Black Friday has become a much-anticipated event in the US, the UK and around the world, offering shoppers an opportunity to snag a bargain on a wide range of products.

But when is Black Friday, and what exactly is it?

Whether you’re on the hunt for Christmas prezzies or just fancy treating yourself to some new fitness kit, here’s everything you need to know about the global shopping extravaganza if you didn’t already, and how to bag the best deals.

A keyboard with a special Black Friday button
Do your research before hitting that buy now button this Black Friday

What is Black Friday?

Originating in the US, Black Friday has evolved into something of a global phenomenon. Unofficially kicking off the holiday shopping season, the retail frenzy has become a pre-Christmas tradition, with most major brands and department stores slashing prices and offering promotions on goods to convince people to splurge with their last paycheck before the holiday season.

Now’s your chance to get huge savings on big-ticket items, like this Polygon Siskui T7 mountain bike:

Product shot of a full-suspension mountain bike

Polygon Siskui T7 Full-Suspension Mountain Bike – was £2,000, now £1,399 (save £601), gooutdoors.co.uk

Coined in Philadelphia some time in the ‘60s, the term Black Friday refers to how retailers moved from the red and ‘into the black’ – in other words, turned profitable, thanks to the sales and promotions on offer. The ‘80s and ‘90s saw the widespread adoption of the event as retail giants like Target and Walmart fuelled the shopping frenzy, offering huge, unmissable discounts on big-ticket items.

Before long, the scene shifted from crowded stores to the digital world – following the nature of the market – and that’ll be why Black Friday remains a highly anticipated day, with retailers across the board drawing hordes of eager shoppers to online marketplaces and department stores alike.

There are already plenty of bargains to be found, such as up to 70% off Myvitamins at Myprotein.com:

Vimto Multivitamin Gummies – were £16.99, now £10.99 (save 35%), myprotein.com

When is Black Friday?

Black Friday traditionally takes place every year on the day after Thanksgiving in the US. So it’s like the American version of the Boxing Day sales in the UK.

Black Friday normally falls on the fourth Friday in November, and since this is typically most people’s last pay cheque before the Christmas holidays, it’s become known as the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season.

This year, officially, Black Friday will take place on 29 November, but you can expect big deals from as early as 21 November.

There are already some great bargains to be had on high-end fitness kit too, with over £600 off brands such as Echelon:

Echelon Stride-6 Treadmill product shot

Echelon Stride-6 Auto-Folding Treadmill – was £1,599, now £972 (save £627), echelonfit.uk

How long do Black Friday deals last?

Black Friday deals typically start on the day after Thanksgiving, which is 29 November this year. While the length of these sales varies among retailers, the deals often extend beyond the Friday and continue on for a good week or so. Many stores, especially online retailers, launch early Black Friday promotions ahead of the main day and some continue to do so through the weekend that follows.

In recent years, the trend has shifted towards week-long or even month-long Black Friday events. It’s pretty standard these days to see Black Friday deals at the advent of November. Online retailers are also known to introduce flash sales or hourly deals. If there’s something in particular you are looking to buy in this year’s Black Friday sales, it’s worth checking your preferred store’s promotional calendars or signing up for its newsletter, as the duration can vary. That will help ensure you get enough time to grab a good bargain or two, but more on that below…

Check out this deal from Wahoo Fitness:

Wahoo Fitness KICKR Snap Indoor Bike Trainer – was £249.99, now £149.99 (save £100), ukwahoofitness.com

When is the best time to shop Black Friday deals?

The best time to shop Black Friday deals is typically on the day itself: the Friday after Thanksgiving. However, as mentioned earlier, many retailers initiate sales earlier in the week, and online deals may start even earlier.

Some of the most sought-after deals are available during doorbuster events, often in the early hours of Friday. Then there’s always Cyber Monday, the following Monday, which originally came about as the Black Friday of online shopping, but now seems to have been merged into the same Black Friday weekend. To maximise your savings and grab the best deals, try to be strategic, plan ahead and monitor pre-sales – doing so will help you capitalise on specific time-limited promotions.

Grab your dream bike this Black Friday with up to 30% off bikes at Ribble Cycles:

Ribble Gravel AL e – Enthusiast – was £2,999, now £2,699 (save £300), ribblecycles.co.uk

How to bag the best Black Friday deals

It might be easy to dismiss some of the sales you spot during Black Friday as underwhelming, with reduced sale prices not seeming all that cheaper than usual. This is common, as some retailers will overegg their RRP prices on price tags or stickers so that the reductions seem more appealing (a practice known as “price anchoring”).

However, if you’re well prepared, eagle-eyed and willing to put the effort into finding some bargains, it’s more than possible to save some decent dosh on the items on your list and make the most of this pre-Christmas shopping bonanza.

Here are seven top tips for grabbing the best Black Friday bargains:

1. Plan ahead

Start by making a list of the items you want to purchase. Whether it’s tech gadgets, clothing, home appliances or boring Christmas gifts like socks for your uncle Bob, knowing what you’re looking for will help you stay focused and avoid splurging unnecessarily on impulse buys.

2. Set a budget

Before you dive into the Black Friday sales, decide how much you’re willing to spend. Sticking to a budget will prevent overspending and eventual buyer’s remorse.

3. Do your research

Look up the products you plan to buy in advance. Read reviews, compare prices and familiarise yourself with the regular retail prices of the items you’re interested in. This way, you’ll recognise a genuine deal when you see one.

4. Follow your favourite retailers’ socials and newsletters

Many retailers send out exclusive deals and early access offers to their newsletter subscribers or social media followers. Sign up for your favourite stores’ newsletters and follow them on their social platforms. That way you’ll be the first to know about any Black Friday promotions they might be doing.

5. Use price comparison tools

Online price comparison tools and browser extensions can help you find the best prices across various retailers. They provide real-time price comparisons, helping you identify the most cost-effective option. Coupert is a particularly good one.

6. Get up early or stay up late

Black Friday sales often start at midnight or in the early hours of the morning. If you’re serious about scoring the best deals, set your alarm early. Make sure you have the right browser tabs open, ready to be one of the first to shop.

7. Consider Cyber Monday

If you don’t find what you’re looking for on Black Friday, don’t forget about Cyber Monday, which takes place the following Monday. Originally created to encourage consumers to take advantage of the online deals and discounts available after the Thanksgiving weekend, this is essentially just a continuation of the Black Friday sales but with a focus on online shopping. Still, it’s worth having a look to see if your top retailers have made any further markdowns.

Do you need an Amazon Prime membership for Black Friday deals?

While Amazon Prime members receive early access to certain deals and exclusive discounts, having a Prime membership isn’t required to access Black Friday deals on Amazon.

Non-Prime members can still enjoy substantial discounts during the Black Friday period. However, for those seeking extra perks like expedited shipping and early access to ‘Lightning Deals’, an Amazon Prime membership can prove beneficial, especially during the holiday shopping season. If you’re not already a member, it’s probably not worth buying a Prime membership just to access early Black Friday deals, unless you know for sure the price is outweighed by the savings.

As a nutritionist I think these are the best pre-workouts for boosting your training https://mensfitness.co.uk/review/best-pre-workouts/ Wed, 27 Nov 2024 15:14:09 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=17521 Energize your efforts with nutritionist Rob Hobson's pre-workout picks

The post As a nutritionist I think these are the best pre-workouts for boosting your training appeared first on Men's Fitness.

]]>
The best pre-workouts offer carefully formulated active ingredients and usually a caffeine kick to help you maximize your training efforts.

If you plan on upping your training game in 2024, you’ll want to hit perform at your best in every session. The best pre-workout supplements help you do just that, by delivering active ingredients and stimulants to prime your body for the exercise ahead, increasing endurance capacity and alertness, delaying the onset of fatigue, and often providing carbs to help fuel your training.

A word of warning to the caffeine-sensitive: though there are some exceptions, caffeine is often the main active ingredient in pre-workouts, so they’re not recommended for anyone who gets jittery or feels sick after too much coffee.

Why you can trust Men’s Fitness

We spend hours testing every product we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. This list of the best pre-workouts was compiled by Rob Hobson, registered nutritionist (AFN) and sports nutritionist (SENr). He tested every pre-workout in this list (as well as plenty that didn’t make it), assessing each one for their quality of ingredients and how effective they are at boosting energy. Find out more about how we test.

This is the best pre-workout I tested

My favorite overall is the foodspring Energy Aminos pre-workout. This supplement contains a good mix of the basic ingredients you’ll want in a pre-workout (e.g. caffeine and branched-chain amino acids). I also thought it tasted good (which is not always a given with pre-workouts), making it a great all-rounder whether you’re pushing weights or sweating away in a spin class.

Other pre-workout recommendations

Best for flavorIt’s the joint-most expensive on test but the Crazy Nutrition Intensive Pre-Train range features three well-balanced flavors that are the most pleasant tasting of the bunch.
Best caffeine-free optionIf you’re sensitive to caffeine, your pre-workout choices are pretty limited. Healthspan has one caffeine-free option but at half the price the two from Protein Works Raze Extreme nick it.
Best valueMyprotein Alpha Pre-Workout works out the cheapest of any powder on test, at just 97p per serving (if you can still find the tubs). It has a substantial 300mg of caffeine too.

1. foodspring Energy Aminos

foodspring energy aminos

Men’s Fitness verdict

Bolstered by BCAAs and slow-release caffeine, foodspring’s pre-workout is a good choice, and ideal for morning sessions. The flavor might be too sweet for some tastes though.
Pros
 • Simple but effective list of active ingredients
 • Four flavors
 • 6g BCAAs
Cons
 • Tastes quite sweet
 • Slight aftertaste
 • Only available online

Rather than throwing dozens of natural ingredients into the mix, foodspring goes for a more selective approach with its Energy Aminos pre-workout. The ingredients list is simpler than most, but features the good stuff: including BCAAs, caffeine and B and C vitamins.

