To help you put your best foot forward, we put a selection of the latest running shoes through their paces – here’s the cream of the crop.

These are the best running shoes you can buy

Running shoes mean different things to different people, but one thing our testers could all agree on was the Nike Vaporfly 3 is a fantastic shoe, and the best for fast runners. That doesn’t necessarily mean racers though; anyone looking to improve their running could benefit from Nike’s carbon super shoe. Whether that’s looking for pacier parkruns or chasing longer distance PBs, you’ll feel a better and faster runner in these shoes.

1. Nike Vaporfly 3

Product shot of a Nike Vapourfly 3 trainer

Men’s Fitness verdict

We’d have forgiven Nike for making a carbon copy of its excellent v2 super shoe. Instead it’s made refinements that may divide opinion but there’s no doubting the racing pedigree of the Vaporfly 3.
Pros
 • Light, punchy and energetic
 • Softer midsole for more protection
Cons
 • Lost some stiffness
 • Less secure fit
MaterialsZoomX foam; carbon fibre flyplate
Weight 6.9oz / 195g
ColorsWhite & particle grey / sail & orange

The Nike Vaporfly 3 maintains its lightweight design, combining a carbon plate with Nike ZoomX foam, but with notable changes. More ZoomX foam in the midsole, along with a redesigned heel and improved midfoot stability, enhance the shoe’s performance. The new Flyknit uppers are lighter and more breathable, while the outsole features a thinner rubber covering with a waffle design for improved grip.

It’s the lightest carbon shoe available, and despite retaining a 40mm/32mm stack height, it offers a more stable platform. In testing over 50 miles, including a marathon, it performed exceptionally well, providing cushioned protection but with a slightly softer ride compared to the Vaporfly 2. While it’s still agile and fun, offering better breathability, it sacrifices some race-focused responsiveness for versatility and comfort. Overall, the Vaporfly 3 is a great option for various distances, offering improved stability and protection.

2. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23

Product shot of a Brooks running shoe

Men’s Fitness verdict

If you’re an overpronator looking for a reliable stability shoe for mixed daily training, we can recommend the GTS 23. It’s not quite light or sprightly enough for regular high tempo efforts though.
Pros
 • Well balanced
 • GuardRail gives support to overpronators
 • Four widths to choose from
Cons
 • A little too heavy for pacey runs
Materials60% recycled materials
Weight286g / 10.1oz
ColorsPeacoat / green gecko / black & Hawaiian / black & ebony / blue

The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23 offers significant updates from its predecessor, focusing on stability and comfort. It replaces the old firm rubber insert with a guide rail around the midsole, promoting proper foot spreading and strengthening. This design aids overpronators by encouraging a more balanced push-off. The shoe’s balanced feel and subtle cushioning, especially under the forefoot, promote correct running form for various paces and distances.

Compared to the GTS 22, it features a slightly softer DNA LOFT v2 midsole and a wider forefoot for a plush yet responsive ride. Weighing just over 10oz, it’s suitable for everyday training, offering comfort and reliability. With approximately 60% recycled materials in the uppers and various width options, it’s a solid choice for stability-seeking runners, especially at its price point.

3. Brooks Ghost Max

Brooks Ghost Max shoes balanced on a yellow beam

Men’s Fitness verdict

The Ghost Max has real comfortable cruiser credentials with a consistent, stable ride, but there’s not quite enough pop when you want to pick up the pace.
Pros
 • Comfortable fit
 • Mild but well rockered ride
 • Good stability
Cons
 • Midsole foam is a little dull
 • Not one for tempo work
 • Could be lighter
MaterialsDNA Loft V2; 56.4% recycled uppers
Weight283.5g / 10oz
ColorsRed orange / crown blue / black / black & atomic blue

The Brooks Ghost Max, similar to the Ghost and Glycerin 20, offers a good blend of comfort and performance. Available in two width options, we found it suits narrow feet well, with ample space in the toe box and no heel slippage issues. Featuring a higher stack of DNA Loft v2 cushioning compared to the Ghost 15, it provides a stable and protective platform, enhanced by the GlideRoll Rocker for smooth transitions.

While we thought the cushioning may feel slightly dull compared to the Glycerin 20’s livelier foam, the Ghost Max excels in easy-paced runs, offering a smooth and consistent ride. However, it may lack responsiveness for faster runs. It offers reliable grip on various terrains, making it suitable for most runner’s needs.

4. ASICS Metaspeed Edge Paris

Men’s Fitness verdict

A lightweight running shoe for when you want to go faster, but its speedy counterpart the Metaspeed Sky Paris is the better of ASICS’ two racing shoes.
Pros
 • Bouncy, lively feeling at faster paces
 • Lightweight design
 • Offers good protection
Cons
 • Outsole may not be the most rugged
 • A touch firmer than the Metaspeed Sky Paris
 • Slightly unstable when legs tire
MaterialsMesh Motion Wrap 2.0 upper; PEBA-based FF Blast Turbo+ foam; ASICSGRIP rubber outsole
Weight179g / 6.3oz (UK men’s size 8)
ColorsOrange / safety yellow & black
Sizes2.5 – 12

The Metaspeed Edge Paris is up there with the Sky Paris in terms of ASICS’ lightweight offerings for pacey runners of all distances. Snug-fitting Mesh Motion Wrap 2.0 uppers, responsive FF Blast Turbo+ foam and minimal ASICSGRIP outsoles combine to make a snappy, sub-180g race shoe. Its scooped carbon plate gives a quite aggressively rockered ride, but there’s also a surprising amount of protection built in to stop your legs being battered by those longer efforts. If you’re a high-tempo cadence runner looking for a light but sprightly ride, the Edge Paris could be right up your street.

5. ASICS Novablast 4

Men’s Fitness verdict

A big improvement on its predecessors, with more responsiveness despite big cushioning. If you like maximal shoes with a softer edge you’ll likely enjoy this shoe.
Pros
 • Big, cushioned comfort
 • More responsive ride than the Novablast 3
Cons
 • A bit on the bulky side
 • Sometimes a bit too soft
MaterialsUpper made from at least 75% recycled materials; FF BLAST™ PLUS ECO cushioning made with 20% bio-based content
Sizes 6 – 15 (US)
Weight 266g / 9.4oz
Colors7 available

The ASICS Novablast 4 maintains its bulky appearance but introduces significant updates. Featuring FlyteFoam Blast + Eco midsole foam with recycled materials, it enhances stability and transitions with a more aggressive rocker. The engineered woven upper offers improved stretch and durability. The shoe’s design now includes higher side walls, an upward-sweeping toe box, and neoprene-like tongue wings for better foot wrap.

Despite a slightly increased weight from the previous model, it remains lighter than competitors like Gel Nimbus 25 and Brooks Ghost Max. Priced at £135 / $140, it maintains its cushioned comfort but feels firmer and more responsive, suitable for various paces. While still bulky, we felt the wider base enhances its stability. Overall, Novablast 4 is an upgrade, appealing to fans of maximal, cushioned shoes with added responsiveness.

6. New Balance Fresh Foam X More v4

New Balance Fresh Foam X More V4

Men’s Fitness verdict

The ultra-cushioned X More v4 ticks all the boxes as a daily mile-eater, but is too big, if not too heavy, for pacier sessions. A great choice for beginners though.
Pros
 • Surprisingly light feel, despite the midfoot cushioning
 • Ideal for building up distance while minimising impact on joints
Cons
 • Heavy cushioning will divide opinion
 • Narrow fit may cause rubbing
MaterialsFresh Foam X midsole; engineered mesh upper (made of 50% or more recycled materials)
Sizes 7-15 (US)
Weight 295g / 10.4oz
ColorsBlack & phantom / arctic grey & natural indigo / cobalt & black

The New Balance Fresh Foam X More v4 offers lightweight yet ample cushioning, ideal for entry-level runners aiming to increase their distances while reducing impact-related injuries. However, potential issues arise with its narrow fit and built-up midsole cushioning, causing discomfort and rubbing on the inside of the foot, especially for pronators.

While that may not affect all runners and provides extra protection for some, it obstructs natural gait for others. If you get the fit right and rubbing isn’t an issue, it excels in providing a comfortable ride for slow and steady miles, making it suitable for training sessions but less so for races due to its maximalist cushioning.

