The Salomon S\/Lab looks like more of an all-rounder, ideally suited to longer trails or more mixed terrain training sessions. A UK 10 feels like UK 9.5,\u00a0so I would say\u00a0size\u00a0up half a size to avoid them being too tight. However,\u00a0I often take a 9.5, and these shoes were\u00a0immediately comfortable\u00a0for me. I\u00a0wore\u00a0them\u00a0indoors for\u00a0three\u00a0hours\u00a0and found them\u00a0not too weighty compared to most trail shoes\u00a0(they are\u00a09.5oz \/ 269g).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found the\u00a08mm\u00a0stack still offered a natural roll of the foot without affecting\u00a0lateral stability\u00a0and I hardly noticed\u00a0the 4.5mm lugs when walking.\u00a0The upper looked good; I liked the\u00a0quick lace system and the\u00a0generously sized toe box.\u00a0Overall they looked and felt like they&#8217;d offer good breathability, grip and protection.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-trail-test-how-the-salomon-s-lab-genesis-performs\">Trail test: how the Salomon S\/Lab Genesis performs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I was\u00a0excited to test\u00a0these shoes out, with some important cross-country races coming up. On my first test, I tried them out on\u00a0both\u00a0an\u00a0easy and\u00a0a\u00a0slightly technical local trail\u00a0including\u00a0tarmac\u00a0sections. The low weight and 8mm heel drop gave them a light, nimble feel, and\u00a0the midsole energy foam compound felt responsive.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, I&#8217;d say that the\u00a0underfoot protection felt a little questionable on hard embedded rocks,\u00a0and the\u00a0grip\u00a0from the 4.5mm lugs was\u00a0slightly compromised in thick mud. For me,\u00a0these shoes are not the best for\u00a0an\u00a0extreme\u00a0course\u00a0or rocky\u00a0trail, but they did perform well\u00a0going up and down hills,\u00a0when either heel striking or landing on the forefoot.\u00a0I had no issues\u00a0at all running in these shoes on\u00a0tarmac. My longest run in them was part of my marathon training, where I ran seven miles, mostly on roads, to an off-road 5K parkrun, and then ran seven miles home again. I found the Genesis perfectly comfortable for this.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d say these are a good all-day pair of shoes to wear for training, on longer distances and on smoother trail surfaces.\u00a0If you&#8217;re looking for a lightweight trail shoe that will help propel you forward on race day and offer further performance advantage, I\u2019d recommend the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com?id=119874X1638715&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.saucony.com%2FUK%2Fen_GB%2Fendorphin-edge%2F%3Fcid%3DPPC-SAUC-UK--saucony%2520endorphin%2520edge_e%26gclid%3Dc237a322a20c17e764dec53d116d4816%26gclsrc%3D3p.ds%26msclkid%3Dc237a322a20c17e764dec53d116d4816%26utm_source%3Dbing%26utm_medium%3Dcpc%26utm_campaign%3DSaucony_MSFT_PPC_Product%2520Names%2520-%2520Tech%2520-%2520Endorphin_ROAS_SEA_ALLM_UK_EN_ALL_ECOM_IMPORT%26utm_term%3Dsaucony%2520endorphin%2520edge%26utm_content%3DEndorphin%2520Edge&amp;xcust=Men's%20Fitness&amp;sref=%20mensfitness.co.uk%2Freview%2Fsalomon-slab-genesis%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saucony Endorphin Edge<\/a>\u00a0(that\u2019s my go-to pair), which comes with foam cushioning and a Carbitex carbon-fibre plate. Or if you&#8217;re racing on a course likely to be quite muddy look no further than the impressive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mensfitness.co.uk\/review\/inov-8-mudtalon-speed-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inov-8 Mudtalon Speed<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-second-opinion-ian-sutherland\"><strong>A second opinion: Ian Sutherland<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On taking the shoes out of the box they felt lightweight, and looked to have good amounts of protection. I found them to be very comfortable, offering a smooth, stable, well cushioned ride and I particularly liked the\u00a0quick lace system, a great feature that enables a good level of locked-down fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On my first run the shoes gave a good level of grip and traction in most conditions, although the grip lessened when I encountered steep, muddy downhill sections of trail. This shoe definitely feels like it&#8217;s designed to excel on drier, rocky terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The longest run I did in these shoes was ten miles and they proved to be comfortable from the outset. However, I&#8217;d probably not wear the shoe for any distances above a trail half marathon, as I&#8217;d prefer a little more cushioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On my longer runs, that poorer grip on muddy sections of trail didn\u2019t give me the confidence I would have needed to pick up my speed. For wet autumn or winter runs I&#8217;d probably look instead to shoes like the <a href=\"https:\/\/mensfitness.co.uk\/review\/asics-fuji-speed-2-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Asics Fujispeed 2<\/a> or the inov-8 Mudtalons for really poor conditions. If you&#8217;re looking for more of an year-round trail shoe, I&#8217;d recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com?id=119874X1638715&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.salomon.com%2Fen-gb%2Fshop-emea%2Fproduct%2Fthundercross-li4411.html%23color%3D80119&amp;xcust=Men's%20Fitness&amp;sref=%20mensfitness.co.uk%2Freview%2Fsalomon-slab-genesis%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Salomon Thundercross<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com?id=119874X1638715&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.saucony.com%2FUK%2Fen_GB%2Fxodus-ultra-2%2F54205M.html%3Fdwvar_54205M_color%3DS20843-30%26icid%3Dsearch_suggested_products&amp;xcust=Men's%20Fitness&amp;sref=%20mensfitness.co.uk%2Freview%2Fsalomon-slab-genesis%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saucony Exodus 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/balancedtreatment.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stephen McGlynn<\/a><\/strong> is an experienced osteopath, medical acupuncturist and sports massage\u00a0therapist.