It’s one of the few pre-workouts I tested to include guarana, but that makes a lot of sense as it helps release its caffeine payload more slowly, avoiding spikes and jitters. At £1.50 per serving this represents solid value too.

2. Crazy Nutrition Intensive Pre-Train

Product shot of Crazy Nutrition Intensive Pre-Train powder

Men’s Fitness verdict

Instead of carbs and protein, you’ve got 19 active ingredients in Crazy Nutrition’s pre-workout. Some are more effective than others but it’s a good tasting option available with or without caffeine.
Pros
 • Pleasant taste
 • Mixes well
 • Comprehensive list of active ingredients
Cons
 • Expensive
 • Some ingredients not yet shown to improve performance

At £2.50 a serving, Crazy Nutrition’s pre-workout is the priciest pre-workout I tested, but subscribing to regular deliveries with give you a substantial 30% off. I think it’s one of the tastiest, too, with three well-balanced flavors.

There’s a whopping 19 active ingredients here – more than any other pre-workout I tested – which should cover all your bases whatever discipline you’re preparing for. There’s a good dose of citrulline, especially, which helps deliver oxygen as your muscles start to fatigue.

3. Protein Works Raze Extreme

protein works raze extreme

Men’s Fitness verdict

Another good protein- and carb-free choice fortified with 12 active ingredients. They all seem relevant to pre-workouts, but some – like creatine – could do with higher doses.
Pros
 • Good blend of active ingredients
 • No aftertaste
 • Mixes well
Cons
 • Low doses of active ingredients
 • Only available online

This Raze Extreme pre-workout is available in three fruity, caffeinated flavors and two caffeine-free versions. At £1.25 a serving it represents decent value, especially as it packs in 12 active ingredients and a useful 200mg caffeine.

In my opinion, Protein Works gets the flavors about right – I found there to be just a hint of a synthetic taste and no bitter aftertaste. There are B and C vitamins to look after your energy metabolism and immune system, too.

4. Healthspan Elite All Blacks Pre-Workout Fuel

Product shot of a packet of Healthspan Elite All Blacks Pre-Workout Fuel

Men’s Fitness verdict

With a nice mix of carbs to fuel your workouts, Healthspan’s simple but effective blend is designed to meet the training needs of the All Blacks. It tastes good and contains high-quality ingredients.
Pros
 • Good fruity flavor that’s not too sweet
 • Simple but effective blend of active ingredients
 • Contains a good source of carbohydrates to fuel more aerobic sessions
Cons
 • Doses for some ingredients are quite low
 • Only one flavor with and without caffeine

If the All Blacks rugby team put their name to a product, it’s usually because it’s the business, and that’s just the case with Healthpan’s Elite pre-workout. I found it to be a good source of BCAAs, protein and particularly carbs, making this a useful way to fuel your cardio or strength sessions.

The inclusion of taurine will help give your endurance a boost, and it decreases the need for large doses of caffeine – making this a better choice for workouts later in the day. At £2.50 a serving it’s not cheap, but it is high-quality.

5. Innermost The Energy Booster

Product shot of a pack of Innermost Energy Booster

Men’s Fitness verdict

It’s a risk if your going to make your one and only flavor pineapple. But as long as that doesn’t turn you off you’ll get a fresh-tasting pre-workout with energy-boosting ingredients.
Pros
 • Low caffeine will suit those with high sensitivity
 • Vitamin B complex
 • Pleasant flavor
Cons
 • Only one flavor
 • Slightly odd aftertaste
 • Some of the ingredients need to be taken daily to be effective

If you love pineapple, you’ll be onto a winner with The Energy Booster from Innermost. That’s mainly because that’s the only flavor it comes in, but also because I found the taste to be pretty moreish. A good dollop of BCAAs will see you right, as will the inclusion of guarana – meaning less caffeine.

There’s a healthy dose of vitamin B complex as well as maca to influence mood, but the main sell is the price – at just £1 per serving there’s only one other pre-workout powder I tested that works out cheaper.

Read our full Innermost The Energy Booster review

6. bulk Complete Pre-Workout

Product shot of Bulk Complete Pre-Workout powder

Men’s Fitness verdict

Bulk packs protein, carbs, caffeine and BCAAs into a decent tasting pre-workout. There are plenty of active ingredients, too, but not many in high enough doses to be effective, we think.
Pros
 • Contains caffeine to aid concentration
 • No unpleasant aftertaste
 • Good blend of active ingredients
Cons
 • You’ll need to take some ingredients daily for them to be effective
 • Only available online
 • Some doses aren’t enough to be effective

bulk’s Complete Pre-Workout comes in four delicious flavors (I recommend the Cola) and is loaded with 8.8g protein and 12g carbohydrates, as well as 12g of active ingredients per serving.

At £1.67 per serving, it’s not one of the cheapest powders but if you like a shot of caffeine in your pre-workout then it definitely delivers, with the recommended 200mg to improve alertness and concentration. And it’s certainly a winner on taste – I found no trace of any unpleasant aftertaste.

7. Myprotein Alpha Pre-Workout

Product shot of a packet of pre-workout

Men’s Fitness verdict

Myprotein takes the no-carbs-plenty-of-caffeine approach to pre-workouts and opts for just five active ingredients. It’s an effective balance but the slightly salty aftertaste takes getting used to.
Pros
 • Contains 300mg of caffeine
 • Mixes well with water
 • Good value
Cons
 • Slightly salty aftertaste
 • Some ingredients need to be taken daily to be effective
 • Only available online

Myprotein eschews the carbs in favour of a caffeine kick for its pre-workout. There’s a hefty 300mg in here, so make sure you don’t exceed the serving recommendations. Still, it’s a good choice if you’re doing high-intensity workouts that require short bursts of activity.

For those who are prepping for training on a budget, Myprotein’s Alpha pre-workout works out the cheapest of any powder on test, at just 97p per serving. Not bad for the equivalent of two cups of coffee.

How we test the best pre-workouts

There are lots of different pre-workouts on the market and the number of active ingredients differs substantially between brands. (However, the research to support their effectiveness in terms of performance is not always solid.) While I was testing, I judged each pre-workout on the following criteria.

Ingredients: I checked the ingredient list for high-quality ingredients and any performance-enhancing compounds, particularly:

 1. Caffeine: Not essential for pre-workouts, but it can improve energy levels, mental focus, and exercise performance.
 2. Beta-Alanine: Helps in reducing muscle fatigue and improving endurance by buffering lactic acid build-up.
 3. Creatine: Aids in increasing strength, power, and muscle gains.
 4. B-vitamins: Help in converting food into energy and support overall energy production.
 5. L-arginine: Can enhance blood flow and improve nutrient delivery to muscles.
 6. Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs): Help in reducing muscle fatigue and enhancing muscle recovery.
 7. Electrolytes: Important for maintaining hydration and proper muscle function during exercise.

Energy boost: I assessed how quickly each pre-workout gave me a noticeable energy boost. I also wanted to find out whether that boost was sustained, or provided a less useful peak and trough effect.

Price: I considered the cost per serving to ensure you’re getting value for money, while also avoiding overly expensive products with unnecessary additives.

Taste: The most effective pre-workout in the world is fairly useless if you can’t stomach the taste. Although flavor is subjective, I rated each product on how nice they were to consume.

Benefits of pre-workouts

If you struggle to get yourself pumped up before a training session, pre-workout could offer a helping hand. Usually taken 30-60 minutes before exercising, pre-workouts are designed to provide energy to fuel workouts and improve athletic performance. While the energy boost is usually provided by caffeine and carbohydrates, additional ingredients can offer specific benefits for different sports and training methods.

What to look for when buying pre-workout

When shopping for pre-workouts, the main ingredients you’re likely to see are carbohydrates and caffeine. Alongside these energy boosters, pre-workouts often contain other compounds such as beta-alanine, creatine and branched-chain amino acids (check out the benefits of BCAAs).

While you may be tempted to go for a product containing everything, only some of these ingredients necessarily suit every type of sport. In some cases, certain compounds may have a negative impact. For instance, beta-alanine may be suitable for a middle-distance runner. However, taking creatine could cause unwanted weight gain, affecting their power-to-weight ratio.

Choosing the best pre-workout for you will depend on the type of training you’re doing. Different active ingredients will support different elements of your workout – such as citrulline delaying muscle fatigue or taurine decreasing lactate accumulation. Check out our what is pre-workout guide for more details on choosing the right option for you.

Despite having a heart condition, British Indoor Rowing Champion Graham Benton has defied the odds to win multiple world titles

INTERVIEW: Rob Kemp

The British Rowing Indoor Championships (BRIC) returns on December 7-8, 2024, as part of the FitFest event at Birmingham’s NEC. With over 2000 competitors from various countries, each vying to be crowned British Rowing Indoor Champion the event is expected to attract upwards of 15,000 attendees and competitors across five major fitness disciplines.

Besides rowing, the event will include powerlifting, the England Weightlifting Championships, obstacle course racing, and the AHX Finals Weekend.

British indoor rower Graham Benton, 51, went from using a rowing machine in the gym at the end of a weights session to becoming a British, European and World Champion – winning the BRIC a record 17 times. Benton now competes in the 50-54 age category and remains the man to beat. At last year’s BRIC he left the race floor with yet another record, finishing the Masters 50-54 Open 2,000m in just 6:05.00. Ahead of the upcoming BRIC 2024, Men’s Fitness spoke to him to discover what it takes to become a World Champion.

Men’s Fitness: Graham, did you really just go from using the rower for a bit of cardio to taking on the world’s best?

Graham Benton: Pretty much! I started indoor rowing back in 2002 with no prior experience, just a love for fitness. I’d get on the rowing machine after a weight session and got quite into it. When I started to look into it more, I discovered this whole indoor rowing community and discovered that I was recording decent scores, only seconds off of record times.