On Cloudsurfer 7 running shoe

7. On Cloudsurfer 7

Men’s Fitness verdict

The Cloudsurfer 7 is one of those rare beasts: a dedicated daily trainer than can handle harder, faster efforts too. It may be a bit pricier than its peers but that gets you great versatility.
Pros
 • Light and lively
 • Great versatility
 • Well balanced cushioning
Cons
 • A bit narrow across the midfoot
 • Squeaks when wet
MaterialsHelion™ superfoam midsole; rubber outsole
Weight 238g / 8.4oz
ColorsWhite frost / black / flame white / black cobalt / white sand

The On Cloudsurfer 7 is a top-tier daily trainer, offering a lightweight, comfortable and well-balanced ride suitable for various training efforts. A notable update lies in its revamped midsole featuring CloudTec Phase technology, which delivers softer landings and springier toe-offs. The shoe boasts a soft dual-layer mesh upper for excellent step-in comfort, although its narrow fit might pose issues for wider feet.

Despite its light weight, it maintains durability and reliable grip with a thin rubber outsole. Weighing 238g / 8.4oz, it competes favorably with similar trainers on the market. We tested it over 30-plus miles on various terrains, and were impressed with its responsive, stable and cushioned ride. Priced at £150 / $160, it offers great value for its versatility, making it suitable for both easy runs and faster efforts, ideal for runners seeking a dependable shoe for all types of training sessions.

Product shot of a Hoka Rocket X 2 running shoe

8. Hoka Rocket X 2

Men’s Fitness verdict

Its well-balanced ride makes this a versatile shoe for a range of speeds and distances. That it’s one of the cheapest super shoes going makes the Rocket X 2 even more compelling.
Pros
 • Springy and lively ride
 • Good versatility
 • Relatively stable for a carbon shoe
Cons
 • Very tight fit
 • Not as propulsive as some rivals
MaterialsTechnical synthetic mesh upper; carbon fibre plate
Weight221g / 7.8oz
ColorsCeramic / evening primrose

The Hoka Rocket X 2 features a race-ready design with a synthetic mesh upper, gusseted tongue and internal foot cage ensuring a secure fit. However, its narrow fit and tight entry may pose challenges for those with wide feet or high insteps. Once on, though, we felt it offers a comfortable and locked-in feel, providing excellent stability even during tight turns. The zonal outsole rubber reinforcements enhance grip and durability.

It’s one of the lightest carbon shoes, offering a compact, agile and nimble ride reminiscent of early Nike Vaporfly models. With a stack height of 36mm/31mm and a 5mm drop, it provides a subtle yet stable platform for running. We tested it over 50 miles and reckon it excels as a race shoe, offering a balanced, energetic and versatile performance suitable for various paces and distances.

9. Saucony Hurricane 24

Hand holding a white running shoe

Men’s Fitness verdict

A running shoe that goes big on comfort, making it a great choice for easy running when you’re not chasing times or other runners. That comfort will let you put in big miles too.
Pros
 • Great comfort for easy and recovery runs
 • Strong protection over longer runs
 • Subtle stability elements
Cons
 • I’d love it to be a bit lighter
 • Not made for faster running
 • Takes a few runs to soften up
MaterialsEngineered mesh upper, PWRRUNPB and PWRRUN foam
Weight316g / 11.1oz (UK men’s size 8)
ColorsBlack & carbon / black / navy / white / triple white / viziblue
Sizes6 – 15

If you look for plenty of width and support from a running shoe, the Hurricane 24 will be right up your street. Likewise, if you want a shoe for those low-tempo runs, or recovery sessions on tired legs – the Hurricane will have your back there too. Even if you’re not prone to pronation, Saucony’s mile muncher has plenty to offer, in terms of comfort, protection and stability. It’ll keep going the distance, even when you’re not sure your legs will. That combination of PWRRUNPB and PWRRUN foam offers a smooth, balanced ride in a package that we think is as enjoyable as it is durable.

10. New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v13

New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v13

Men’s Fitness verdict

It’s lighter than its predecessor, with more midsole foam, and although it delivers comfort in spades the 1080 v13 may have dug itself a hole in terms of versatility.
Pros
 • Big, cushioned comfort
 • Plush, padded uppers
Cons
 • Lacks a bit of energy
 • Not as versatile as some daily trainers
MaterialsFresh Foam X midsole; Ndurance rubber outsole
Weight260g / 9.2oz
ColorsMarine blue & night sky / black & white / black & blacktop /
grey matter & shadow grey / starlight & marine blue

Taking the trademark comfort of New Balance’s 1080 line and dialling it up even further, the Fresh Foam X 1080 v13 is the perfect choice for long, slow runs, in our opinion.

Naturally, the focus on big cushioning means anyone wanting to run light and fast will be better served elsewhere, but for anything at easy, conversational pace, we reckon you won’t find a more comfortable option than this.

11. Brooks Ghost 16

Men’s Fitness verdict

Brooks’ beginner-friendly, workhorse daily trainer gets new foam that makes it more likeable, yet doesn’t stray too far from that Ghost DNA so loyal fans will still want to lace up for daily runs.
Pros
 • Familiar stable and smooth Ghost ride
 • New foam offers plusher feeling underfoot
 • Can comfortably handle slow to moderate paces
Cons
 • Toe box feels a touch short
 • More versatile alternatives available
 • Isn’t much of a looker
MaterialsEngineered mesh upper; nitrogen-infused DNA Loft V3 foam; rubber and silica outsole
Weight280g / 9.9oz (UK men’s size 8)
Sizes6 – 14
ColorsSix colors available

The Brooks Ghost is now in its 16th iteration and these latest refinements make it more likeable than ever. The new DNA Loft V3 foam gives more bounce and plushness than its predecessor, which helped us go deeper into big-mile runs.

The Ghost has borrowed the RoadTack outsole tech from its stablemate the Glycerin 21, providing extra traction and promising longevity. Brooks has shaved a little weight of v15 too, creating an all-round better daily shoe for moderate-paced training miles.

12. Saucony Endorphin Pro 4

Men’s Fitness verdict

The Pro 4 is an ideal first carbon marathon shoe. It gives you something few carbon shoes offer – great comfort and speed over a range of distances. Only the Elite model pips it to the post.
Pros
 • Soft and comfortable upper
 • Impressive energy return
 • Good value entry-level carbon shoe
 • Blend of comfort and speed makes an ideal first marathon shoe
Cons
 • There are faster and lighter options available
 • Not ideal for shorter races
MaterialsFull carbon plate; PWRRUN PB/HG foam
ColorsBlack & white / vizi-orange
Sizes6-14
Heel-toe drop8mm (39.5mm/31.5mm)
Weight212g / 7.5oz

While the Saucony Endorphin Elite is an out-and-out long-distance race shoe, the similarly carbon-shod Pro 4 has more all-rounder potential. It hits the sweet spot between comfort and speed, with plenty of spring and energy return from the forefoot encouraging a high turnover.

Ultra-thin uppers give your feet plenty of breathability, adding to a respectable weight of just 212g / 7.5oz. If you’re looking for a shoe to encourage you to train for your first marathon, the Endorphin Pro 4 is a good value option we can easily recommend.

13. inov8 TrailFly G270 V2

Men’s Fitness verdict

How do you improve an award-winning trail shoe? Do what inov8 has done with its TrailFly G270 V2 and boost fit, comfort and durability while keeping the price competitive.
Pros
 • No-nonsense durability
 • Fantastic grip
 • Good for road-to-trail transitions
Cons
 • May be too form for some runners
 • Zero drop may not suit everyone

inov8 has improved an already impressive first-gen G270 by enhancing the fit, comfort and durability for this V2 model. All the things that made the G270 a great trail shoe are still here. Graphene-enhanced G-GRIP lugs, PowerFlow Max foam, Boomerang insole and zero-drop design are rolled over from the original. But we’ll testify to the fact that it’s even more agile and responsive than before.

14. Merrell Agility Peak 5

Product shot of Merrell off-road shoes

Men’s Fitness verdict

With the Agility Peak 5, Merrell has shown it can do much more than just hiking shoes. This impressive daily trail shoe puts it right on the trail running map.
Pros
 • Good versatile all-rounder
 • Excellent grip
 • Plush long-run comfort
Cons
 • Some heel slipping
 • Higher stack limits ground feel

If you think Merrell only produces functional outdoor leisurewear, think again. The Agility Peak 5 trail shoe shows the company is upping its performance footwear game too. Substantial 5mm Vibram lugs, an energetic medium-density FloatPro foam, engineered mesh uppers with TPU overlays and a useful rock plate are just some of the Peak 5’s highlights. We’re also big fans of the gusseted wrap-around tongue, which prevents lace pinch.

15. Altra Outroad 2

Product shot of an Altra Outroad 2 running shoe

Men’s Fitness verdict

It may not be the most nimble or responsive trainer, but the Outroad 2 combines a stable platform, deep cushioning and decent grip for those slower training miles that take you off the beaten track.
Pros
 • Roomy toe box
 • Wide platform to run off
 • Plush uppers
Cons
 • Not very agile
 • Quite firm underfoot
MaterialsAltra EGO™ midsole; MaxTrak™ outsole
Weight286g / 10.6oz
Colors Grey & green / blue & yellow / red & black / neon & blue

A wide platform, zero-drop design and roomy toebox are standout features to us on the Altra Outroad 2. If you’re after a plush road-to-trail runner and aren’t too concerned with out-and-out speed or agility, the Outroad 2 will keep you cruising in comfort.

