2015 which has outfitted, among other places, the penthouse gym of the Burj Khalifa. Swedish trainer and brand co-founder Henrik Olofsson says the filmmakers largely deferred to Fysik’s judgement on the aesthetics of the equipment.

Bespoke gym equipment

“The walnut wood and dark brown leather was our suggestion,” says Olofsson, “and they trusted us to go with it. In the early email exchanges, they asked if we had a squat rack and weight plates. At the time, we didn’t, but I said we did! That meant late nights drafting designs to develop something workable. But the squat stand and weight plates have since become popular sellers!”

Almost the entire Fysik range appears in Red One, including the NANG adjustable gym bench, the LOMM pattern-stitched medicine balls and the KRABA kettlebells. But the KHUN stand, with fixed J-hooks and stainless steel frame, and the brushed-finish KLOM weight plates are undoubtedly the stars of the North Pole set.

“As for those 45lb plates J.K. Simmons is lifting,” adds Olofsson, “it’s probably no surprise that they weren’t real. Ultimately, we made them mostly of styrofoam with a thin layer of stainless steel, leather and wood veneer stickers.”

The gym also features its fair share of home comforts – necessary when you’re working out at minus 40 degrees Celsius. There’s a fire pit, a fluffy white armchair and pot upon pot of poinsettias. Brzeski says he included these elements to make the visual of a North Pole gym “less incongruous. It still had to function as a personal workout space”.

High-end machines

To that end, several exercise machines were also drafted in. The Ergatta Rower from Waterrower, handmade from dark American Cherry, fits the Nordic aesthetic and the Carbon bike from Ciclotte offers a visually striking spin on the classic exercise cycle. Both these machines and the Fysik equipment, Brzeski explains, were loaned to the production. “They had to be sent back after we were done. I think Dwayne Johnson bought a few pieces, but all of it had to be accounted for.”

“Another fun fact,” adds Fysik’s Olofsson, “is that since our products are modular, we’ve been able to remake and reuse many parts [of the equipment used in Red One] for future orders. That means many of our customers around the world now have Hollywood movie props in their own gyms – without even knowing it!”