Over time, I got more involved, began competing at national and international levels, and never looked back. Now, I’m here, training consistently, and keeping competitive even as I manage the challenges that come with age.

MF: Can you tell us about your training regimen?

GB: I train daily, with a strong emphasis on listening to my body, especially as I get older. My routine used to be relentless, but now, recovery is just as crucial. Nutrition-wise, I focus on lean proteins and vegetables but allow myself some indulgences – a burger here and there, or a drink occasionally. Keeping balance is key to staying motivated and fit over the long term.

MF: What keeps you motivated after so many years in the sport?

GB: For me, it’s the drive to push my limits. Whether I’m racing or not, I enjoy working towards personal goals. Training has become a constant in my life, and the satisfaction of knowing I’m still competitive is invaluable. That feeling of accomplishment keeps me going. To be a Champion in something is a huge spur to keep doing it, and indoor rowing is structured in a way that no matter what age or ability there’s an opportunity for you to compete and excel.

MF: You manage a heart condition while competing. How do you balance this with your training?

GB: I was diagnosed with ventricular tachycardia a few years ago and had to modify my training, especially in the beginning, to keep my heart rate within safe limits. But with medication and guidance, I’ve adjusted. These days, my back actually limits me more, but I’m still committed to pushing forward.

MF: Injuries are part of any athlete’s life. How do you manage setbacks and adapt your goals?

GB: Injuries are definitely part of the sport. Recently, I hurt my back, which limited my rowing, so I’ve turned to cycling to maintain my fitness. My coach and I have adapted my training around injuries, focusing on consistency. The key is flexibility in both your mindset and approach.

MF: Who are some of the athletes or clubs to watch at the BRIC this year?

GB: Expect fierce competition! Notable clubs include MAD Team, Fitness Matters, and Sub6. One competitor I’m watching closely in my event is South African rower Luke Wollenslager—an incredibly tough contender. We’ve had some thrilling races over the years, and I’m looking forward to seeing how this year shapes up.

MF: Any advice for older athletes or newcomers looking to start indoor rowing?

GB: Definitely. Start gradually and listen to your body. Rowing is great because it’s accessible at any age. Consistent, smart training will build a solid base and help avoid burnout. There’s always room to improve, no matter when you start.

• For more information or to register, visit British Rowing Indoor Championships registration closes on November 26 for Saturday events, while slots for Super Sprint Sunday will be available until the day of the event, space permitting.

These are the best protein bars we’ve snacked on in 2024 https://mensfitness.co.uk/review/best-protein-bars/ Mon, 25 Nov 2024 10:11:26 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=6295 Protein bars are the grab-and-go recovery option for men on the move

Protein bars are the grab-and-go recovery option for anyone on the move. Here’s our pick of the best tried-and-tested options to fuel your fitness drive.

When hunger knocks post-workout, it’s easy to reach for handy snack bars. These can be loaded with unhealthy fats and sugars, however, which are often high in calories and lead to energy peaks and troughs. The best protein bars, on the other hand, pack in more of the good stuff – namely, protein.

Snacking on protein bars allows you to reach your daily protein goals and deliver a much-needed supply to damaged muscles. They also provide a simple on-the-go alternative to more cumbersome protein shakes or time-intensive meals. Plus, they usually taste pretty good, so it’s a win-win-win situation.

Why you can trust Men’s Fitness

We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Our team of reviewers includes experienced product testers, PTs, nutritionists and fitness writers – as well as the core MF team – who know exactly what sets the best products apart from the rest. This list of the best protein bars was compiled by Rob Hobson, registered nutritionist (AFN) and sports nutritionist (SENr). Find out more about how we test.

What is the best protein bar?

There are plenty of protein bar brands out there now, most of which offer a high-quality protein dose around the magic 20g mark. But it takes great taste and texture to make the best protein bars too, together with low cost and other factors. Ultimately, I’d recommend using Grenade protein bars. The texture is chewy and the taste is sweet without being too sickly. There are also a load of flavours to choose from and, crucially, a solid 20g of good-quality protein per bar.

Other protein bar recommendations

Best for nutritionIf you’re looking for a bar with nutritional benefits, look no further than the Fulfil Vitamin and Protein Bar. Fulfil bars are fortified with vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, C and E, as well as folic acid (and they hit the 20g protein benchmark).
Best vegan optionThe vegan versions of the PhD Smart Bar range are some of the nicest plant-based protein bars we’ve tried. They have a pleasant, rich taste that unlike some on this list isn’t too sweet, and deliver a decent dose of protein too.
Best for competitionIf you’re involved in elite competition you need nutritional supplements that are Informed Sport approved. That’s exactly what the Healthspan Elite All Blacks HiLO Protein Bar is, plus it’s high in fibre and protein and low in sugar.

1. Grenade Protein Bar

grenade protein barMen's Fitness editor's choice badge

Men’s Fitness verdict

There’s a reason why Grenade is the UK’s best selling protein bar. Loaded with 21g protein and just 1.4g sugar, it’s the best-tasting, best textured, least-sickly sweet bar we’ve tested.
Pros
 • Great tasting
 • Excellent chewy texture
 • Good amount of protein
Cons
 • Expensive
 • A bit sweet
 • High in polyols
Protein per bar21g
Flavors15 including Salted Caramel, Oreo, Dark Chocolate Mint, Cookie Dough, White Chocolate and more

An obvious choice, perhaps, but the UK’s best-selling protein bars (previously called Carb Killas) is so for a reason. Loaded with 21g protein and just 1.4g sugar, it’s the best-tasting, least-sickly sweet bar I’ve tested.

The Salted Caramel flavor gets my vote, although there are no less than 14 others to choose from. The only downside is restricting yourself to one a day (but who are we to tell you how to live your life).

2. Healthspan Elite All Blacks HiLO Protein Bar

Healthspan Elite All Blacks HiLO Protein Bar

Men’s Fitness verdict

Low in sugar and high in fibre, these HiLO bars pack 20g of quality protein into each of their delicious flavours. They’re purely plant based and approved for elite competition too.
Pros
 • Great taste
 • Good amount of quality protein
 • High in fiber
Cons
 • Slightly bitter aftertaste
 • Only available online
 • Limited flavors
Protein per bar20g
FlavorsBlack Forest Gateau, Chocolate & Salted Caramel, White Chocolate Raspberry

As you’d expect from any sports nutrition product endorsed by the All Blacks rugby team, the Healthspan Elite protein bars uses quality ingredients. Low in sugar and high in fiber, they also pack 20g of protein into each of their delicious flavors – black forest gateau, chocolate and salted caramel, and white chocolate. Plus, they’re Informed Sport approved, too, making them suitable for elite competition.

3. Kinetika Deluxe Protein Bar

Kinetika Deluxe Protein Bar

Men’s Fitness verdict

There’s only 14g protein in these small 45g bars but they have the best taste and texture on test and are WADA and Informed Sport approved for competition.
Pros
 • Pleasantly chewy texture
 • Not too sweet
 • Good chocolate flavor
Cons
 • Only available online
 • Not as high in protein as most bars
 • Limited flavors
Protein per bar14g
FlavorsChocolate Brownie, Cookies & Cream, Peanut Caramel

Kinetika makes its bars with quality batch-tested ingredients. So, it’s no surprise they get the thumbs-up from WADA and Informed Sport. It uses milk protein from grass-fed, hormone-free cow’s milk and its bars have the best taste and texture of any on test.

It’s a shame there’s only 14g of protein in every serving, but they are small 45g bars, so why not have one and a half, or even two at a time?

4. Barebells Bar

Barebells bar

Men’s Fitness verdict

One of the less synthetic-tasting protein snacks, Barebell bars combine rich flavors with simple, natural ingredients. They’re low in sugar and don’t have the powdery texture that many bars do.
Pros
 • Nice rich flavor
 • Lots of flavors to choose from
 • Tastes less synthetic than most bars
Cons
 • Quite sweet
 • Slightly bitter aftertaste
Protein per barUp to 20g (depending on flavor)
Flavors11 including Caramel Chocolate, Raspberry Cream, Crispy Nougat, Salted Peanut Caramel

One of the less synthetic-tasting protein snacks, Barebells bars combine a variety of rich flavors with simple, natural ingredients. Of the 11 different versions, four vegan or soft protein options don’t make the 20g mark, but the rest hit the spot and are tasty too.

They all have a pleasant, rich taste, are low in sugar and don’t have the claggy or powdery texture that many of the best protein bars do.

5. Fulfil Vitamin and Protein Bar

Product shot of a Fulfil protein bar

Men’s Fitness verdict

Fulfil bars hit the 20g protein benchmark, have half the calories of most protein bars and are available in 11 mouth-watering flavors. They’re anti-oxidant-rich and low in polyols too.
Pros
 • Good flavor
 • Fortified with vitamins and minerals
 • Good amount of protein (20g)
Cons
 • A bit too chewy
 • Lacks texture
 • Smaller-sized bar
Protein per bar20g
Flavors11 including Salted Caramel, Chocolate Brownie, White Chocolate & Cookie Dough, Mint Chocolate

Suitable for anyone with an eye for boosting more than just protein intake, Fulfil bars are fortified with vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, C and E, as well as folic acid.

They hit the 20g protein benchmark, have half the calories of most protein bars and are available in 11 mouth-watering flavours, which sounds like a win-win to us.

6. Vow Nutrition Protein Bar

Men’s Fitness verdict

Vow only makes three flavors, but why make more when they taste this good? Taste and texture are both spot-on and sugar content is minimal. It’s just a shame it doesn’t hit the 20g protein mark.
Pros
 • Pleasant chewy texture
 • Low in sugar
Cons
 • Relatively high in polyols
 • Only 16g protein
Protein per bar16g
FlavorsCookies & Cream, Peanut Crunch, Salted Caramel

If Team GB think Vow Nutrition Protein Bars are good enough for them, then we reckon they’re good enough for us too. Its three flavors – cookies and cream, peanut crunch and salted caramel – are all remarkably tasty, and the nutrition numbers look good too.