We found it offered good grip on a range of surfaces, alongside a lightweight feel and balanced cushioning, thanks to that 27mm EGO midsole foam. Overall, it’s a real mile-muncher at a decent price.

16. Salomon S/Lab Genesis

Men’s Fitness verdict

The Salomon S/Lab Genesis is a dependable all-round trail shoe. It’s solid, stable and comfortable, but not suited to the sort of extreme mud you find on some cross-country courses.
Pros
 • Great ground feedback and surface engagement
 • Ideal for long and easy mixed-terrain trail runs
 • Comfortable to wear on and off the trails
 • Hard wearing and durable
Cons
 • Not a PB-setting shoe due to lack of propulsion and bounce
 • 4.5mm lugs struggle in really muddy conditions
 • Not suited to highly technical trails
MaterialsMatryx mesh; EnergyFOAM midsole; Contragrip outsole
Weight269g / 9.5oz
Color Black, white & blue danube

The Salomon S/Lab Genesis is a trail shoe that can take you miles off the beaten path, with a rugged Kevlar-infused construction that’ll protect your feet on day-long adventures. There’s a lightweight, highly breathable Matryx mesh upper, responsive EnergyFOAM midsole and a lugged Contragrip outsole for coping with the toughest conditions the trail can throw at you.

This may not be the shoe for setting trail-running PBs, but it will be one that propels you towards the horizon when other off-road shoes would have you heading for home.

How we test running shoes

Our testers put each shoe through their paces over a mixture of distances and paces to see where they excel, and clocked up significant distances in each one to examine how they wear over time. Each reviewer focused on speed, stability and comfort during test runs, while also assessing the effectiveness of any high-tech features on offer. Their detailed reviews are sure to help you choose the right running shoe for you.

How to find the right running shoe for you

Every runner’s biochemistry is unique, which means certain shoes will be perfect for some and terrible for others. That said, there are three key things everyone needs to consider when trainer shopping.

 • Firstly, the shoe should fit your foot snugly, without having to do the laces up tight.
 • Secondly, the shoe should naturally flow with your stride (and make you want to run faster).
 • Finally, the shoe should fit your running mechanics, meaning if you start to feel irritation in areas that have bothered you in the past, that’s a sign you’re not wearing the right pair.

When is the best time to run?

A new study from sportsshoes.com has revealed that 7pm on a Sunday – in April or October, to be specific – is the most popular time for smashing PBs. The research looked at the time that 35,000 social media users posted PB photos, using over 15 hashtags relating to personal bests, and cross-referenced the posts with the fitness activities they depicted to reveal the most successful times.

What to look for in the best running shoe, according to the experts

We talked to athletes and coaches about what to consider when buying a pair of running shoes. HYROX master trainer and 247 Represent head coach and athlete Jake Dearden and New Balance athlete and online running coach Jonny Mellor give us their opinions:

How do I make sure I get the correct size?

Jake Dearden: I’d recommend buying half a size up when it comes to running trainers. This is to avoid blisters, especially if your feet swell up on longer runs which is due to the increased blood flow.

Jonny Mellor: A properly fitted running shoe should feel snug in the heel and midfoot, with some room for toe movement. To check proper length when standing you should allow a full thumb width of space between the end of your toes and front of the shoe. This is why often runners are recommended to purchase half a size bigger than a normal every-day shoe. However it’s not always the case, depending on the brand, so it is a good idea to get your feet properly measured by a running specialist store.

What are neutral or supportive shoes? Is more cushioning better?

JD: Neutral shoes are designed for runners with average sized arches and provide a normal amount of support to your foot. Stability shoes are designed for runners with low arches that cause their feet to excessively roll inward with each stride (called ‘overpronation’). I’d suggest getting assessed by a qualified physio and ask them what type of shoe you need. Most of the time you’ll need a neutral shoe paired up with some lower body mobility and stability exercises to improve your running form. More cushion isn’t always better as for some people it can make your stride more inefficient.

Getting your gait analysed is a good way to help you find the right type of shoe

JM: In terms of more cushioning, this will depend on the individual runner and what type of running you’re planning on doing. Some runners prefer a faster, more responsive feel underfoot over more cushioning. This is personally why I love the New Balance 1080 v13 as it feels really soft and cushioned but still feels fast and responsive. If you’re doing lots of miles on the roads or pavement, then you may benefit from a more cushioned running trainer.

Do I need to worry about a shoe’s stack height, drop and weight?

JD: If you are starting out running I wouldn’t worry too much about those features, and try to focus on how your shoe is allowing you to run and if you’re comfortable when doing so. Finding the right pair of running shoes mainly comes down to what you feel most comfortable running in.

However, if you are struggling to find ones that work for you it can be worth looking into those features. Trainers with a bigger stack height are more cushioned, helping absorb the impact from running and therefore being easier on your joints. With a lower heel drop you are encouraging a more natural running pattern as it is closer to you being barefoot, the most natural gait form, which will promote midfoot landing as opposed to heel striking which is a more inefficient running technique. If you struggle with knee pain, lower heel drop shoes are often more comfortable and vice versa if you struggle with Achilles issues.

The weight of a shoe is important if you are focusing on speed work. I would always focus on technique and your running form and the other elements of a shoe that allow you to be as efficient as possible before looking into shoe weight.

JM: Again, this will come down to personal preference and what you’ve ran in previously and feel most comfortable running in. It will also depend on your running style, history of injuries and what surface you plan on running on. Runners traditionally go for a lighter shoe for race day or interval work to feel faster and more responsive.

These are the best running shorts I tested

The inov8 Race Elite 5-Inch Short are the best pair of running shorts I’ve tested. They offer race-ready performance with a lightweight feel and ample coverage, making them suitable for both training and gym workouts. Enhanced comfort is provided by perforated panels and silky soft boxer liners, while a wide waistband ensures stability.

Other running shorts recommendations

Best 3-inch running shortsThe Satisfy Rippy 3-inch Trail Shorts are the best 3-inch shorts for track performance, offering premium features like Ripstop fabric for breathability and quick-drying. Despite the high price, they boast four pockets, including two hooded drop-ins and a rear zippered phone pocket. Opt for the bold Leopard print if you’re brave enough.
Best 7-inch running shortsIf you prefer a longer pair of shorts, On’s Lightweight 7-Inch Shorts are an excellent option. They offer unparalleled freedom of movement, with an athletic cut and increased breathability from the perforated back. Despite their thinness, the material feels both soft and robust.

1. inov8 Race Elite 5-Inch Short

Lower torso shot of a main wearing running shorts

Men’s Fitness verdict

These lightweight shorts offer excellent airflow and cooling with perforated panels. They feature silky-soft liners, a comfortable waistband and limited but functional storage.
Pros
 • Lightweight and comfortable
 • Good airflow and cooling
 • Chafe-reducing liners
Cons
 • Storage could be better
 • Potential fit issues
 • Only two colors
MaterialsRecycled polyester; elastane
DetailsIntegrated boxer liner; rear zipped pocket with key loop
SizesXS – XL
ColorsBlack / navy

The inov8 Race Elite 5-inch certainly feels race-ready, but it’s also a useful choice for logging training miles or even nailing leg drills in the gym. On test, I found that they struck an ideal balance between that lightweight, barely-there feel and confident coverage. The inov8 5-inch short is just right for ensuring confidence over big-mileage runs.

I also found that the perforated panels kept the air flowing and sweat dissipating, while silky soft boxer liners with flat seams enhanced comfort. A soft, wide waistband resists rolling and reduces pressure. It’s a little light on storage for me, but there’s enough room for a large smartphone or a fistful of gels – as well as a key loop.

2. Satisfy Rippy 3-Inch Trail Short

 • Excellent storage
 • High comfort and flexibility
 • Premium design
Cons
 • High price
 • Limited color options
Materials100% polyamide
DetailsBack zipper pocket with two pouches; two hip pockets; phone pocket; carabiner
SizesXS – XL
ColorsVetiver / indigo batik / leopard / black

The premium Satisfy Rippy Short offers a minimalistic race feel and some superb technical features for stellar performance on the track. If you can stomach the stratospheric price tag, you’re onto a winner.

I found them to be light, breathable, comfortable, and impressively quick-drying shorts thanks to the durable Ripstop fabric. Surprisingly for a 3-inch short, there’s also a useful array of four pockets. That includes two hooded drop-in pockets that can hold up to six gels and a rear zippered sweatproof phone pocket.

If you’re brave enough to shell out more than $200 for a pair, you may as well go all-in and get the bold Leopard print.

3. On Lightweight 7-Inch Short

Product shot of running shorts

Men’s Fitness verdict

Ultra-light at 150g, with a perforated back for breathability. They offer a soft, stretchy, robust material, an athletic fit, and secure storage, ideal for long distances and mixed terrain.
Pros
 • Very light
 • Highly breathable
 • Comfortable fit
Cons
 • No traditional drawstring
 • Unusual pocket placement
 • Pockets are without zips
MaterialsFront polyamide and elastane; rear polyester; inner polyester and elastane
DetailsAthletic fit; waistband pull loop; rear pocket; key loop
SizesSmall – 2XL
ColorsBlack / cerulean / glacier / niagara / twilight

On’s ultralight 7-inch shorts have an athletic cut which gave me plenty of freedom to move while testing. I also appreciated the perforated back which increased airflow and breathability.

The quality of the shorts was immediately obvious, despite the incredibly light and thin material. The fabric is soft and stretchy but feels comfortable and reassuringly robust.

The On Running Lightweight Shorts have that barely-there feel, even on long runs or over mixed terrain. That’s unusual for 7-inch shorts, but these are the most comfortable on test to wear in hot or humid conditions. Though seriously light, they’re not lacking in features. Though if you need more than one pocket you might have to look elsewhere.

4. SUDU SRS 01 Run Shorts

Men’s Fitness verdict

These shorts offer comfort, flexibility and decent storage, suitable for various activities – not just running. Tight sizing should be noted though.
Pros
 • Comfortable, with good freedom of movement
 • Suitable for running and general workouts
 • Effective moisture management
Cons
 • Tight sizing
 • Leg cuffs roll up occasionally
Materials89% polyester; 11% spandex
DetailsMesh undershorts; elastic waistband; reflective branding
SizesXS – 2XL
ColorsBlack & light blue / dark blue & pink / grey & yellow

SUDU’s SRS 01 Run Shorts blend comfort and functionality, featuring lightweight fabric and thoughtful storage. Overall, I think they’re a solid choice for versatile running and general workouts, offering durability and comfort at a competitive price.

Whether for long runs or gym sessions, they provide reliability and performance, making them a worthy investment for regular runners seeking quality gear. However, snug sizing and occasional leg cuff rolling should be noted.

5. adidas Adizero Control Running Short Tights

Kieran Alger wearing the adidas Adizero Control Running Short Tights

Men’s Fitness verdict

These high-tech shorts offer a locked-in feel with reactive polymer stripes to support muscles. Ideal for fast sessions, they provide warmth, but may feel restrictive and hot in summer.
Pros
 • Muscle support thanks to the reactive polymer
 • Comfortable fit
Cons
 • Potential overheating
 • Restrictive on long runs
 • Chunky seams
Materials83% recycled polyester; 17% elastane doubleknit
DetailsAEROREADY and RHEON technologies; stretch waist; reflective details
SizesXS – 3XL
ColorLegend ink

I found that for shorter, faster sessions and intervals on the track, these shorts were great. But it’s almost impossible to say whether they improved my efficiency. During some test sessions I hit my interval splits; during others I didn’t.

But if you’re after a pair of running shorts with a second-skin, locked-in feel, these are excellent at keeping everything supported and in place. And you’ll at least feel like you’re an Olympian – even if you need more than the advertised marginal gains here to get anywhere near that.

6. Lululemon License To Train Lined 7-Inch Short

Product shot of Lululemon shorts

Men’s Fitness verdict

Heavy-duty protection with a secure, elastic waistband and plenty of pockets. The stretchy inner lining and lightweight outer layer provide comfort and range of movement.
Pros
 • Durable design
 • Ample storage
 • Comfortable fit
Cons
 • Inner lining sits very close to the knee
 • Heavy waistband
MaterialsLycra™; Luxtreme™
DetailsQuick-dry mesh waistband; draw-cord; secure pockets; 2.5-inch split outer seam; abrasion-resistant
SizesXS – 2XL
Colors8 colors available

Lululemon’s License to Train Lined 7-inch Shorts are heavy duty but stay comfortable for long periods. From my own experience, I think they’d work equally well out on a hiking trail as they would in the gym.

I found the Lycra/Luxtreme lining to be close-fitting, acting like a pair of compression tights. The outer layer also felt soft and well-constructed on test. This robustness means they’re not the lightest 7-inch option, but they are one of the most versatile.

The shorts are packed with features, too, including a reversible draw-cord waistband, secret elasticated pocket and split outer seam, which gave me a good range of movement while testing.

7. Satisfy TechSilk 5-Inch Short

Satisfy TechSilk 5-Inch Short

Men’s Fitness verdict

These shorts blend high-end style with performance, using lightweight silk fabric and premium features like bonded seams and ample storage. The price will prove a major sticking point, though.
Pros
 • Lightweight and comfortable
 • Minimal chafe risk
 • Excellent storage
Cons
 • High price
 • Less bold color options than the 3-inch alternative
Materials88% polyamide; 12% elastane
DetailsUV protection; 4 pockets; carabiner for keys; double waistband; reflective print
SizesXS – XL
ColorsBlack / fossil

If you need a short that can swallow your day’s trail running essentials, look no further than Satisfy (just don’t look at its prices). Its TechSilk 5-inch short has two hand pockets as well as two interior sweatproof ones for phones and other valuables. A strong but soft technical two-way stretch silk fabric helps cut weight to just 4.2oz / 120g, but it still incorporates a hybrid inner design with a silky boxer-style brief, making them extra comfy to wear.

I found the sweat-wicking and drying to be top-drawer, making these a good choice for hot, sweaty summer runs. All its technical details, premium materials and stylish flourishes mean a hefty price tag, but if you invest in a pair you’ll reap huge comfort and performance benefits.

8. Brooks Sherpa 5-Inch 2-in-1 Short

Mid-torso close-up of a man wearing running shorts

Men’s Fitness verdict

Versatility with a hybrid design, combining lightweight comfort with ample storage. However, items may not sit securely in open pockets during vigorous movement.
Pros
 • Hybrid twin trail short design offers coverage and comfort
 • Comfortable fit
Cons
 • Items might not sit securely in open pockets
Materials79% recycled materials
DetailsIntegrated boxer liner; flat waistband; 4-way stretch fabric; 3 pockets with key loop
SizesXS – 2XL
Colors10 available

A longer, 5-inch version of Brooks’ classic race-fit Sherpa 3-inch split short, it pairs the same silky, lightweight four-way stretchy shell outer with a perforated inner short, with both giving extra coverage lower down your leg.

Its soft, sweat-wicking liner has flat, chafe-free seams and countless perforations, making them the coolest and comfiest shorts I tested. Two large drop-in mesh pockets handle most storage needs, while a wide, soft waistband won’t roll or cinch at your waist.

Which length of running shorts should you wear?

Running shorts tend to be categorized by their inseam length – usually 3, 5 or 7 inches. Choosing your ideal length depends on the kind of running you intend to do. For competitive running, sprint sessions or long-distance training you can’t beat the barely-there feel of 3-inch shorts. Their split seams allow the most freedom of movement and the best ventilation but might not be the wisest choice for post-run cafe stops.

For mixed sessions, trail runs or day-long excursions where you want to carry essentials, consider 5 or 7 inches. 5-inch shorts tend to combine the benefits of a lightweight race cut with good flexibility of movement, as well as sensible storage options and improved coverage. While 7 inches offers the best coverage and storage options, although they are the heaviest.

Whatever shorts you choose for running, there are some details that the best running shorts all have in common:

What to consider when choosing the best running shorts

 • Flexible movement
 • Neither too tight or too loose
 • Made from comfortable material
 • Flat, chafe-free seams
 • Good ventilation
 • Quick drying and moisture-wicking
 • Storage for gels, keys, cards or phone

What the experts look for in the best running shorts

We talked to athletes and coaches about what they look for in a good pair of running shorts. Jake Dearden, HYROX master trainer and 247 Represent head coach and athlete, says: “I like a 5-inch short with a skin layer underneath. This prevents the legs chafing but is cool enough to not overheat.

“The back, just below the waistband, needs to be big enough for a mobile phone for when you’re out for a run and don’t want to have to carry it or have anything else round your chest or arm to hold it.

“Waistbands need to have draw strings so they’re adjustable. The liner needs to be comfortable and ideally stop chafing (like a 2-in-1 short). It needs to be long enough so your thighs don’t rub together. You can always wear chafing cream to prevent that.”