There’s 16g of protein in each bar and an microscopic 0.4g of sugar. These bars are Informed Sport approved so we know the pea protein isolate and soya protein isolate come from good quality sources.

7. PhD Smart Bar

PhD Smart Bar box

Men’s Fitness verdict

You don’t need a doctorate to know PhD bars will meet your post-workout recovery needs. The texture might not be to everyone’s liking, but its recovery credentials make perseverance worth your while.
Pros
 • Nice rich taste
 • Good amount of protein
 • Not too sweet
Cons
 • Slightly gritty texture
 • High in polyols
 • Big 64g bar
Protein per bar20g
Flavors10 including Birthday Cake, Chocolate Brownie, Peanut Butter, Dark Raspberry, Vanilla Fudge

With 20g plant-based protein per bar, you don’t need a doctorate to know PhD bars will meet your post-workout recovery needs. Some of the best protein bars on the market, there are eight rich flavors to choose from – though keep an eye on a calorie count that can reach 261kcal per 65g bar.

The texture might not be to everyone’s liking, but those recovery credentials make a bit of perseverance worth your while. Plus, they’re available in half-size and vegan versions.

8. USN Trust Crunch

USN Trust Crunch

Men’s Fitness verdict

These Trust Crunch Bars from Ultimate Sports Nutrition almost feel too indulgent for post-workout nutrition. The flavors are bang-on but sugar content is a little high in some flavors.
Pros
 • Good range of indulgent dessert flavors
 • Decent protein dose
Cons
 • Textura can be gritty
 • One of the more expensive options
Protein per bar20g
FlavorsCookies & Cream, Fudge Brownie, Raspberry Cheesecake, Triple Choc, White Choc Cookie Dough

Sweet-toothed gym-goers will enjoy the dessert flavors (fudge brownie or raspberry cheesecake, anyone?), and 20g protein is optimal post-workout fuel.

It’s worth noting the sugar content: 2.5g sugar is slightly more than some of the other best protein bars in this list. However, 213 calories is about par.

How we test the best protein bars

Our expert nutritionist Rob Hobson conducted this test, reviewing the best protein bars on the market in 2024. “There are plenty of different protein bars on the market,” says Hobson, “and they differ greatly in terms of taste and texture. To narrow the field down – and to provide consistency of review – I only tested chocolate-flavored bars. I tested and judged the best protein bars on their taste, texture, and nutritional effectiveness. I also took other factors into account, including the cost and availability, but also the amount of polyols: a type of sweetener which can upset the gut in high amounts.”

What to look for when buying protein bars

Protein bar preference is very individual – especially when it comes down to taste and texture. However, when shopping for the best protein bars, it’s crucial to glance over their ingredient lists to check how much protein they pack. You should also be mindful of any additives, such as sugars, artificial flavors and fillers, which can limit the nutritional effectiveness – it’s all about balance. And of course, if you’re looking for the best vegan protein bars, be sure to check what protein source is included.

It’s also a good idea to set your budget and be aware of costs, as they can certainly stack up if you’re chomping on protein bars every day. Lots of brands now offer subscription services, which help you save money while also ensuring you never run out. And, there are other options for getting your daily protein fix, like the best protein cereals and the best protein powers – be sure to shop around!

Look beyond protein to the variety of other supplements you can use to promote muscle growth. Expert nutritionist Laura Jennings has plenty of alternatives.

If you’re looking to build muscle in a bid to get in shape, supplements are worth considering supplements as part of that process. The chances are you’ve used fitness supplements before, even though you might not have known it. From packing a protein shake in your gym bag to chugging the occasional isotonic sports drink, it’s likely you’ve supplemented your day-to-day nutrition while trying to stay in shape or recover from one workout to the next.

The trouble is that looking for the best supplements can get mighty confusing, especially as each manufacturer wants to convince you their products is better filtered, or more efficient, or will boost muscle growth the most. As you look around for the right product, you might feel as if you need a degree in chemistry to understand what you’d be putting into your body.

The science behind some of the best supplements for muscle growth may be slightly baffling, but we’ve done the hard work so you don’t have to. We’ve trawled through the latest developments in supplement science to dig out the important stuff: what you need, when you need it and why.

It’s possible you’ll find a supplement to send your training gains through the roof, or just learn a bit more about the products you’re already using. Either way, next time you put in the hard yards at the gym, you’ll know you’re getting the nutritional back-up you need.

This guide to the best supplements for muscle growth was compiled by expert nutritionist Laura Jennings. Find out more about how we test.

BCAA powder with scoop

1. BCAA

The benefits of BCAAs – otherwise known as branched-chain amino acids – are numerous. They’re the best supplement to take during workouts because they help to keep a steady supply of proteins flowing into your muscles.

If you’re looking for the best supplements for lean muscle growth, BCAAs are a great place to start. This helps with muscle building as it reduces the amount of muscle loss during exercise and improves protein synthesis, the process by which new muscle tissue is built.

BCAAs can also help to prevent muscle loss during periods of intermittent fasting.

NUTRITIONIST SAYS: “In my role as a registered nutritionist,” says Laura Jennings, “I support the utilization of BCAA supplements for their indispensable role in muscle protein synthesis. The combination of leucine, isoleucine and valine in BCAAs facilitates muscle recovery, alleviates exercise-induced muscle soreness, and helps maintain lean muscle mass. Particularly advantageous for those involved in rigorous workouts, BCAA supplements offer efficient muscle support.”

Try Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard BCAA

2. Creatine

Your body metabolises creatine into ATP, which is used for every initial muscle movement.

So it’s vital to have adequate supplies when you’re doing heavy, high-intensity workouts in order to deliver the required energy to your muscles.

In other words, you should consider taking creatine if you’re looking to lift harder for longer, as it’s one of the best supplements for significant muscle growth.

NUTRITIONIST SAYS: “By replenishing ATP stores,” says Jennings, “creatine fuels short bursts of intense energy, boosting performance during high-intensity activities like weight lifting and sprinting. This supplement’s ability to draw water into muscle cells may contribute to cell volumization, further supporting muscle growth. I find creatine supplements to be a reliable and well-researched option for those seeking improved strength, enhanced workout capacity and accelerated muscle recovery.”

Try Protein Works’ Creatine Extreme

3. Leucine

The most anabolic amino acid, leucine can independently stimulate insulin secretion and muscle protein synthesis, enhancing the muscle-building process.

At 11%, whey protein powders are very high in leucine content, which is one reason it’s so effective as a post-workout elixir.

NUTRITIONIST SAYS: “Leucine supplements play a pivotal role in the intricate process of muscle protein synthesis, aiding in the repair of muscle tissue post-exercise,” explains Jennings. “As a key trigger for this process, leucine is essential for bolstering muscle strength and overall performance, making it a valuable supplement for those engaged in strength training or aiming to preserve muscle mass.

“Research shows that pairing leucine supplements with complimentary nutrients, such as vitamin D, maximises performance benefits. Incorporating leucine supplements into a well-rounded diet proves especially advantageous, facilitating efficient muscle development and fostering a speedy recovery post-exercise.”

Try Applied Nutrition’s Leucine 4K

4. L-carnitine

If burning fat during a workout is your priority, first you need to mobilise it.

L-carnitine is an amino acid responsible for transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria, our cells’ energy powerhouses. This makes it one of the best supplements for lean muscle growth.

NUTRITIONIST SAYS: “L-carnitine supplements are celebrated for their integral role in energy metabolism, facilitating the conversion of fat into a usable energy source,” says Jennings. “That’s especially advantageous for highly active individuals and those focused on weight management. Integrating L-carnitine may effectively support increased energy levels and optimise fat and glycogen utilisation during physical activity. L-carnitine’s association with enhanced exercise performance, potential fatigue reduction, and improved recovery make it a noteworthy addition to any training plan.”

Try Solgar’s liquid L-carnitine

Foods rich in glutamine – one of the best supplements for muscle growth
Food rich in glutamine with structural chemical formula of glutamine molecule. Food for training and exercise: spinach, eggs, parsley, carrot, beans, almond, walnut. Bodybuilding, sport nutrition.

5. L-glutamine

This amino acid should be present in your body, but if you have problems with your digestion or are training hard, a supplement can help to strengthen the lining of your gut and help protein synthesis.

NUTRITIONIST SAYS: “I emphasize the crucial role of L-glutamine, the predominant amino acid in plasma and skeletal muscle, in post-workout recovery and overall exercise performance,” says Jennings. “After intense physical activity, glutamine levels decline, posing a risk to normal plasma levels and inviting protein breakdown. This decline is often associated with compromised immunity after prolonged exertion.

“L-glutamine supplements are instrumental in fortifying immune system health, defending against infections and preserving muscle mass post-exercise. Additionally, these supplements aid in mitigating gut damage, promoting overall gut health. Incorporating L-glutamine into your routine is advantageous for those seeking heightened physical resilience.”

Try the Reflex Nutrition’s L-glutamine

6. Magnesium

Every organ needs magnesium, especially the heart, muscles and kidneys. If you skimp on this vital mineral you can experience anxiety, sleep problems and irritability.

Magnesium also helps to maintain a normal heart rhythm and aids in the body’s energy production.

NUTRITIONIST SAYS: “Magnesium supplements offer myriad health benefits,” says Jennings. “As a vital mineral, magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions within the body, including energy production, muscle function and nerve transmission.

“Supplementing with magnesium can support cardiovascular health by helping regulate blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease. In my opinion, integrating magnesium supplements is a valuable strategy for overall health, addressing key aspects of energy metabolism, cardiovascular function and sleep quality.”