Jonny Mellor, New Balance athlete and online running coach, adds: “It’s important to choose shorts that offer fast drying technology such as NB DRYx to wick moisture away from your body. If I’m doing a long run and carrying gels the New Balance half tights offer pockets on both sides, which are perfect for carrying gels. They also have a zipper pocket perfect for carrying a car key. For easy day-to-day running I prefer to wear something a little more loose fitting and lightweight.

“If you want to carry gels then the half tights are perfect; if it’s just a set of keys then shorts with a zipped pocket are important. Personally I prefer that to be at the back of the short as I don’t notice it jiggling around. But again it will come down to personal preference, and you may prefer to use a running belt instead.”

The post Get your cardio fix at home with one of the best rowing machines appeared first on Men's Fitness.

]]>
Whether you want to gamify your endurance sessions or cram in valuable cardio, these are the best rowing machines you can buy.

Until recently rowing machines were seen as the reserve of the commercial gym or fitness studio. But advances in tech have made them lighter, (a little) more compact and (almost) affordable. Those serious about upping their cardio game at home can now realistically consider investing in one of the best rowing machines. That way they can get their rowing fix whenever they like.

We’ve tested and reviewed the best rowing machines on the market to help find the right rower for you.

Why you can trust Men’s Fitness

At Men’s Fitness we pride ourselves on delivering information that serves a singular purpose: to improve some aspect of your health, fitness or wellbeing. For over 16 years, we’ve been publishing authoritative health and fitness content – written by our expert editors and contributors. Each of our workouts has been created and tested by either a highly experienced editor or expert contributor. Find out more about how we test.

What is the best rowing machine?

Having sampled a wide selection of many of the top choices in this market segment, MF’s team of product reviewers came to the conclusion that the NordicTrack RW900 is the best rowing machine on the market right now. It’s smooth, quiet, and (reasonably) comfortable in operation, and it’s far from basic too. Its large touchscreen isn’t just for show – within it, you’ll find a deep library of training classes and workouts, and there’s a degree of personalization to reflect your progress too.

The only major downsides are that it’s got quite a large footprint, so may be difficult to store, and it’ll leave an even larger dent in your bank balance. However, if you’ve got ample room indoors and enough budget to justify the cost, you can’t do better.

Other recommendations

Best for workout motivation

The Aviron Strong Series Rower not only comes with a library of trainer-led workouts, but also a whole range of streaming service options. Membership fees will add up, but at least you’ll never have a boring workout ever again.

Best for indoor storage

The WaterRower Original Series machine looks unlike any other rowing machine thanks to its wooden design, which in the eyes of some, might also give it additional aesthetic appeal for your home gym. Plus, its comparatively compact nature means it takes up slightly less room than some of the other machines on this list.

1. NordicTrack RW900 Rower

Nordic Track RW900 rower review

Men’s Fitness verdict

The smooth and comfortable ride of the NordicTrack makes for an enjoyable rowing simulation. It’s a great low-impact cardio choice if you have the space and will make the most of the subscription.
Pros
 • Exquisite design and quiet running
 • Large touchscreen with great speakers
 • Huge library of trainer-led workouts
 • Workouts geared to your progression
Cons

Dimensions82 x 22 x 52in / 208 x 55.8 x 132.1cm

You’ll see the RW900 in plenty of commercial fitness spaces, due to its premium design and ultra-quiet running. Its impressive 10-year frame guarantee means it’s a worthwhile home investment too, if you can find the cash – it’s $1,999 (plus $39 / £34 per month membership) – and the space.

We liked the tilting touchscreen, which gives you access to loads of premium membership content, and SmartAdjust machine learning technology means every workout is tailored to suit you. With the RW900, smart training just got a whole lot smarter.

2. Aviron Strong Series Rower

The Aviron is great at gamifying your sweat sessions and with access to a host of streaming services on its bright 22in touchscreen, your workouts will be anything but boring.
Pros
 • Great for beginners
 • Easy to stand and store
 • Low-decibel resistance mechanisms
 • Membership includes Amazon Prime, YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and YouTube access
Cons
 • Expensive with optional membership fees

The Aviron Strong’s dual air and magnetic resistance gives plenty of scope for fine tuning your workout and offers an authentic rowing experience. Plus, we found that its Whisper nylon belt keeps noise to a minimum too.

At $24 per month, membership is reasonably priced and gives you access not only to coached, guided and structured programmes on multiple profiles, but to Netflix, Disney+ and Spotify streaming platforms, among others. As you can imagine, this kept us suitably entertained as we rowed.

3. WaterRower Original Series

waterrower original series

Men’s Fitness verdict

We instantly loved the WaterRower’s unique design, and its operation is a smooth and fluid as it looks. There’s no large display or touchscreen though – but the experience is as authentic as it gets.
Pros
 • Unique design
 • Natural, fluid movement
 • Easy to store
 • Choice of wood finishes
Cons
 • Low seat and steep angled foot position
 • High price with costly additions

Dimensions82.3 x 20.9 x 22in / 209 x 53 x 56cm
ConnectivityOptional Bluetooth Commodule
Warranty5-year frame, 3-year parts

The WaterRower is a rowing machine unlike any other, using a unique water flywheel to provide a smooth, realistic and immersive rowing experience. While testing, we found the standard monitor to be fairly basic but there are plenty of upgrades available to give you Bluetooth connectivity or to allow you to use your own tablet or laptop to enjoy third-party rowing apps.

It has a stunning design that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home or swanky penthouse and there are a number of high-end wooden finishes to choose from.

4. Hydrow Wave Rower

Product shot of Hydrow Wave rowing machine

Men’s Fitness verdict

It’s a smooth, sleek and compact rower bursting with features, but the screen and audio don’t quite match up to the original Hydrow. As the company just makes rowers the subscription seems pricey too.
Pros
 • Cheaper than the original
 • Compact design
 • Smooth and quiet operation
 • Engaging classes and instructors
Cons
 • Screen can be tricky to operate
 • Built-in speakers could be better
 • Bluetooth audio delay
Display16in touchscreen
Dimensions80.3 x 19.3 x 43.3in / 204 x 49 x 110cm
ConnectivityBluetooth
Warranty1 year

Smaller and cheaper than the OG Hydrow, the new Wave has a sleek, stylish and minimal brushed aluminium design. There are a number of custom colours available too, so it can make a design statement in any living room.

The Hydrow Wave features a 16in touchscreen which gives you access to plenty of engaging live classes and on-demand content for a completely connected fitness experience. Overall, for us, this is one of the most realistic and authentic rowing experiences on the market.

How we tested the best rowing machines

Our experienced product testers tested each rowing machine in their own homes for at least a month. They tested each machine as a standalone rowing experience throughout its entire damper setting range and explored each machine’s connectivity and media options and subscription and app offerings.

Our testers were also making notes on durability, ease of use and storage. They marked each rowing machine for its design, features and suitability for a home gym setup before giving them an overall score to rank them in our best rowing machine buyers guide.

What to look for when buying a rowing machine

If you’re in the market for a rower, there’s now a surprisingly wide range of options to chose from. From top-of-the-range $2K-plus machines with large touchscreens with gamification and virtual rowing options to simple sub-$1K models that look less like spaceships and offer a more streamlined experience, there’s a rowing machine for most budgets.

Most use air or magnetic resistance from an adjustable flywheel for you to pull against. Others, like the WaterRower Original, use water as a resistance medium. They tend to have chain or belt-drive mechanisms attached to the ‘oar’ handle, and a movable seat on wheels or rails.

Those with larger displays or digital touchscreens will often require a membership subscription to unlock on-demand classes, games and virtual rowing options, so make sure you factor that monthly expense in when making your decision.

Benefits of using rowing machines

Indoor rowing, like indoor cycling, has a major advantage over treadmills in that it provides a zero-impact cardio workout. It can burn a serious amount of calories too, allowing you to torch more than 300 in just 30 minutes – once you’re clued up on how to use rowing machines effectively.

It offers a higher oxygen consumption and at a lower heart rate than treadmill workouts. Oh, and it’s also one of the few forms of cardio that packs on serious muscle.

If you have the room and the budget, the best rowing machines provide an effective endurance workout to improve heart and lung function while working every major muscle in your body. The drive phase engages your leg muscles, then your core and finally your upper body.

Other benefits include improving joint health, mobility and flexibility and core strength. With all their available metrics, rowing machines are great tools for goal-setting too.

The post We test the best exercise bikes for getting your cardio fix at home appeared first on Men's Fitness.

]]>
For an engaging indoor home cycling experience, we recommend saddling up on one of the best exercise bikes.

Exercise bikes have really come into their own over the past few years. Not only are fitness enthusiasts turning to them when it’s too cold, dark or wet outside; they’re also realizing they are useful tools for getting in regular, measured training.