Try BetterYou’s Magnesium Spray

7. Multivitamins

Whether or not you should take multivitamins is always a difficult question. Although you shouldn’t rely on them to make up for a bad diet, a quality multivitamin can help to fill in the gaps in an otherwise solid eating plan.

Deficiencies in vitamins can cause mood swings, depression, lethargy and exhaustion, but taking a daily dose will keep you on the up and focused on your goals. There is also evidence a multi-vitamin can help you recover from a tough workout. So, if you’re looking for the best supplements for muscle growth, taking a good quality multivitamin is a great place to start.

NUTRITIONIST SAYS: “Multivitamins provide a convenient way to address potential nutrient gaps in one’s diet, offering a diverse range of essential vitamins and minerals,” says Jennings. “This supplementation is especially beneficial for individuals with busy lifestyles or dietary restrictions. A well-formulated multivitamin supports energy production, physiological functions, immune function and overall vitality.”

Try Centrum Performance’s Multivitamin Tablets

8. Fish oil

It’s important to include omega-3 fats in your diet for health reasons, and a supplement can help you to maintain a good ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 – most of us consume too much of the latter.

Studies have shown fish oil supplementation results in decreased body fat and reduced inflammation. It has also been linked with increased serotonin levels, more focus in training and less stress.

NUTRITIONIST SAYS: “Fish oil supplements, abundant in omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, provide diverse health benefits,” says Jennings. “These essential fatty acids foster heart health by lowering triglycerides and promoting optimal blood vessel function. The supplements’ anti-inflammatory properties also contribute to relieving joint pain and stress-induced inflammation.

“Moreover, incorporating fish oil enhances cognitive functions such as learning, memory and overall brain health. From a professional’s view, omega-3 supplements are not only well-tolerated but also present a secure and advantageous option for cognitive enhancement and inflammation management.”

Try Nature’s Bounty’s Fish Oil

9. Vitamin D

You should get your vitamin D from the sun, but that’s a forlorn hope for the average desk-bound Briton – 20 minutes’ exposure is enough in the summer, but according to the National Institute of Health it’s impossible to get enough come the winter.

Deficiency is common and linked to lower strength levels and increased body fat, so it’s important to top up your levels with supplements if you want to boost your muscle growth – and overall health. Low vitamin D levels have also been associated with a number of diseases, including diabetes and depression. So you can see why it’s important to consider taking the best vitamin D supplements.

NUTRITIONIST SAYS: “As a nutritionist, I often highlight the importance of Vitamin D, often referred to as the ‘sunshine vitamin’ for overall health,” says Jennings. “It plays a pivotal role in calcium absorption, promoting strong bones and teeth. Adequate vitamin D levels are linked to immune system support, reduced inflammation, and a lowered risk of chronic diseases.

“While sunlight exposure is a natural source, supplements become essential, especially in regions with limited sun exposure. Ensuring optimal vitamin D levels is paramount for maintaining overall wellbeing, making it a cornerstone supplement for individuals of all ages.”

Try the BetterYou DLux Vitamin D Oral Spray

10. Green tea

This is one of the best natural fat-burners around and can give your metabolism a jolt, making it one of the best supplements to augment your muscle growth journey.

Green tea is also packed with antioxidants and regular consumption has even been linked to reducing the risk of a range of conditions, including heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

NUTRITIONIST SAYS: “Green tea stands as a robust antioxidant source, abundant in catechins such as EGCG,” says Jennings. “These natural polyphenols harbour anti-inflammatory traits, bolstering cardiovascular wellbeing and potentially lowering the risk of specific cancers.

“The infusion’s moderate caffeine levels deliver a smooth energy lift without the jitters, heightening cognitive function. Additionally, green tea aids weight management by elevating metabolism and energy expenditure. The presence of L-theanine, a calming amino acid, promotes relaxation without inducing drowsiness, rendering green tea my ideal morning elixir for a gentle and refreshing start to the day.”

The best sweatpants overall

All the sweatpants here are hot on the heals of our favourite. The Under Armour Meridian Tapered Pants (buy now) have the best overall fit and feel, with that flattering tapered design and a super soft and stretchy fabric for reliable comfort whether you’re working out or chilling out. Impressive breathability boosts their workout appeal while zippered pockets enhance their overall versatility.

Other sweatpants recommendations

Best for comfortGiving the UA Tapered Pants a run for their money in the comfort stakes are the Gymshark Retake Knit Joggers (buy now). The cotton-polyester mix and subtle knitted patterns around the ankles, calves and knees make them a joy to wear.
Best for cold-weather workoutsFor outdoor winter workouts, you’ll want sweatpants with decent wind and water resistance, and the Under Armour Outrun The Storm Pants (buy now) deliver on both fronts. Ankle zips and no-bounce pockets are nice touches too.
Best for eco credentialsWe often assume apparel made from recycled material can be a bit of a compromise but these Lululemon License To Train Joggers (buy now) are serious performers, boasting abrasion and water resistance from their 100% recycled construction.

Top on the list of the best sweatpants for men are the Under Armour Meridian Tapered Pants (buy now). While I was testing, I found the close, tapered fit of the Meridian to be one of the most flattering of any of the sweatpants I’ve ever tried. Its cuffs aren’t elasticated but I didn’t mind this, as the leg tapers naturally toward the ankle. This, combined with the super-soft and stretchy fabric, meant for all-day comfort, which I loved.

During a workout, I also found that the material wicked sweat away from my body and dried quickly. Because of this, I’d say the Meridian is suitable for intense gym or track sessions. I also appreciated the two zipped pockets too, which are handy for stashing valuables while training.

2. Gymshark Retake Knit Joggers

Gymshark has got comfort levels spot-on here, with flat-knit, satin-soft fabric and a waistband that doesn’t create any unwanted pressure. They are also breathable and dry quickly.
Pros
 • Flat-knit fabric promotes all-day comfort
 • Textured knit around joints feels satin-soft
 • Lightweight and breathable
Cons
 • Crotch tends to sag
 • Cuffs are cinched, not elasticated
Materials53% cotton, 47% polyester

At first glance, I thought the Gymshark Retake Knit Joggers (buy now) looked like many other sweatpants. However, when I looked a little closer, I noticed the little details that make it stand out as one of the best pairs of sweatpants for men. These include the subtle anti-chafing knit patterns around the ankle, calf and knee, which soften the parts of the material that touched my legs the most as I moved.

Zipped pockets are a nice touch too, and although the Retake Knit is a little looser than I’d usually like, there’s no denying how comfortable these joggers feel – whether I’m in the gym or on the sofa.

 • Water- and wind-resistant
Cons
 • A bit warm for milder conditions
 • Not as comfortable for lounging
Materials87% polyester, 13% elastane

While training outdoors with these sweatpants, I was impressed by the excellent wind and water resistance, making them a winner for cold-weather workouts. I also found that the four-way stretch fabric gave me complete freedom to move and they were also incredibly breathable. The no-bounce pockets and ankle zips are also useful details, which came in handy when running. If you want to keep your al fresco sessions up when the mercury starts to drop, believe me, these aptly named sweats have got you covered.

4. Represent 247 Track Pant

Men’s Fitness verdict

There’s no getting away from the fact that the 247 Track Pant is expensive for a sweatpant. But it’s well made, has a good shape and plenty of flexibility for wearing inside the gym and beyond.
Pros
 • Excellent fit and stretch
 • Good breathability
 • Plenty of pockets
Cons
 • Expensive
 • Waistband could be wider

Before even trying them on, I was impressed by how lightweight these were in my hands. When I put them on, I loved the way the four-way stretch fabric glided over my skin. The fabric was also great at keeping moisture at bay while I exercised, helping me to feel fresh long after I nailed my last reps. Plus, these sweatpants feature deep pockets which will swallow your wallet, phone, keys and more too.

5. On Sweatpants

Men’s Fitness verdict

Soft, stretchy and super durable, these midweight sweatpants are ideal for light workouts or cool-down coverage. The deep and numerous pockets are also perfect for stashing valuables.
Pros
 • Super soft and stretchy
 • Plenty of pockets
Cons
 • A bit heavy for rigorous workouts
 • No zippered legs
Materials82% recycled polyester, 13% Lyocell, 5% elastane
FeaturesZippered side and back pockets;

On’s trademark is simple yet sophisticated style with subtle technical twists, so it’s no surprise these sweatpants have both style and substance. In my experience, there aren’t many sweats that can make the gym-casual crossover as effortlessly as these do. A combination of classic style and colours and impressive durability, storage and performance makes the On Sweatpants (buy now) a versatile choice.

I found the fit to be roomy but not over-baggy with classic tapered legs, cuffed above the ankle. That’s great for stopping the sweat rising up but sadly means you can’t whip them on without taking your training shoes off.

Durability also gets my thumbs-up. In my tests, that silky fabric stayed soft even after loads of trips through the wash.

6. Nathan 365 Joggers

Product shot of Nathan 365 jogger

Men’s Fitness verdict

For lounging around the house, you won’t find many better sweatpants or joggers. They are soft, stretchy and fast-drying, but, the material is quite thin so they’re not ideal for outdoor exercise.
Pros
 • ‘Ultra soft fabric’ is exactly that, and comfortable for lounging
 • Dry incredibly quickly
 • Good-sized pockets, plus a smaller zipped pocket
Cons
 • Material is stretchy but thin. Not suited to outdoor exercise
 • Tight-fitting crotch leaves little to the imagination
Materials88% polyester, 12% elastane
FeaturesTechnical knit; 4-way stretch waistband;
hand pockets; zipped coin pocket
SizesS – XXL

Reviewed by Isaac Williams

If you’re after some comfy sweats, these Nathan 365 Joggers (buy now) are as comfortable as they come. The brand describes the material as ‘ultra soft’, and they certainly live up to the billing. I’d go so far as saying they’re the comfiest joggers I’ve ever worn.

Wearing these around the house is a dream, but for anything much more active you should probably opt for thicker, more durable sweatpants, as I found the material on these to be quite thin. However, they do earn some practicality points for the deep side pockets and the added bonus of a smaller zipped pocket, which securely stored my valuables.

All in all, Nathan’s 365 Joggers are hard to beat if comfort is your number-one priority.

7. MP Rest Day Joggers

Product of MP Rest Day jogger

Men’s Fitness verdict

The term ‘joggers’ can be a bit of a misnomer and that’s the case with these sweats. They are supremely comfy and great for lounging but a bit too loose and heavy for anything too active.
Pros
 • Great cotton comfort
 • Good choice of colours
Cons
 • Pockets are shallow
 • Waistband doesn’t cinch very tightly
Materials66% cotton, 32% polyester, 2% viscose
FeaturesZip closure at hem; adjustable drawcord waistband;
welt pockets
Sizes2XS – 3XL
Colors7 colours available

Described as ‘slim fit joggers’ on the MP site, these are actually of the loose and comfortable variety. In fairness, the clue is in the ‘Rest Day’ name, and while you’re not going to want to go for a run in them, for lazy days at home you won’t find many better.

In terms of the materials , 66% cotton is a big plus – generally speaking, more cotton equals more comfort – and while I was testing these, it was the comfort that was the standout factor here. Also, I tested the ‘Smoke Blue’ pair, which made a nice change from the usual grey or black colourways.

I did have a couple of gripes with the MP Rest Day joggers (buy now) – and whether minor or more significant depends on your own needs. Firstly, I found that the drawcord waistband doesn’t actually draw that tight. The counterpoint is that there are eight sizes available, so it should be easy enough to find a fit that doesn’t need too much tightening. However, if there is a little bit of wiggle room around the waist, pulling that cord tight isn’t quite as easy as it should be.

Secondly, and more importantly, I found the side pockets to be extremely shallow – to the extent that an iPhone only just about fits in. It’s a problem part rectified by the addition of zips to keep everything secure, but a bit more depth would provide some more peace of mind.

8. Gymshark Sport Joggers

Men’s Fitness verdict

Superbly stretchy and lightweight, these sweats offer maximum flexibility and freedom of movement, making them ideal for a range of drills – from light recovery runs to intense workouts.
Pros
 • Light, flexible and comfortable
 • Good versatility for training
Cons
 • Legs can rise up
 • More sporty than casual style
Materials92% polyester, 8% elastane
FeaturesZipped pockets, drawcord to waist,
reflective details
SizesXS – 3XL
ColorsBlack, silhouette grey, navy, willow green, evening blue

Performance is at the heart of everything Gymshark does and its Sport Joggers (buy now) are no different. They’re tailor-made for dynamic or high intensity sessions. While testing, I found they offered plenty of give, stretch and breathability. Plus, their flattering, slimline fit felt super supportive, and the wide drawcord waistband kept my comfort at a premium.

I found them to be great for a wide range of drills, from jogging warm-ups to deep lunges and dynamic stretches. They’re also not too heavy for more intense sessions. I even managed some light recovery treadmill runs and am sure these will work a treat on cold winter runs, too.

9. Lululemon License to Train Jogger

Product shot of Lululemon jogger

Men’s Fitness verdict

Made from a shell-like, abrasion-resistant, four-way stretch fabric, these water-repellent and fast-drying sweats are perfect for outdoor workouts and warm-ups.
Pros
 • Water repellent
 • Plenty of pockets
Cons
 • Not as comfortable for lounging
 • Can be a bit toasty

FeaturesReversible waistband; zippered pocket with
hidden phone and coin sleeve

However hard you train, you can depend on Lululemon’s abrasion-resistant and water-repellant joggers. These four-way stretch sweatpants are made from 100% recycled material too, enhancing their environmental credentials. There are also three zippered pockets, covering all your storage needs.

I found the classic tapered fit of the Lululemon License To Train Joggers (buy now) to be a little baggier than some skinnier sweatpants. That said, the cuffed ankles are narrow and quite seriously elasticated, which I found great for locking the legs nicely in place – although it does mean you can’t slip them on without taking your shoes off.

What to look for when buying sweatpants for men

When shopping for sweatpants, your perfect pair will largely depend on the type of training – or lounging – you’re planning on doing. For example, if you’re up for a sweaty session, finding sweatpants with sweat-wicking fabric and added breathability is a must. If you’re going for a run, you might want to look for sweatpants with zip-up pockets to hold your valuables.

Not sure which option is right for you? Check out our guide on the difference between sweatpants and joggers, which includes more handy buying advice.

It might sound silly, but the route to finding the best sweatpants for your gym session will depend on how much sweat your activity is likely to produce. A high-intensity, cardio-based class would benefit from a different style of sweatpants to a rest-filled visit to the weights room. Plus, wearing the wrong style could make a hot and hard workout even tougher.

Choosing the right fabric

For those sweatier sessions, you’re best looking for a pair of sweatpants that have a sweat-wicking fabric. You should also look for added breathability, and a bit of stretch. Most sweatpants in this category will be made of a synthetic material like polyester, but if you want to keep things natural, Merino wool is a good (if more premium-priced) alternative.

The humble jogger is fine for anything else (and can even double up for sofa-based Netflix binging sessions too), and most modern designs tend to come in a cotton and synthetic (nylon, polyester) blend.

Finding the right fit

The best cut and design of a pair of sweatpants fall on the same dividing lines as fabric choice. While not for everyone because of their skin-hugging nature, a tapered, tight-fitting pair of sweatpants is beneficial for sweaty gym sessions. This is because they are able to wick sweat away at the source rather than letting it pool on the skin. Plus, they won’t get in the way when running on a treadmill or in the saddle on a spin bike.

When your lower half isn’t being used for exercise or sweat isn’t an issue, then something baggier and free-flowing can often be more comfortable to work out in.

Additional features

Finally, it’s worth considering additional features when looking for the best sweatpants for the gym. A zip-up pocket is always handy for storing valuables like your phone and keys, while it’s worth opting for a drawstring closure over an elasticated waist if you want to truly be able to tailor the fit.

How we test the best sweatpants

Our team of reviewers are experienced testers of all manner of fitness kit. While testing out these sweatpants we were mainly looking at fit, comfort and style. We also paid close attention to the fabrics used and whether they offered specific sporty features like 360-degree stretch or moisture-wicking abilities, alongside any additional features, like pockets, drawstring waists and elasticated cuffs.

Suitable for yoga and pilates or HIIT and plyometrics – for use at home, in the gym or on the go – these are the best exercise mats for 2024, tried and tested by us.

If you’re looking to kit our your home gym, good-quality exercise mats are often the best – and least expensive – place to start. Unless you want to risk discomfort or injury, you can’t really carry out prone stretching exercises or dynamic plyometric exercises on a hard gym or home floor.

The best way to perfect your pilates or hammer out your HIIT sessions in comfort and safety is with an exercise mat. Despite their relative simplicity, though, not all mats are made equal. They vary in dimensions, cushioning and thickness, as well as material, grip, weight and portability, so it’s important to find one that suits your needs.

We tested out a wide range of options to find the very best exercise mats on the market.

Why you can trust Men’s Fitness

Every product you read about on mensfitness.co.uk has been the subject of at least four weeks of rigorous testing. Our reviewers are made up of the central Men’s Fitness team and a collection of expert consumer journalists and product testers. Find out more about how we test

These are the best exercise mats

It’s tough to single one exercise mat out, but in our opinion the Body Power Never Quit Fitness Mat edges out the rest. For starters it’s the cheapest on test but it’s also one of the comfiest, thanks to that 10mm slab of luxurious foam-like nitrile butadiene rubber. It’s also double-sided with a handy carry strap.

Other exercise mat recommendations

Best for taller usersThe Lululemon (Big) Mat wins hands down here. It’s a whopping 30cm longer than most other mats and is built to last. It’s reversible between smooth and grippy surfaces and features an antimicrobial coating too.
Best for gripThe Myprotein Yoga Recovery Mat has a soft and spongy 6mm foam construction that provides just the right amount of cushioning. The wavy grooves in the material give your hands and feet extra purchase and make sure the mat stays put too.
Best for extra widthThe Karma Fitness Extra Wide Workout Mat does exactly what it says on the tin. At 31.5in / 80cm it’s the widest mat we tested, and it’s plush, comfy and easy to clean and carry too.

The Body Power Never Quit mat impressed us with its combination of plushness, low weight and great value. It eliminates all traces of hard floors and absorbs impacts well.
Pros
 • Thick and plush
 • Easily portable
 • Excellent value
Cons
 • Takes a while to unfurl after being rolled up
 • Softness can feel unstable
MaterialsNitrile butadiene rubber
Dimensions71.7 x 24in (182 x 61cm)
Features10mm cushion; double-sided; carry strap
ColorBlack

The Body Power Never Quit Fitness Mat is the cheapest exercise mat we tested but you wouldn’t know it. While testing, we found the generous 10mm-thick nitrile butadiene rubber construction gave a luxurious, comfortable and foam-like feel.

Its non-slip textured surface provided us with plenty of grip, and that 10mm cushion felt plush underfoot. It’s also great for absorbing impact during more dynamic workouts. We also like the fact it has a carry strap and is double-sided, making it even more versatile.

Overall, we think the Body Power Never Quit Fitness Mat holds its own in the company of the best exercise mats over five times its price.

2. The Lululemon (Big) Mat

Partially unrolled Lululemon the (Big) Mat

Men’s Fitness verdict

We’re not sure why the (Big) is in brackets: there’s no hiding from this fact this is a BIG mat. It may be pricey but it’s super-sturdy, reversible and the ideal mat for 6ft-plus users.
Pros
 • Longest on test
 • Reversible
 • Sustainably made
Cons
 • Expensive
 • Not suitable for those with latex or rubber allergies
MaterialsFSC-certified natural rubber
Dimensions83.9 x 27.9in (213 x 71cm)
FeaturesReversible; antimicrobial additive
ColorsSix multi-coloured designs

The Lululemon (Big) Mat may seem pricey but its FSC-certified rubber construction has such a quality, long-lasting feel, we reckon could easily be your mat for life. Its top layer absorbs moisture and an antimicrobial layer keeps mould, mildew and bad smells at bay.