On a traditional bike you have less time or opportunity to assess your workout. On the road there’s traffic to contend with; off-road there’s changing, technical terrain to tackle. So you’re less able to monitor whether you’re riding in a certain heart rate zone, or at a particular power output or revs per minute etc.

It’s also difficult to get your interval sessions in when you’re stopping at traffic lights or riding on rolling off-road terrain.

Exercise bikes allow you to dictate your workout. They provide a platform for more measured efforts than cycling outdoors. But unlike previous iterations, they also offer an immersive experience, with the aid of virtual rides or exercise classes on demand. It may not beat the feeling of real riding but with features like incline and road surface replication, the best exercise bikes come pretty close.

Why you can trust Men’s Fitness

We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Our team of exercise bike testers included experienced product testers, PTs and fitness writers – as well as the core MF team – who know exactly what sets the best products apart from the rest. Find out more about how we test.

These are the best exercise bikes we’ve tested

Packed with smart features and brimming with key insights, the Wattbike Atom is one of the most powerful home training tools you can buy. If you can stomach the initial cost, you’ll have a valuable fitness investment that we think it’s impossible to get tired of.

Other exercise bike recommendations

Best for realismGiving the Wattbike Atom a run for its money, the Garmin TACX Neo Bike Plus provides an equally authentic ride experience. We’re big fans of the road replication feature, where a bottom bracket motor vibrates to give the feel of cobbles or gravel.
Best for dynamic workoutsEven with immersive content, most exercise bikes provide fairly static experiences. Not the Bowflex VeloCore, which tilts on its axis to replicate the feeling of cornering and targets your core and arms as well as your legs.
Best air bikeThe OG of air bikes, there’s a reason why you’ll see an AssaultBike Classic in most gyms. A robust and reliable way to torch calories, its low maintenance and aftermarket accessories have helped it become an industry standard.

1. Wattbike Atom

Product shot of an indoor exercise bikeMen's Fitness editor's choice badge

Men’s Fitness verdict

Although it’s a big investment, if cycling is your go-to and you’re not a fan of turbo trainers, this is one of the best bikes you can get – and the closest to replicating the feeling of real riding.
Pros
 • Easy set-up
 • Genuine real-ride feel
 • Smart resistance mode is a handy automatic gear change option
 • A wealth of insights on the Wattbike Hub
Cons
 • Noisy
 • Feels geared more towards experienced cyclists than beginners

There’s a reason the Wattbike Atom has become the number one exercise bike in public gyms and elite-level fitness spaces alike. It’s the perfect machine to make the most of the Hub’s wealth of workouts and training plans. Use the Hub’s pedal efficiency score to hone your technique or replicate some of the toughest climbs on the pro racing circuit.

The bike itself is super-sturdy and will last years of abuse, yet is precise enough to read your crank position 1,000 times a second to ensure exact shifting. You can go from using the 22 integrated gears in manual mode to ‘ergo’ mode, which automatically selects your gear to suit the gradient or power requirement – at the push of a button. OK, so you need to bring your own screen to the party, but the Wattbike has everything else you need to take your cycling to the next level.

2. Garmin TACX Neo Bike Plus

The Garmin TACX Neo Bike Plus smart bike

Men’s Fitness verdict

Highly adjustable and hugely enjoyable, the Garmin TACX Neo Bike Plus is the pinnacle of exercise bikes and offers a realistic, immersive riding experience.
Pros
 • Excellent app compatability
 • Immersive real-road feel
 • Highly controllable fans
Cons
 • Some flex in the drop bars

The days of exercise bikes being divorced from the real-world cycling experience are long gone. Garmin is changing the game with the TACX Neo Bike Plus, which has a built-in motor to replicate the ‘rumble’ of riding on different road surfaces, including cobbles and gravel, as well as resistance to mimic climbs of up to 25%.

Its programmable shifters can be made to behave like Shimano, SRAM or Campagnolo ones, and although there’s a build-in data screen, you can pair any Bluetooth screen with the Garmin app, as well as Strava, Zwift and TrainerRoad, for an immersive real-time ride experience. Close your eyes and feel the wind from the adjustable-power fans on your face and you could easily be out on your favorite ride or a famous climb on the cobbled Spring Classics.

3. Bowflex VeloCore

Front-on shot of a man riding a leaning Bowflex VeloCore exercise bike

Men’s Fitness verdict

If you have the space and cash and love cycling, the Bowflex VeloCore may be the exercise bike for you. This innovative bike offers a unique workout experience, and you’ll reap the fitness benefits.
Pros
 • Leaning feature targets the core and arms as well as legs
 • Decent selection of riding modes
 • One-year free JRNY app membership
 • Smooth and quiet ride
Cons
 • Design is bigger and heavier than most indoor bikes
 • Expensive

No bike works your core quite like the Bowflex VeloCore. That’s because at the press of a button it morphs from a stationary bike to a tilting one, adding a sense of realism and a whole new dimension to your cycling workout. It’s built-in screen comes in two sizes – this 22in version and a ‘cheaper’ 16in one – both of which can be used with a variety of streaming apps.

You get a readout of all your usual metrics, as well as the amount of lean – which you can switch on and off mid-ride. You can also use the large red knob to select one of 100 resistance levels to make your workouts more challenging. A one-year subscription is included to the JRNY adaptive fitness platform, which includes a personalized coaching system and daily custom workouts.

4. AssaultBike Classic

Product shot of air bike

Men’s Fitness verdict

The AssaultBike Classic has a robust design, good ergonomics, easy-to-access workouts and comfortable and adjustable contact points – and offers an ‘easy’ way to torch calories.
Pros
 • Robust design
 • Easy-to-programme workouts
 • Upgradable parts
Cons
 • Console can be hard to read

If torching fat is your primary aim when looking for an exercise bike, there’s little more focused on this task than an air bike. And given that the AssaultBike Classic is the OG of air bikes, and can still be found in commercial gyms up and down the land, it’s still the one to get.

While newer models might have a few more features, there’s nothing like the paired-back simplicity of the Classic. The ergonomics are dialed in, the belt drive super-smooth and almost every part can either be upgraded or replaced as an aftermarket purchase. If there’s such a thing as an air bike for life, the AssaultBike Classic is it.

5. Apex Smart Bike

Apex Smart Bike

Men’s Fitness verdict

You forgo the integrated screen and immersive experience of pricier models, but pound for pound the Apex Smart Bike is up there with the best.
Pros
 • Competitive price
 • Modern, stylish design
 • Well made and easy to set up
 • Membership inclues an extensive range of classes and instructors
Cons
 • No built-in screen
 • The seat can be slightly uncomfortable

With most bikes on test costing two grand and over, it’s refreshing to find an well designed exercise bike that comes in under the $1,000 / £1,000 mark. The Apex may be cheap, but it’s by no means light on features, with Bluetooth, WiFI and USB connectivity. Though there’s no built-in screen, you can tap into the fully featured Apex app through your iOS device.

Apex membership gives you access to a plethora of engaging instructor-led workouts, as well as playlists galore. All your riding stats are accessible throughout, including an approximate power output (calculated using current resistance and your RPM). It looks more stylish than most, so won’t look out of place in your living room. It’s also available in three colors, as well as the usual black.

How we test these exercise bikes

Our team of reviewers took delivery of these exercise bikes at home, to see how straight-forward delivery, unboxing and set-up was. They then joined any bundled content subscription services or fitness platforms, examining the quality of on-demand classes or training insights each provided. Where appropriate, they paired the bikes with third-party apps such as Zwift or Rouvy to assess each bike’s training versatility. They also assessed the reliability and performance of any Bluetooth or ANT+ connectivity by pairing to Android and iOS phones and tablets, as well as third-party heart rate monitors and smart watches, testing multiple connections where possible.

Our reviewers spent at least a month with each exercise bike in order to test each feature comprehensively and to assess the bike’s overall performance. Their workouts included interval sessions and longer endurance efforts. Where available, they’d also create workouts that utilized the bike’s full gear ratios, resistance ranges or hill incline features. Finally our testers examined build quality and looked for any potential wear issues that arose after at least a month of intense testing. Out testers took price, availability and access to after-market upgrades or replacement parts into consideration when giving each bike an overall score.

What to look for in the best exercise bikes

Resistance: Ideally you want as wide a resistance or gearing range as possible. Systems can vary immensely, from a simple adjustable flywheel to replicating complete drivetrains from specific manufacturers such as SRAM, Campagnolo and Shimano. Some systems are advanced rollers, on which you can mount your own bike, making the transition between indoor and outdoor riding as seamless as possible.

Adjustability: All indoor cycles will have some form of saddle and bar adjustability. Ideally you want both horizontal and vertical adjustment so you can dial in your perfect fit. Most also have quick-release adjustments and measurement scales, allowing you to quickly swap set-ups between riders.

Connectivity: Are you looking to connect a heart rate monitor or Bluetooth headphones or to stream content to a larger screen? Be sure to check out ANT+ and Bluetooth connectivity.

Comfort: Contact points are particularly important for promoting comfort – particularly over longer sessions. Saddles are a particularly subjective piece of kit. Only real-world testing will tell you if the saddle and bar set-up will be comfortable for you. So if you can try before you buy, so much the better. Most models also have swapable pedals so you can ride with trainers in toe straps or use your own SPD-specific pedals.

Interactivity: Whereas air bikes tend to just have simple screens with visual feedback showing speed, rpm, calories or heart rate, any indoor bike worth its salt will have some form of interactivity. Whether its via a built-in monitor or your own phone or tablet, you should be able to stream interactive content or access on-demand classes to supplement your workout. Though you may well have to pay a monthly subscription for these services.

Compact footprint: The actual bodies of most exercise bikes are quite compact, but watch out for the stands, which will increase the footprint significantly. Handlebar extensions and screen housings or holders can also create a significant overhang at the front, which will increase the space needed to store the bike.

Black Friday has become a much-anticipated event in the US, the UK and around the world, offering shoppers an opportunity to snag a bargain on a wide range of products.

But when is Black Friday, and what exactly is it?

Whether you’re on the hunt for Christmas prezzies or just fancy treating yourself to some new fitness kit, here’s everything you need to know about the global shopping extravaganza if you didn’t already, and how to bag the best deals.

A keyboard with a special Black Friday button
Do your research before hitting that buy now button this Black Friday

What is Black Friday?

Originating in the US, Black Friday has evolved into something of a global phenomenon. Unofficially kicking off the holiday shopping season, the retail frenzy has become a pre-Christmas tradition, with most major brands and department stores slashing prices and offering promotions on goods to convince people to splurge with their last paycheck before the holiday season.

Now’s your chance to get huge savings on big-ticket items, like this Polygon Siskui T7 mountain bike:

Product shot of a full-suspension mountain bike

Coined in Philadelphia some time in the ‘60s, the term Black Friday refers to how retailers moved from the red and ‘into the black’ – in other words, turned profitable, thanks to the sales and promotions on offer. The ‘80s and ‘90s saw the widespread adoption of the event as retail giants like Target and Walmart fuelled the shopping frenzy, offering huge, unmissable discounts on big-ticket items.

Before long, the scene shifted from crowded stores to the digital world – following the nature of the market – and that’ll be why Black Friday remains a highly anticipated day, with retailers across the board drawing hordes of eager shoppers to online marketplaces and department stores alike.

There are already plenty of bargains to be found, such as up to 70% off Myvitamins at Myprotein.com:

Vimto Multivitamin Gummies – were £16.99, now £10.99 (save 35%), myprotein.com

When is Black Friday?

Black Friday traditionally takes place every year on the day after Thanksgiving in the US. So it’s like the American version of the Boxing Day sales in the UK.

Black Friday normally falls on the fourth Friday in November, and since this is typically most people’s last pay cheque before the Christmas holidays, it’s become known as the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season.

This year, officially, Black Friday will take place on 29 November, but you can expect big deals from as early as 21 November.

There are already some great bargains to be had on high-end fitness kit too, with over £600 off brands such as Echelon:

Echelon Stride-6 Treadmill product shot

Echelon Stride-6 Auto-Folding Treadmill – was £1,599, now £972 (save £627), echelonfit.uk

How long do Black Friday deals last?

Black Friday deals typically start on the day after Thanksgiving, which is 29 November this year. While the length of these sales varies among retailers, the deals often extend beyond the Friday and continue on for a good week or so. Many stores, especially online retailers, launch early Black Friday promotions ahead of the main day and some continue to do so through the weekend that follows.

In recent years, the trend has shifted towards week-long or even month-long Black Friday events. It’s pretty standard these days to see Black Friday deals at the advent of November. Online retailers are also known to introduce flash sales or hourly deals. If there’s something in particular you are looking to buy in this year’s Black Friday sales, it’s worth checking your preferred store’s promotional calendars or signing up for its newsletter, as the duration can vary. That will help ensure you get enough time to grab a good bargain or two, but more on that below…

Check out this deal from Wahoo Fitness:

Product shot of a bike trainer

Wahoo Fitness KICKR Snap Indoor Bike Trainer – was £249.99, now £149.99 (save £100), ukwahoofitness.com

When is the best time to shop Black Friday deals?

The best time to shop Black Friday deals is typically on the day itself: the Friday after Thanksgiving. However, as mentioned earlier, many retailers initiate sales earlier in the week, and online deals may start even earlier.

Some of the most sought-after deals are available during doorbuster events, often in the early hours of Friday. Then there’s always Cyber Monday, the following Monday, which originally came about as the Black Friday of online shopping, but now seems to have been merged into the same Black Friday weekend. To maximise your savings and grab the best deals, try to be strategic, plan ahead and monitor pre-sales – doing so will help you capitalise on specific time-limited promotions.

Grab your dream bike this Black Friday with up to 30% off bikes at Ribble Cycles:

Product shot of a Ribble gravel bike

Ribble Gravel AL e – Enthusiast – was £2,999, now £2,699 (save £300), ribblecycles.co.uk

How to bag the best Black Friday deals

It might be easy to dismiss some of the sales you spot during Black Friday as underwhelming, with reduced sale prices not seeming all that cheaper than usual. This is common, as some retailers will overegg their RRP prices on price tags or stickers so that the reductions seem more appealing (a practice known as “price anchoring”).

However, if you’re well prepared, eagle-eyed and willing to put the effort into finding some bargains, it’s more than possible to save some decent dosh on the items on your list and make the most of this pre-Christmas shopping bonanza.

Here are seven top tips for grabbing the best Black Friday bargains:

1. Plan ahead

Start by making a list of the items you want to purchase. Whether it’s tech gadgets, clothing, home appliances or boring Christmas gifts like socks for your uncle Bob, knowing what you’re looking for will help you stay focused and avoid splurging unnecessarily on impulse buys.

2. Set a budget

Before you dive into the Black Friday sales, decide how much you’re willing to spend. Sticking to a budget will prevent overspending and eventual buyer’s remorse.

3. Do your research

Look up the products you plan to buy in advance. Read reviews, compare prices and familiarise yourself with the regular retail prices of the items you’re interested in. This way, you’ll recognise a genuine deal when you see one.

4. Follow your favourite retailers’ socials and newsletters

Many retailers send out exclusive deals and early access offers to their newsletter subscribers or social media followers. Sign up for your favourite stores’ newsletters and follow them on their social platforms. That way you’ll be the first to know about any Black Friday promotions they might be doing.

5. Use price comparison tools

Online price comparison tools and browser extensions can help you find the best prices across various retailers. They provide real-time price comparisons, helping you identify the most cost-effective option. Coupert is a particularly good one.

6. Get up early or stay up late

Black Friday sales often start at midnight or in the early hours of the morning. If you’re serious about scoring the best deals, set your alarm early. Make sure you have the right browser tabs open, ready to be one of the first to shop.

7. Consider Cyber Monday

If you don’t find what you’re looking for on Black Friday, don’t forget about Cyber Monday, which takes place the following Monday. Originally created to encourage consumers to take advantage of the online deals and discounts available after the Thanksgiving weekend, this is essentially just a continuation of the Black Friday sales but with a focus on online shopping. Still, it’s worth having a look to see if your top retailers have made any further markdowns.

Do you need an Amazon Prime membership for Black Friday deals?

While Amazon Prime members receive early access to certain deals and exclusive discounts, having a Prime membership isn’t required to access Black Friday deals on Amazon.

Non-Prime members can still enjoy substantial discounts during the Black Friday period. However, for those seeking extra perks like expedited shipping and early access to ‘Lightning Deals’, an Amazon Prime membership can prove beneficial, especially during the holiday shopping season. If you’re not already a member, it’s probably not worth buying a Prime membership just to access early Black Friday deals, unless you know for sure the price is outweighed by the savings.

We think these are the best gym shorts for men in 2024 https://mensfitness.co.uk/review/best-gym-shorts-for-men/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 12:06:34 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=491 To have the freedom to move without chafing or restriction you need high-performance training shorts

The post We think these are the best gym shorts for men in 2024 appeared first on Men's Fitness.

]]>
High-performance workout shorts give you the freedom to move without chafing, restriction or overheating during your gym sessions – here’s our pick of the best gym shorts for men.

Gym shorts are a bit like sports boxers: not the most exciting bit of gear, but find the best pair and you won’t want to wear anything else.

Conversely, wear the wrong type of shorts and you’ll soon know it. Because if you’ve had the misfortune of wearing an ill-fitting or ill-suited pair you’ll know that the chafing and general discomfort can ruin a workout.