It’s worth noting that this is substantially bigger than any other mat we tested, around 10cm wider and a whopping 30cm longer than regular mats, making it ideal for taller users. It’s reversible too, so you can swap between smooth and grippy surfaces depending on your workout. The Lululemon is available in six eye-catching marble designs, too.

3. Karma Fitness Extra Wide Workout Mat

A partially rolled up yellow exercise mat

Men’s Fitness verdict

There’s plenty of space on this mat for all kinds of prone yoga poses, stretches or floor exercises. Its waterproof TPE construction means it’s a good choice for outdoors use too.
Pros
 • Plenty of mat real estate
 • Very comfortable
 • Easy to clean
Cons
 • Relatively expensive
 • Not the smallest to store or carry
MaterialsDual-layer waterproof TPE
Dimensions72 x 31.5in / 183 x 80cm
Features0.4in / 10mm thick; carry strap
ColorsYellow, red, blue, grey, dark grey, black

If you often find yourself teetering on the edge of your workout mat, give the Karma Fitness Extra Wide a try. While its length is fairly standard, the width is whopping – at 31.5in / 80cm it’s the widest mat we tested.

We found it to be plush and comfortable too, and easy to clean and carry thanks to the included strap and optional mat cleaner.

4. Myprotein Yoga Recovery Mat

A partially rolled up Myprotein Yoga Recovery Mat

Men’s Fitness verdict

Don’t be fooled by the price – the Myprotein Yoga Recovery Mat offers comfort, stability and grip in a lightweight package.
Pros
 • Great price
 • Grooved for grip
Cons
 • Feels a bit cheap
 • Marks easily
MaterialsHigh-density foam
Dimensions72 x 24in (183 x 61cm)
Features6mm cushion; textured surface; strap included
ColorsBlue, grey

The Myprotein Yoga Recovery Mat is a lightweight, inexpensive mat that’s an ideal option for stashing in your gym bag. It comes with a handy strap and we were able to roll it up nice and compactly after use, despite it having a soft and spongy high-density 6mm foam cushion.

In our opinion, it’s just the right thickness to provide a strong, stable base for your feet, despite its soft and cushioned feel. We also found the wavy grooves provided plenty of grip. Although this is one of the cheaper options on our list of the best exercise mats, it stands up to plenty of wear and tear for a foam mat.

5. Kimjaly Yoga Mat

The Decathlon Kimjaly Yoga Mat

Men’s Fitness verdict

The Kimjaly mat gets our vote primarily due to the sheer number of size, thickness and colour options available. Alignment lines are helpful for yoga work too.
Pros
 • Non-slip and moisture-wicking
 • Size options for a bespoke fit
Cons
 • Expensive for Decathlon
 • Looks and feels a little cheap
MaterialsFoamed natural rubber / polyurethane
Dimensions72.8 x 25.6in (185 x 65cm)
FeaturesAvailable in 3mm, 4mm, 5mm and 8mm thickness; alignment lines
ColorsVarious

The Kimjaly Mat is available in a wide array of versions (Light, Comfort, Grip+, XL), all with different thicknesses ranging from 3mm to 8mm. While testing, we thought the 5mm Grip+ version felt soft and well-cushioned. We also love that it provides a plush platform to protect spines from hard floors without compromising on grip.

The smooth elastomer top layer works well to wick away moisture – our hands and feet were locked firmly in place while on the mat. At 820g it’s lightweight and compact when rolled up. There’s a carry strap, too, making this suitable for taking to the office for after-work gym sessions.

6. Gymshark Studio Mat

Gymshark Studio Mat

Men’s Fitness verdict

Gymshark’s mat is grippy and reassuringly well cushioned, but it’s one of the bulkiest on test. So is probably more use in a permanent gym set-up than as a portable mat.
Pros
 • Striking design
 • Good size and feel
Cons
 • No carry strap
 • Marks easily
Materials100% natural rubber
Dimensions70.8 x 25.9in (180 x 66cm)
FeaturesFull-length screen-printed logo; strap and band bought separately
ColorsBlack, brown, hibiscus pink

The Gymshark Studio Mat is a quality piece of kit. Made from 100% natural rubber, we found it to be soft underfoot with a reassuringly grippy surface. It’s hefty too, so we didn’t have any issues with it budging on the floor. However, that does make transporting it a bit of an effort.

There are three colour options, each with the striking Gymshark logo emblazoned across the front. Plus, if you do want to take it out and about, there’s an optional strap and band, which you can also use for banded exercises. Overall, a robust exercise mat that should last you for years.

How we tested the best exercise mats

Our testers put these exercise mats through their paces in a range of workouts, from HIIT sessions to yoga, to bring you the best of the best. In particular, testers were looking to see how grippy the mats were, how comfortable they were to exercise on and how easy they were to transport on the go. Bonus points were also awarded for durability, design options and value for money.

What to look for in the best exercise mats

Grip

A good grip between your hands, feet or other contact points and the mat surface is key to performing exercises with confidence, and therefore with proper form. The last thing you need when performing the best hip stretches is a knee or groin strain caused by slipping off the mat. Look for options with a non-slip or textured surface that let you plant your limbs with confidence.

Stability

Stability is another important factor to consider. After all, a mat that moves beneath you is as likely to annoy, distract or even injure you as one with little grip on the top layer. Heavier rubber or cork mats tend to lie flat more easily without curling at the corners like lighter foam ones, for example. Look out for mats that tend to bunch up in the middle, too – you want to avoid trip hazards mid-burpee if possible.

Comfort

There’s usually a tradeoff between comfort and portability. This is because thicker, heavier mats are harder to roll up and carry. But don’t ignore the comfort factor, particularly if you plan to work out on hard surfaces. There should be enough cushioning to do crunches without crippling your spine, but not too much that you lose your balance holding one-legged yoga poses. The average mat tends to be about 4-8mm thick, though there are some exceptions here.

Durability

How long your exercise mat lasts will depend greatly on the material it’s made from and its thickness. Rubber mats, or those made from other natural fibres such as jute, will most likely last longer than foam ones. You’ll be more likely to take a lighter foam mat out to evening classes too. This will add to its wear and tear. Durability is worth bearing in mind especially if you plan to wear shoes on it, or to use weights or medicine balls.

Portability

Another thing to consider is portability. The mats in this list range from 500g to well over 3kg so some are easier to lug around than others. Not all mats come with straps or a carry handle either (though sometimes a bag or strap is an optional extra). It depends on what’s important to you – if you want to do regular classes after work, you’ll want a smaller, lighter and probably less durable mat than one set up permanently in your home gym.

The post These are the best resistance bands we’ve tested appeared first on Men's Fitness.

From simple rubber bands to complex full-body systems with handles, these are the best resistance bands to kickstart your strength training and home workouts.

Resistance bands have become a staple in many homes and gyms. They’re portable and lightweight, don’t take up too much space, and – if you know what to do with them – can help you get an excellent resistance workout without spending big bucks on kit.

There’s a surprisingly wide array of resistance bands available too. You can get cheap and cheerful traditional options like the Amazon Basics TPE Resistance Band set. Or there are pricey powerhouse systems like TRX’s RIP Trainer or the Gorilla Bow Travel. Whatever your need there’s probably a resistance band that can scratch your particular itch.

There are two main categories of bands: simple resistance bands and resistance band systems. Simple bands are usually thin sheets of stretchy material, typically made of latex, silicone, synthetic rubber or TPE, though bands can be made of fabric – a popular material for thigh and bum-focused bands. These require a bit of imagination if you want a full body workout, with light or mini bands great for getting the blood pumping, and heavier options supplementing dumbbells and bars. They can also be used as pull-up assists.

Versatility relates to how many exercises and workouts the band is suited to. Some bands, like the Eono Fabric, are only suited to specific strength training, i.e. quad exercises, so its versatility rating is lower. On the other hand, the Myprotein 11-piece Band Set includes a number of bands suitable for both compound movements and more targeted accessory work.

Band quality is all about the quality of materials used, and how durable the bands are. Cheap, plastic bands are unlikely to last long, whereas high-quality rubber is built to last.

Resistance range refers to the level of resistance on offer. Bands like the Amazon Basics are all fairly light, whereas with the Mirafit Band Set you have the option to go impressively heavy.

Eono Fabric Resistance Bands

2. Eono Fabric Resistance Bands

Men’s Fitness verdict

The Eono fabric resistance bands are comfortable to use and are great for passively adding some extra resistance to squats and glute bridges.
Pros
 • Super-comfortable to use
 • Excellent for thighs and backside
Cons
 • Limited uses
 • Fabric is less hygienic
Resistance15lb to 50lb (6.8-22.7kg)
MaterialsPolyester, latex
ColorsPink, cyan, blue
Number of bands3
FeaturesCarry pouch

The Eono Fabric Resistance Bands are great for passively adding some extra resistance to squats and glute bridges. They serve up versatility with three strengths, and they also offer decent value, working out to roughly £5 each.

As well as being soft and comfortable, they’re also more taught than traditional bands – a standard characteristic of fabric alternatives. This extra tension is good for working out your glutes.

Each band is a 15-inch loop, with the light band being pink, medium being cyan, and heavy being blue. Eono has even sewn in internal grip strips inside the workout bands which help keep them steady and prevent any slipping or rolling during workouts.