Of course, style is subjective and there are various lengths, colors and materials to choose from. However, most men want a pair that sit an inch or two above the knee (those hard-earned quad muscles deserve some limelight). You also want the shorts material to be light enough to go unnoticed during high-intensity workouts. Though they shouldn’t be so flimsy that your gentleman’s agreement takes center stage.

Zipped pockets can be good if you prefer to hit the gym sans backpack. But bear in mind that big zips can rattle around, which can be off-putting during vigorous exercises – burpees, for example.

To help make your decision easier, here’s our list of the best gym shorts for men.

These are the best gym shorts for men

Competition is fierce in this category but we think the Vuori Kore Short makes pretty good on its claim to be ‘one short for every sport’. They’re comfortable yet durable enough for everything from gym-based workouts, to Sunday strolls to the local cafe.

Other gym shorts recommendations

Best for mixed workoutsSurprisingly for a company focused on athletic track wear, the Tracksmith Session Shorts get our vote for those who like to mix up their sessions. A split seam and comfy stretch fabric help it cope with all kinds of cardio and cross-training.
Best for sustainabilityAll Gym + Coffee’s apparel adheres to its Net Zero strategy and the Gym + Coffee Daybreak 7-Inch Shorts are no different. These ultra-lightweight shorts are ideal for intense, sweaty sessions or outdoor summer workouts too.

How we tested the best gym shorts

Our testers put each pair of shorts through their paces over at least a month. They wore them for a mixture of workouts. These ranged from strength work and HIIT sessions to cardio and cross training, with yoga and stretching sessions thrown in for good measure. They put them through multiple washes and tested them for fit, comfort, versatility, durability and coverage.

They also looked for shorts with good sustainability credentials as well as lightweight, stretchy and moisture-wicking fabrics. Additionally, extra features such as zipped storage, reversible waistbands and drawcord adjustability were taken into account too. And finally, they considered the range of sizes and colors, as well as style and suitability for wearing them outside the gym.

How to choose the best gym shorts for your workout

The best way to choose the right shorts for your workouts is to consider the type of exercise you do. What are the most important features that will help you perform better? Is flexibility of movement most important for your cross training? Is good breathability and moisture-wicking performance paramount for your HIIT and cardio sessions?

You might value support or coverage above all else. Or prefer a lighter, shorter short that you can also wear out on the track. Whatever your preference, you’ll find a short that’s ideal for you in the list above. Your budget will also play a part in your decision. But rest assured – they’re all high performance shorts made to move comfortably with you however intense your workout. And in our testers’ opinions they all offer excellent value for money.

What to look for when buying gym shorts

When purchasing gym shorts for men, several essential factors ensure comfort, functionality, and durability. Firstly, consider the fabric. Opt for moisture-wicking materials like polyester or spandex blends which effectively absorb sweat and keep you dry. These materials also provide flexibility, essential for a wide range of movements.

Secondly, pay attention to the fit. Gym shorts should offer a balance between snugness and freedom. Look for styles that provide ample room in the thigh region and have an elastic waistband with a drawstring for a secure yet adjustable fit. Length also plays a role; shorter shorts (5-7 inches inseam) offer better airflow and range of motion, while longer shorts provide more coverage and can be more comfortable for specific activities.

Additionally, consider features such as pockets, either zipped for security or open for convenience. Lining can also be a crucial factor; some gym shorts come with built-in liners for added support, while others do not. Lastly, look into the brand’s reputation and specific user reviews to gauge overall satisfaction regarding quality and longevity. By focusing on fabric, fit, length, features, and brand reliability, you can find the perfect gym shorts that enhance your performance and comfort.

Black Friday – the pre-Christmas retail frenzy that offers hefty discounts on tech, homeware, fitness gear and everything in between – can save you some serious cash. But the bad news is it can also be a playground for scammers looking to take advantage of eager online shoppers.

If you’re preparing for the biggest shopping day of the year on 29 November, you need to be aware of the potential scams and know how to protect yourself. If you don’t, you could end up with a nasty dent in your wallet. Or worse, become the victim of online payment fraud.

With the help of industry experts, we’ve compiled the most common Black Friday shopping scams and ways to avoid falling victim to them.

Common scams to look out for

No matter what you’re shopping for, don’t think you’re ever immune to the threat of cybercrooks.

Steven Dick, co-director at The Fitness Group, says scams in any industry – even the fitness sector – are an issue all year round but particularly so on Black Friday.

“Scammers are all too aware that it’s the time of year that people are likely to be looking to spend more than they otherwise would,” Dick says.

“The tactics which are used to deceive purchasers are very crafty and can catch anyone out.”

Here are the typical scams all shoppers should be aware of when buying anything online during this year’s Black Friday:

Phishing emails

Watch out for emails that claim to offer exclusive deals. While many retailers will promote their Black Friday bargains via email, cybercriminals can mimic popular sellers by creating a fake but very similar email address and then replicating the format and language style of genuine emails from the retailer.

“The fraudulent email will contain a link to a fake website where its sole purpose is to steal your information,” explains Stuart Deavall, digital marketing manager at NetGiant. “A simple way to tell if a website is secure is to check whether the site has a security certificate, which should be evident by a small padlock next to the URL.”

Fake websites

Anne Cutler, cybersecurity evangelist at Keeper Security, warns that it’s common for cybercriminals to set up malicious fake “online stores” whose only purpose is to steal payment card data and other personal information.

“Stick with retailers that are well known or that you’ve done business with before,” she says. “If the website and deal feels too good to be true, it probably is.”

Bait-and-switch tactics

It’s worth having your wits about you, even when shopping on the high street. Some sellers may advertise a specific item at a low price, but when you visit the store, they claim it’s sold out and try to upsell a more expensive alternative.

“Stick to trusted retailers and always read reviews beforehand,” advises Dick.

Smishing

Another common scam that’s growing in popularity is ‘smishing’ – the act of using SMS text messages as a trap, whereby scammers will pose as a business, claiming that a parcel is being delivered to your address.

“This scam could be easier to fall for during Black Friday, when you may have made multiple orders on different sites, and are waiting for goods to be delivered,” says Deavall.

“The criminal may send a link for you to click through; if it’s unclear who the sender is, based on the URL, you shouldn’t open the link.”

To report a suspicious text to your mobile provider, the UK Government recommends forwarding any texts that don’t feel legit to 7726 for free. In the US you can report fraud on the Department of Justice website or via the Internet Crime Complaints Centre.

Malicious mobile apps

Fraudulent mobile apps are also very common during the Black Friday sales season, says Cutler. In the same way that fake websites look almost identical to their authentic counterparts, mobile apps will masquerade as the real deal with no intention of sending you the item you paid for.

“Designed to look like legitimate shopping apps, these platforms can contain malware, steal personal information and deceive users into making purchases that never arrive.”

Customer support impersonation

Another prevalent scam used by online crooks involves fraudsters claiming to be customer support from large companies, especially popular retailers where you might have made a Black Friday order.

“Watch out for text messages claiming that you’ve made multiple expensive purchases that you need to verify,” warns Deavall.

“The aim of the scam is to lure you into responding that you haven’t authorised the transaction, which can then lead to you resetting your password.”

During this process, the imposters can gain access to your sensitive information and steal passwords and login details.

Tips for avoiding Black Friday scams

Now you’re aware of the common tactics scammers use to try and con you into taking your money, here are some of the best ways to be more vigilant when shopping online:

Read the small print

Scammers might promote irresistible deals such as cheap gym memberships, but they often come with hidden fees or long-term commitments. Read the fine print, and be wary once again of providing your personal details.

Avoid using public Wi-Fi

Although you may see a great Black Friday deal and want to make the most of the bargain there and then, it’s always a wise idea to wait until you can make the purchase using your private WiFi connection or mobile data.

“Any public network is open to abuse, meaning there is always the chance that a fraudster is monitoring your activity and can log your payment details,” says Deavall.

“The bottom line is that, even if you miss the deal, there will always be alternative offers to take advantage of, with some retailers waiting until Cyber Monday to make their best and final reductions.”

Look out for unsecured websites

Ensure the website you’re buying products from has a secure URL, for example, one which starts with ‘https://’, and avoid making purchases on unencrypted or suspicious sites. This will go a long way in helping you protect your personal and financial information.

Don’t give in to pressure

Be aware that scammers often create a sense of urgency by claiming deals are available for a limited time.

Dick recommends not to rush into purchases. “Take your time to research and make informed decisions,” he says.

Be sceptical

Lastly, Cutler recommends not being too trusting and be determined to not let the scammers win.

“Keep your eyes open, practise good cyber hygiene and employ a healthy dose of scepticism when seeking out the hot holiday deals this season.”