Amazon Basics TPE Resistance Band Set Review

3. Amazon Basics TPE Resistance Band Set

Men’s Fitness verdict

The Amazon Basics TPE resistance band set is a great no-frills option for those looking for light resistance workouts or injury rehabilitation.
Pros
 • Affordable and portable
 • Drawstring carry case incuded
Cons
 • Slightly sticky out of the box – may require talc
 • Too light for serious muscle building
MaterialLatex-free TPE
ColorsPink, green, orange
Number of bands3

The Amazon Basics TPE resistance band set is a no-frills stretching aid for light resistance workouts, injury rehabilitation and increasing blood flow to an area. The set gives you three long, versatile bands for under £10 – pink is heavy resistance, green is medium and orange light.

Amazon doesn’t offer corresponding weight ratings for each band. But, they’re all on the lighter side when compared to the other bands on test.

These aren’t looped either, so will rely on you to grip them in order to create tension, but I found that actually makes them a bit more versatile for certain two-handed exercises like lat raises, which wouldn’t be possible with a looped band.

Myprotein Resistance Bands 2 piece set

4. Myprotein Resistance Bands

Men’s Fitness verdict

Myprotein’s pair of bands are the ideal tool to get out for leg day. They’re nothing fancy but are great value and tough enough for low rep ranges.
Pros
 • Affordable, tough bands
 • Great for lower-body work
Cons
 • No instructions or guides
 • Too short for most upper body training
Resistance50.7lb to 119lb (23kg to 54kg) each
ColorDark grey
Number of bands2

The Myprotein two-band set is an excellent shout, especially for anyone who wants to amp up their lower-body training. Taught and tough, I found the bands to be great pull-up aids, and they can help you lock into larger muscle groups like glutes and lower back.

There’s nothing fancy about the Myprotein Resistance Bands beyond the fact they’re great quality. Unlike the MyProtein 11-Piece Band Set, these two tough cookies won’t be too light for low rep ranges. In fact, if you’re looking for bands to exercise your arms or upper body, these will probably be too high-resistance.

5. Gorilla Bow Travel

Men’s Fitness verdict

This powerhouse band system provides a challenging full-body workout. You can use multiple bands to layer resistance, however loading heavier bands can be tricky.
Pros
 • Powerful full-body system
 • Supports multiple bands simultaneously
Cons
 • Priciest band system on test
 • Too large and cumbersome for some
ResistanceUp to 350lb (158.8kg)
ColorsBlack with coloured bands
Number of bands9 or 11
Features3-piece bow; simultaneous band use; carry case

If, like me, you’re someone who likes the idea of investing in a system that covers full-body fitness, the Gorilla Bow Travel should float your boat. With two different sets available offering 9 or 11 bands and up to 330lb (149.7kg) or 350lb (158.8kg) or resistance respectively, you can get a highly effective workout in.

You can load the bow with up to four bands, so that means four resistance strengths when you use one band at a time. You can also use multiple bands simultaneously to layer resistance. In testing, that meant it was easy to quickly drop the weight when you fatigue – perfect for drop sets.

Roughly 55in (140cm) tall when assembled, the Gorilla Bow is the most commanding of all our fitness band systems and the bulkiest. In its travel version, though, it detaches into three elements that help it fit easily in a large bag or small suitcase.

6. Gymproluxe Band Bar Set

Men’s Fitness verdict

Version 2.0 has been updated to give you everything you need for upper body training in one set. It’s a good value kit and intuitive to use, but lower body training options are limited.
Pros
 • Excellent for chest and upper body
 • Quick and easy to adjust
Cons
 • Limited lower body benefit
 • Additional kit required for full-body training
ResistanceFrom 44 – 200lb / 20 – 90kg
MaterialLatex
ColorBlack with black, green and white bands
Number of bands6 (2 x 22lb / 10kg, 2 x 33lb / 15kg, 2 x 44lb / 20kg)

The Gymproluxe Band Bar Set used to come in five flavours, each giving you three resistance bands. Gymproluxe 2.0 now gives you everything you need in one set. It’s still an impressive range of resistance, but it takes all the guesswork out of which version to get. In the box you get 2 x 22lb / 10kg white bands, 2 x 33lb / 15kg green bands and 2 x 44lb / 20kg black bands. You also get the detachable steel bar, padded exercise belt and carry bag.

Load up all the bands and you have 200lb / 90kg of resistance in one convenient, lightweight belt. Or you could load up just the white bands and have 20kg of resistance. Or you can go anywhere in between. We found it simple to release individual bands to drop the weight in increments too. Presses, rows, curls and flyers are all easy to perform whether standing up or lying down, so we found we could smash out a decent workout pretty much anywhere.

The bar lets you do some of the best chest training we’ve experienced from a band system.

Product shot of TRX RIP Trainer

7. TRX RIP Trainer

Men’s Fitness verdict

You’ll want extra bands to give your exercises variability, but this is a stellar piece of kit for sculpting defined abs. Just check your ceiling height before you get started…
Pros
 • Excellent core training kit
 • Ships with a workout guide
Cons
 • Only the medium resistance band included
 • Requires ample space to train
Resistance20lb (9kg) – 15lb (7kg), 25lb (11kg), 38lb (17kg) and 50lb (23kg) are optional extras
ColorsBlack and yellow
FeaturesDoor anchor; carabiner; six-year guarantee

The TRX RIP Trainer is not just a pole with a band on the end; it’s a core annihilator in disguise.

Excellent for turning traditional moves into asymmetric exercises, I enjoyed the fact the TRX focuses the resistance on one side of your body, forcing you to compensate, and in turn develop muscles you’d usually lock into with pilates or other core-focused training.

The TRX RIP Trainer is covered by a six-year warranty and comes with a medium chord, which packs 20lb (9kg) of resistance. Four other cords are available: light (15lb / 7kg); heavy (25lb / 11kg); the extra-heavy (38lb / 17kg); and XX-heavy (50lb / 23kg), costing between £24.95-£49.95 / $24.95-$49.95.

I also appreciated the included door anchor and carabiner, which give you options to use it indoors and out – although the system requires a few clear square meters beyond as well as relatively high ceilings.

8. Myprotein 11-Piece Band Set

Men’s Fitness verdict

Another great-value set, Myprotein’s bands come complete with leg straps, handles and door anchor. It’s a versatile piece of kit ideal for high rep-range conditioning.
Pros
 • Excellent value
 • Enables loads of exercises
Cons
 • Too light for low rep ranges
 • No instructions or quick-start guide
Resistance10lb (4.5kg), 20lb (9.1kg), 30lb (13.6kg), 40lb (18.1kg), 50lb (22.7kg)
ColorBlack
Number of bands5
FeaturesLeg straps; door anchor

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better set of bands for beginners than the MyProtein 11-Piece Band Set. The system is big on bands and value, shipping with five tube bands, two handles, two leg straps and a door anchor, tucked away in a breathable net bag.

The five bands are all different colours and range from 10lb (4.5kg) to 50lb (22.7kg) in resistance. Each end of each band features a carabiner (clamp), which can latch onto either a handle, a leg strap or the door anchor. I used the leg strap around my ankle, and found it ideal for abductor, adductor and glute exercises. With the handles on both sides, you’ve got shoulder and chest presses covered.

The MyProtein 11-Piece Band Set isn’t as high resistance as much of the competition, but for constant tension and high rep range conditioning, I found the five bands – which can be doubled up for extra resistance – work a treat.

9. TRX Bandit Resistance Band Kit

Men’s Fitness verdict

If you’re starting out using resistance bands, we can’t think of an easier way than with the TRX Bandit. It’s not one for putting on serious mass but it still provides a decent workout.
Pros
 • Portable and lightweight
 • Comfortable to use
Cons
 • Won’t be for heavy strength training
 • More expensive than four individual bands
Resistance5lb (2.3kg) to 60lb (27.2kg)
ColorsBlack and yellow
Number of bands5
FeaturesSix-year guarantee; compatible with other TRX bands

The TRX Bandit Resistance Band Kit is incredibly simple, but it’s also very effective and user-friendly, consisting of two light bands and two medium bands, as well as two handles.

Up to two bands can slide into each handle at a time, creating an easy-to-grip resistance band system with up to four resistance strengths. Tension ranges from 5lb (2.3kg, one light band) to 60lbs (27.2kg, two medium bands), and I found the Bandit handles work with heavier TRX bands, which can be bought separately from £14.95 / $14.95.

While it won’t be for anyone looking to put on serious mass, I think the Bandit can still help most people get a tough, muscle-building workout in higher rep ranges.

How we test the best resistance bands

These bands were tested by experienced product reviewer and fitness expert Basil Kronfli. Basil tested the bands over a six-week period from his home, across a variety of exercises and home workouts. He rated the bands according to three main criteria: versatility, band quality and resistance range. From these scores he gave them an overall rating.

What makes a good resistance band?

Rather than asking what makes a good resistance band, you should be asking what makes a good resistance band for you.

Most bands on the market serve a purpose, with lightweight options being great for stretches and basic resistance training, and more heavyweight bands being better for muscle building. Standard bands are generally more portable, while systems take up more space.

From a safety point of view, a good band is one that won’t snap. You should always check that your band doesn’t have any micro tears in it before you start working out. Imagine being flicked with the biggest elastic band by the most brutish bully in school – if a resistance band snaps mid-workout, it won’t be pretty.

By their nature, bands also have variable resistance. Often their resistance is measured by two corresponding weights – 5-10lb (2.3-4.5kg), for example. The first weight measurement – 5lb – is the band at 50% tension. The second weight – 10lb – is the band at 100% tension. Bands usually hit 100% when stretched to double their starting length.

If you have shorter limbs and want maximum tension, you shouldn’t opt for really long bands as it may be tough to hit that 100% resistance. Likewise, tall people shouldn’t opt for bands that are too short, as they might hit full tension too soon, preventing them from being able to get a full range of motion when training.

Once you decide what you need from your band – one that is travel-friendly, easy to use, comes with training videos etc – then you can pinpoint what makes a good band for your training needs.
